Issue 1 January 2018 Welcome to the 1st edition of The Sports Source - WYSC s monthly newsletter. Over the last 12 months, our parents, players, and staff have worked together to create a memorable year. Together, we have achieved record participation levels and sporting excellence. I know you will enjoy reading all about our players and the success of our club - on and off the field. Raul Heras Director of WYSC WYSC has been very busy the last several months! Record participation for fall soccer programs, girls middle school volleyball, fall lacrosse clinics and at the fall basketball open fun nights! We are thrilled that With this new transport, WYSC can transport kids to Athey Complex and take them on other fun field trips throughout the summer! Look forward to summer camps this year! so many are participating in our programs. We ll send out a newsletter once a month to keep you informed of all events and make sure you don t miss out on all the fun clinics, sports, clubs and events! We began offering indoor sports conditioning this month for kids who want to up their game in the off-season. WYSC LACROSSE January 27 Throw-Around at Athey Field We can't wait for spring to play lacrosse! All registered players are welcome to join us at Fauquier Health Field at the Athey Complex on February 24th for our first on-field clinic of the season. All parents interested in coaching are encouraged to attend. You'll learn coaching techniques and drills for practice. Girls practice from 10:15am - 11:45am and boys practice is from 12pm - 1:30pm. Weather permiting, we'll practice the same time and place on March 3rd as well. On March 11th, join us for our kick-off event that includes uniform pick-up and scrimmages. A great way to start the season off with your teammates! You will also have the chance to meet WYSC staff and coaches for your teams. February 24 Spring pre-season clinic at Athey Field March 3 Team evaluations and scrimmages March 11 Kick-Off Event at Athey Field (WYSC Gym-rain) March 12 Practices begin We thoroughly enjoyed hosting so many amazing players at our lacrosse clinics this past fall. Players ages 3-16 came out and learned lacrosse techniques and enhanced current skills. We look forward to growing and expanding our clinics this fall. We'll make sure we are constantly helping players increase their skill levels. Thank you for helping to grow the newest sport at WYSC. We look forward to a great spring season! April 21/22 Picture Day (Athey or WYSC Gym-rain) Preparing for high school try-outs? Want to make sure your game is at its peak come the start of spring season? We now offer private and semi-private lessons with local coaches an players at the WYSC gym or Athey fields. Offering all levels for both boys and girls. Players are matched with a coach that offers the level of play needed to accelerate skill growth. Call 540.935.6903 or email glacrosse@wysc.org today to schedule a time that works around your schedule. Join us Saturday, January 27th for a free lacrosse throw-around at Athey Field. WYSC VOLLEYBALL Participation at the WYSC Winter 2017 Volleyball Tournament reached a record high. Held again at Auburn Middle School on December 19th, over forty participants played. We saw a lot of great players and coaches preparing their skills for the upcoming spring season of middle school volleyball. Congratulations to the first place champs - The Graham Crackers! WYSC is currently accepting coaching applications to fill ten positions for middle school volleyball. Looking for head JV and Varsity coaches for the 2018 season. Interviews will be conducted later this month. JULIE HICKLEY Julie is not your average grandma! Julie has been a WYSC coach for seven years, coaching her three grandchildren who have participated in WYSC sports since 2010. She has coached three basketball teams and soccer and we are honored to have such a great mentor for our players! JULIA BUERGARI Since Julia wasn t busy enough as a mother of two young boys, she offered to supervise pick-up U8 games this year. WYSC is thankful for the initiative and the U8 kids are happy to have Julia every Tuesday evening. Julia has been with WYSC since 2014 and has coached both basketball and soccer. Thank you, Julia! Once again WYSC has partnered with the Fauquier County Public Schools to bring volleyball to the girls in Fauquier this spring. Look for more information from your middle school soon - free registration for tryouts opens online February 15th. WYSC is looking forward to hosting our outdoor volleyball sessions this summer. Like last year, we will have boys, girls, and adult leagues. There