Volume 2017/02 Friendship set to Music December 2017 THE COMMITTEE: Elaine Davis - President Geoff Linck-Parker - Vice Pres. Yvonne Brittingham - Secretary Ted Newton - Treasurer Gail Newton - Editor Margaret Webber - Providore Debbie Webber - Co-Providore Maureen Miller - Clogging Rep CALLERS: Glenn Wilson Elaine Davis - Senior Caller - Co-Caller Welcome from your new committee and the last newsletter for 2017. It has been a while since the last edition and I hope to continue in Julie s footsteps and bring you an entertaining read every quarter. I would love to receive any contributions that you believe are fit for a newsletter (gail.ravx@gmail.com). Your new editor, Gail Message from the President Our Party nights this year were a lot of fun and well attended by dancers and visitors from Lighthouse Squares, Northside Promenaders and Logan City SDC, dressing up for our Disney, Country & Western, Halloween and Melbourne Cup themes. Margie and Deb Webber supplied some delicious real cream birthday cakes for our dancers each month and we now have a couple of wooden square dancers to decorate these beautiful cakes. The decorations were made and donated by Anita McDicken of Elimbah. The dancing format next year will change slightly, as follows 7pm - 7:30pm Beginners 7:30pm - 9:30pm alternate Basics & Mainstream 9:30pm Supper It s been a quiet year with some of our older members drifting away and not many new dancers coming through. We look forward to a bigger and better future. The new format will encourage all our dancers to stay for the evening and enjoy all the benefits of Square Dancing. Please check our notice board each week for upcoming dances and events in the larger Square Dance community. The more you dance the more you learn and the more enjoyable it will become. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year, and a big Thank You to our committee for all their efforts throughout 2017. Elaine Davis, President, EZ Squares

Things are changing at our club next year. Our Caller Glenn Wilson will be leaving us at the end of 2017 to further his calling career. Glenn started dancing at EZ Squares in 1993 and began teaching the Basics to our beginners in 1995. Glenn took over as Club Caller when Brian Horsey left to call at Bribie Island Squares. We are very grateful to Glenn for his 22 years of calling at EZ Squares. Please come along to our Christmas Party on 5 th December to farewell Glenn and thank him for all those years of dedicated service. EZ Squares co-caller, Elaine Davis, will be taking over as Club Caller next year. Farewell from Glenn Hi Folks, Well it s been a quarter century since I became a member of this club, 23 years of that as the club caller. There have been a lot of good times and laughs along the way. While I m moving on, I will always have good memories of EZ Squares and its members. Most of my achievements as a caller have been because of this club. I have developed from Trainee caller, through Club caller, to State Caller, mostly as a consequence of calling for EZ Squares. As I am a Life member, I will be back from time to time, particularly for major club events & party nights. If Elaine needs to be away for things like National Conventions, I ll be available to stand in. I see this as a good opportunity for myself, for Elaine and the Club. I m able to improve my Plus calling skills at my new club. Elaine gets the opportunity to have complete nights and teaching beginner s classes. The club has the opportunity, in conjunction with Elaine to maybe change the way things have been done in the past. I know Elaine has plenty of new ideas, looking from a new perspective. Thank you to the current committee for all their hard work, I ve enjoyed working with you, as I have with all the committee members over the years. Yes, there have been disagreements, but only insofar as each thought their ideas would be better for the Club. In the end, everybody went away friends. There is no doubt that the Club is in need of rejuvenation, numbers have never been lower. I sincerely hope that the current Committee, with Elaine, can turn that around and EZ Squares once again, becomes the biggest club in Qld. It s not goodbye, just farewell. Yours Sincerely, Glenn Wilson

Note from the Treasurer I don t usually write a regular column in our Newsletter but I would like to explain certain decisions that the Committee took this year, namely, the increase in the door entry fee to $8.00 from 1 st September and the decision to ask members to pay for the Christmas function. Our Club relies on yearly membership fees and weekly dance entry fees to provide the money to run the club. We also get a small amount from the raffles. On the cost side, we have to pay annual insurances, incorporation costs and Society fees. Every week we pay the hall rent and caller fees. We also subsidise the supper expenses which are kept low by the generosity of members who bring eats for the supper table each week, and also through the efforts of our providore, Margie, who has done a fantastic job keeping supper costs down. In the past, we have enjoyed a modest increase in our bank account so that we could keep entry fees down and subsidise social events. However, this year the number of dancers every week is dwindling. We need at least 17 dancers each week to cover the cost of the evening. For over half of the last year we have lost money. The result is a slow erosion of our bank balance. As your Treasurer, it is my duty to ensure that our Club remains solvent and is able to pay its bills on time. Any other discretionary spending is subject to availability of funds. We need to maintain enough cash in the bank so that we can ride out lean times like those we are currently experiencing. I wish all of you a happy and safe Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you all back dancing in 2018. It is numbers through the door that will keep our Club going so please encourage your friends and family to give Square Dancing a go. Last but not least, I sincerely thank our Caller of 25 years, Glenn Wilson, for his tireless efforts. He taught us the subtle disciplines of Square Dancing and did it well. I wish him well in his new venture, and look forward to welcoming him back on occasions as a guest caller. Ted Newton, Treasurer DON'T FORGET: "A SMILE ON YOUR FACE HELPS YOUR FEET WORK BETTER Please Remember! Square Dancing is done - all by hand gestures a lot of these are hand touching. Remember to use the HAND SANITISER to stop the spread of germs. Our club is happy to provide this, please use to keep those bad germs away.

Kitchen News At the end of the evening - all join in the kitchen for some yummy supper; the committee extends their appreciation to everyone who brings something along to share. If it wasn t for you kind people, it would just be a cuppa! Birthdays are celebrated on the 4 th Tuesday of every month Debbie and Margie organize through the Bakery named below, for the Mouthwatering Birthday or Celebration Cake. Here s a supper idea in keeping with the festive season without being too rich. Lumberjack Cake Ingredients 2 large apples, peeled, cored and cut into cubes 1 cup dates, chopped 1 cup water, boiling 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 125g butter, softened 1 cup caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg 1 cup plain flour 1/2 cup self-raising flour Topping 60g butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup milk 1 cup shredded coconut Method Pre-heat oven to 180C (170C fan-forced). Grease and line a 23cm cake tin. Combine apples, dates and bicarb soda in a medium bowl. Add water and leave for 10 minutes. Beat 125g butter, caster sugar, vanilla, and egg, until light and fluffy. Slowly add apple and date mixture (do not drain the water from the mixture). Slowly fold in both plain and selfraising flour. Pour into prepared cake tin and bake for 45-50 minutes. Cake should spring back when ready, or when a skewer is inserted the skewer should come out clean. Combine 60g butter, brown sugar and milk in saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add coconut and stir for a further 1-2 minutes. Remove cake from oven and evenly spoon coconut topping over cake. Return to the oven for a further 20 minutes, or until coconut is brown. Stand cake for 5 minutes before turning onto a wire rack or plate. Happy Birthday to Glenn, Arthur and Val who were born in November. If you don t tell us the Month your Birthday is! We may not have a cake to celebrate with.
