CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA The Villages Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - March 2010 Message From President The clubs near future looks smooth. Leilani Devries has accepted the Social Chairperson s position for the period from July 1 st 2010 through December 31 st of 2011. She will be counting on volunteers to help her, and hopefully will have enough volunteers so that no one has to do it every month. This will give the snow birds a chance to help. I hope you will join me in welcoming Leilani to this position and will willingly accept the opportunity to help out. This is not gender specific, so anyone, guys and gals, can help. I hope you are all enjoying the multiple golf outings Bob, Margie, Jack Parker, Dick Gaskill and Barbara Richards have and continue to arrange. The bi-weekly Nine & Dine events continue to be a success and should continue at Eagle Ridge in Del Web s Spruce Creek s campus until we can return to Hacienda around May. We have re-scheduled the Executive events in March to avoid conflict with Nine & Dine schedule, since so many members wanted to do both. Membership continues strong with 13 new members as of 2/17/10 increasing our membership to 146. Carol Sexton continues to approach her position as Membership Chairperson with enthusiasm. She plans to help new members quickly become active and identify existing members that stay on the fringe to encourage them to become more active. We are still looking for someone to spearhead the monthly bowling get together. If you would be willing to collect names of members that would like to participate, and make arrangements at one of the bowling centers, many members will appreciate your efforts. We are looking for a volunteer to take the position of Communications Chairperson on January 1 st 2011, when Pat Songer wishes to retire after several years in the position. This position requires moderate Word (word processing software) experience, since all communications to the National Headquarters, for the newsletter and the local newspapers and Recreation News are in Word. If you have experience with other word processing software, I m sure you would pick up Word very quickly. In addition to sending the above commu- nications, the Communications Chairperson would attend the Board Meetings every other month as a Board member responsible for running the club. This position has no gender preference and it is only required that you be member for 6 months as of January 1 st, 2011. It is a very quick way to become involved in the club. If you would like to assist your club by volunteering for this position, please let me or any Board Member know. ~Larry Arps General Membership Meeting - Tuesday, February 9, 2010 Larry Arps, President, called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM. Minutes and Treasurer s report were approved and stand as submitted. Membership Carol Sexton introduced guests. Carol stated that we have 11 new members, 0 transfers and 1 non-renewal. Membership as of 2/9/10 is 143 members. By the end of February, 6 current members need to renew. Carol encouraged members to Upcoming Events Include: Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst - Thursday, May 27 Sunday, May 30, 2010 - Details at www.singlesgolf.com/ Pinehurst We're Going to Scotland - August, 2010 - Details at SinglesGolf.com/scotland National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hours: 9:00am to 2:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE Regular Meeting Date: Second Tuesday of the Month Next Meeting: March 9th, 2010 Meeting Location: Chula Vista Rec Center Our Website: www.thevillagesfl.singlesgolf.com (See next page for list of officers and board members.) The cards also show Carol s and Larry s phone numbers if they have any questions. Other Business: Reply to Bob Miotke for events for July, Aug, and Sept. For our next month s meeting, Phylis Gramke has e-mailed Jim Beckett Golf College thru Spruce Creek to be our speaker. We will have Subway provide the food. 50/50 Drawing was held and prizes distributed. Previous to the meeting, members enjoy pizza and salad. Respectfully Submitted, ~Barbara Bonney, Secretary Annual Audit s Findings: January 28, 2010 To Whom It May Concern: In accordance with the by-laws of the Villages Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association, I was requested to perform an independent audit of the financial records of the Villages Chapter. This request was made by the President, Larry Arps, and the standing board of the Chapter. On January 28, 2010, I met with the Chapter s Treasurer, Myra Crosby to conduct the review of the financial transactions for the last 6 months of 2008 which had not been reviewed in the previous audit and the financial records for 2009. The basis for the review was a random sample of selected months from 2008 and 2009. The review of 2008 consisted of a review of the financial transactions for the months of September and November, 2008. The review of 2009 transactions included the financial transactions for the months of April, June, October and December, 2009. The review consisted of a review of bank statements, deposit slips, check payments and the supporting documents for the listed months above. Based on this review, I found the financial transactions examined were accurate and disclosed no irregularities. Gregory E, Genco Larry Arps /s/ Myra Crosby _/s/ Happy Hour Happy Hour was enjoyed by the group on the patio at Mallory, the