will be two, four-week sessions held at the Athey Complex volleyball courts. Registration will open in April so get ready now! WWW.WYSC.ORG All schools will have a JV and Varsity team. Each team will have twelve players. Prior to try-outs, held mid-march, every participant will need a physical as well as knee pads for use during tryout. WYSC BASKETBALL Once again children came out in droves to participate in our 2017 Winter Basketball program. To end the season, WYSC held their championship round on March 11th at Taylor. Pictured left is Coach Scott Smal's team who took 1st place after beating out all other division teams. JANUARY 27 PICTURE DAY FEBRUARY 24 TH LAST WEEKEND OF GAMES MARCH 3RD PLAYOFFS We look forward to our 2018 Winter Championships being held on March 10th. Good luck to all teams and remember play on!! MARCH 10TH DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS Our 2018 winter basketball season is in full swing. This year we have 81 teams made up of boys and girls ages 4 to 17. We have over a hundred volunteer coaches and assistants helping shape the lives of these young athletes. We are also looking forward to hosting 3v3 basketball tournaments for youth ages 10-18. Mark your calendars! WYSC will begin looking for select players to play competitive basketball this spring with games beginning in April and ending in May. The competitive teams are for 5th through 11th grade boys and girls. There will be try-outs as well as coaches recommendations from the winter session. We will begin hiring coaches for the competitive teams in March. This year, WYSC has been thrilled to host open gym time. Look for open gym times when school is closed to burn off energy! WYSC SOCCER PAGE 5 OF 6 WYSC has introduced Futsal (indoor soccer) to their members this year. Futsal is FIFA's official indoor game. Sessions are one hour in length and consist of 20 minutes of technical training, followed by a game. Sessions began on January 4th and run through the end of February. Adults are playing too and we look forward to sharing great stories regarding the experience and skill Registration for Spring 2018 coaches both head and assistants has opened. This game only format will be supervised by a volunteer soccer coach, Julia Buergari to ensure safety. Julia looks forward to welcoming parent volunteers to help. Starting March 19th, Looking to keep your child busy over spring break? Why not try WYCS s soccer camp? We will be holding a half-day soccer camp March 26 th March 30 th. Competitive coaches needed for soccer and basketball. All are welcome to apply online. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. We are looking to fill positions by mid-march. Recreational lacrosse and soccer are looking for coaching volunteers. You don't have to have experience playing to coach, but have a desire to see our players have fun, learn sportsmanship, and work as a team. We love to see new coaches pair up with existing seasoned coaches and work together to ensure WYSC's coaching excellence continue for years to come. Every team needs one or two team parents to help organize snacks, drinks, time, a score keeper, etc. during games. Don't be afraid to step up and help make your kids season amazing! APRIL 2018 Warrenton Spring Festival Stop by the WYSC booth for prizes, surprises and fun! SUMMER 2018 Kids Camps Full-day summer camps including sports, crafts and field trips will be offered throughout the summer. Early/late drop offs will be available. Look for information coming soon! DECEMBER 2018 Warrenton Christmas Parade Looking for volunteers from all sports to help create our Float Committee now. Christmas is only 47 weekends away! With help from the PATH Foundation WYSC is expanding their indoor sport offerings to include Ping Pong (Table Tennis)!! A huge thank you goes out to the PATH Foundation for the continued support. WYSC will be offering Parent and Pal Play Nights with multiple new ping pong tables set-up to allow play for all ages. If you have an event or are looking to hold a birthday party indoors, the WYSC Gym is available for rentals. Reserve the gym which has plenty of room for meetings and entertaining. $150 for 90 minutes. Contact WYSC for more information. Rules will be reviewed briefly and then let the games begin. We look forward to this new addition and foresee lots of fun hours passed in the warmth of the WYSC will once again be offering weekly summer camps. We are currently looking to hire a camp organizer to arrange field trips, activities, and daily camp plans. Perfect position for someone looking to work park-time around their schedule.