priority golfers joining after their 18 hole event. Drinks and food provided some warmth but the cold air and lack of sunshine eventually dismissed the group to warmer surroundings, home or inside the restaurant. We are looking for warmth to hold this event outside but may have to stay inside for another month or so anyways it was good to sit in some sunshine for awhile. ~Happy Hour Coordinator, Barbara Bonney Meet & Greet Membership Activities Eleven new members and eight guests were introduced at our February meeting. And since then, our newest members are Sue Sullivan and Debbie Testement. Both of them have been participating in many of our outings so, if you see them give them a big welcome. Remember, many new members are gained through the contact with our current members. I hope you all are carrying a few of our cards to give to friends and acquaintances. Invite them to a meeting or just have them call the phone numbers on the card. We will answer their questions and encourage their participation. In the meantime, stay warm. See you on the golf course. ~Carol Ann Sexton, Membership Chairperson Upcoming Golf Events It appears Mother Nature is still mad at us. The combination of cold weather and/or rainy weather has limited the options for people getting onto the courses. I would hope she begins to take mercy on us and allow us to get out with more frequency. Anyone who has a direct line to her might just put in a good word for us!!! 2010 DOUBLES TEAM SCRAMBLE January s lousy weather didn t keep our couples double scramble people off the links entirely. Even though, the weather did seem to have an impact on scores. The winners were the teams of Ruth Gibson, Wally Mitchell (who had a substitute Dick Jervis), and a familiar name of Judi Andrews, and James Arnold finished their outing with even par. Congratulations guys and gals. Should you have any questions on this function please contact Bob Miotke at rmiotke04@ comcast.net. We will soon be asking if anyone wants to sign up for the May thru Sep period so keep an eye out if you wish to become a participant. NINE AND DINE We will start at 1:00PM as a shotgun start at Eagle Ridge then meet in the restaurant for fun and fellowship following the outing. Cost for the 9 holes will be $24.00 plus tax through the March events, which are March 10 and 24. If you are interested in playing contact Molly at msielatycki@yahoo.com. Hope everyone has an opportunity to join us for these fun outings. We will see prices reduced in April to $20 plus tax. The dates for the April outings are the 7 th and 21 st. Beginning in May we will start once again at Hacienda Hills with tee times beginning around 3:30 and dinner following in the restaurant, along with dancing. We are working on prices and will publish these as soon as they are available. These outings will be each Tuesday, except club meeting dates, and run through early October. CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS Our February 13 event at Continental was a blast! A cool and wintery blast! Of our 32 sign-ups we had 22 start and only 8 who completed 18 holes. Winner of the closest to the pin, and 2 free rounds of golf at Continental, was Sue Sullivan. Congratulations, Sue. She was busy winning the prize while many of us were enjoying warmth and fellowship in the restaurant/bar. What a way to beat the elements!!

Here are our upcoming events through July so you can mark your calendars and hopefully participate with us: March 13 We will visit Sarabande Golf Club for the first time with starting tee times at 9:30AM and a cost of $35.00 per person. March 27 We will be back at Stonecrest Country Club with a shotgun start at 8:30AM and a cost of $37.00 per person. May 8 We will be returning to the Country Club of Mt Dora with starting time being 12:30 and the cost being $29.00 per player. May 22 We will return to the Cane Garden Country Club with regular Village rates that apply with starting times over three courses starting approximately 1:30PM. June 12 We will be visiting the Nancy Lopez Country Club here in the Villages for the first time. Regular Village rates will apply with starting times over three courses starting approximately 1:30PM. June 26 Our next new site will be Havana Country Club here in the Villages. This also is our first outing at this club. Regular Village rates will apply with starting times over three courses starting approximately 1:30PM. Hope this helps with organizing your calendars early enough to allow you to participate. You can reserve your slot for any of the above events by emailing me at rmiotke04@comcast.net or sending your check made out to ASGA to Bob Miotke, 1439 Crestwood Lane, The Villages, FL 32162. Please do not combine events on checks as this makes it very difficult to keep things straight. Thanks for your cooperation. EXECUTIVE COURSE OUTINGS Margie Margo and Jack Parker are splitting the scheduling so that we can try to get 4 outings per month. But keep in mind that trying to get tee times is very difficult with short daylight hours and tons of snowbirds down for the next few months. I am certain Margie and Jack will get as many of you as possible out to play and enjoy the golfing. Dates for the next Three months are: Tuesday, March 2 Will be handled by Margie Margo Tuesday, March 9 Will be handled by Jack Parker Tuesday, March 16 Will be handled by Margie Margo Tuesday, March 23 Will be handled by Jack Parker Tuesday, April 6 Will be handled by Margie Margo Tuesday, April 13 Will be handled by Jack Parker Tuesday, April 20 Will be handled by Margie Margo Tuesday, April 27 Will be handled by Jack Parker Margie Margo can be reached at dmmargo@embarqmail.com and Jack Parker can be reached at jacpar4105@aol.com. Also, please give us your feedback on whether the additional outings being scheduled are too few, too many, or just right. We are trying to meet your needs and your input is very much appreciated. PRIORITY GOLF This group of golfers is Villages Priority Golf Members and they play 18 holes on championship courses here in the Villages in the early afternoon on Thursday s. The group is looking for those who would be willing to step in at the last minute as sub, contact Dick or Barb (listed below) as you will be held in a sub list in the event someone is unable to play or another person is needed. For more information contact either Barb Richardson at babsonfive@comcast.net or Dick Gaskill at joggerknot36@yahoo.com. Come on out and enjoy this newly formed group. It seems one of our club members, who shall remain nameless, was out and playing golf with a caddy and this exchange was overheard: Golfer: Please stop checking your watch all the time. It s too much of a distraction! Caddy: It s not a watch! It s a compass!!!!!!!! Hope everyone has the opportunity to participate in one of our outings in the month ahead and hit them long and straight. ~Bob Miotke, Golf Committee Chair Social & Upcoming Meeting March 9th, 2010 Our regular monthly meeting was held Tuesday, February 9 at Chula Vista Recreation Center. Dinner was provided by Snappy Pizza with assorted pizzas and salad on the menu. After dinner and a brief meeting Bingo was the name of the game. Larry's match play opponent conceded a putt and said, "Larry, that's a gimme, it's good." Larry, not being one to simply say thank you, went ahead and putted out. Of course he missed. Does Larry's missed putt count? A. Yes, Larry's missed putt is counted. When Larry proceeded with his putt, the gimme was nullified and Larry's putt counted. B. No, Larry's missed putt is not counted. Once the putt was conceded, the hole had ended for Larry. AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is B. Larry's missed putt is not counted. Once the putt was conceded, the hole had ended for Larry. Rule 2-4 applies. The rule says that a match play player may concede his opponent's next stroke at any time, as long as his opponent's ball is not moving. At that point, the opponent is considered to have holed out.

CELEBRATING 17YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MARCH, 2010 Event Dates: Thursday, May 27 Sunday, May 30, 2010 With great excitement and anticipation, we re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our Reunion in Pinehurst again. The Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largest-attended event each year with attendance soaring over 400 in years past. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 27-30. Prices have been lowered $23 on the standard package price and $140 on the room by myself package price, as compared to 2008 pricing. As such, we anticipate a quick sell-out. Pinehurst was the site of our Memorial Day weekend reunion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Packages start at $489 per person, based on double occupancy and $639 per person based on single occupancy. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday on No. 3) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst The standard package is a great deal. If you priced this on your own, you d easily pay twice as much as what you get as an ASGA member. You can t fine a value like this at any great golf resort in the country. Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. To join ASGA, simply go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Included in the Standard Package: 4 days / 3 nights, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners and welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (heavy hors d oeurves and 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 18), picnic-style cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sit-down dinner and 3 lavish buffet breakfasts in the main dining room Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (does he dance?) All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site transportation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 20% discount on spa services or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon. Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. U. S. Open Returns to Pinehurst in 2014 For the first time in Open history, one venue is the site of both the men s U. S. Open Championship and the women s U. S. Open Championship in the same year. Both championships will be hosted by Pinehurst in 2014. Pinehurst was also the site of the 1951 Ryder Cup as well as the 1999 and 2005 U. S. Opens. We re proud to see the American Singles Golf Association host their event at Pinehurst again this year, said Sara Green, sales manager at Pinehurst. The showing ASGA had in years past is a testament to the match we have with our resort and your members. Pinehurst has a tradition that goes way back into the last century. All of the greats have played there. The No. 2 course will not be part of our standard package, but hopefully, you ll have an opportunity to play it at a reduced rate due to the anticipated aerification schedule. See website for details. Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
