Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award (Formerly ASTA) Completion-$195 Attend only-$110 The Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award (SNZ STA) is a great opportunity for swim teachers to develop skills and understanding in aquatic education. Attend only then complete- $110 then $110 SNZ STA is a nationally recognised training programme developed to train people for teaching swimming and personal survival. On completion of the SNZ STA course requirements, participants also receive the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education) (43 Level 3 credits) SNZ STA covers how people learn, teaching and learning styles and effective communication SNZ STA outlines health and safety requirements in and around the aquatic environment. SNZ STA explains the progressions of learn to swim SNZ STA provides the tools to assist in the planning and delivering an effective swimming lesson SNZ STA covers processes and protocols for working in aquatic facilities Please note that you must be minimum 16 years of age to complete the Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award To complete the award participants are required to: Attend a one day course participating in theory and practical learn sessions in the class room and pool Complete a written work book Gain 20 hours of experience swim teaching Write 10 lessons plans with evaluations Be assessed by a Swimming New Zealand Accredited Evidence Gatherer.
ASSISTANT SWIM TEACHER AWARD The ASTA is for the person who wants to develop their skills and understandings of teaching learn to swim through the Ministry of Education Gateway programme. The one day course includes a theory and practical session. The theory session covers: ASTA encourages inclusion of swimmers with disabilities It covers how people learn, teaching and learning styles and effective communication Participants will be given information on the importance of feedback and how to use it effectively. The basic principles of child development and brain theory will be related to learn to swim. Common learn to swim progressions will be discussed along with recognition of aquatic readiness. ASTA provides the tools to assist in the planning of an effective swimming programme including ideas for class management, activities and use of equipment. ASTA outlines the principles of risk management in and around the aquatic environment. Trainee teachers will be introduced to a swim and survive programme including personal survival techniques, safe rescues and the use of life jackets. The practical session covers Health and safety risk management Water Safety and survival activities Activities to develop water confidence Progressive learn to swim drills and skills Class management activities Post course requirements include: 20 hours practical teaching experience Completion of lesson log Assessment by SNZ Evidence gatherer The ASTA covers one part of the New Zealand National Certificate in Recreation and Sport (Aquatics) Swim Education. On completion of the ASTA course requirements the participants gain 20 level three credits towards the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education).

Anyone who holds the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education) can register for the TSWD course. To complete the award you must hold your first aid certificate and be working or volunteering at a swim school or club that run classes which include swimmers with disabilities and has staff able to support you and give feedback to you during your training. Early Childhood Swim Teacher Award The ECSTA is for the swim teacher who wants to develop their skills teaching Baby and Pre-school classes. Anyone who holds the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education) can register for the ECSTA course. To complete the award you must hold your first aid certificate and be working or volunteering at a swim school or club that run classes which include parent and child and pre-schoolers and that has staff able to support you and give feedback to you during your training. The course and resources have been developed in consultation with Gill Connell who is recognised world-wide as a leading educational consultant in child development, movement, word study and perceptual motor development (PMP). School Age and Adults Swim Teacher Award The SAA is for the swim teacher who wants to develop their skills teaching school age and adult swimmers. Anyone who holds the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education) can register for the SAA course. To complete the award you must hold your first aid certificate and be working or volunteering at a swim school or club that run classes which include school age and adult swimmers and that has staff able to support you and give feedback to you during your training. New Zealand Diploma in Swim Teaching The Diploma qualification is recommended by Swimming New Zealand as the highest qualification for all professional teachers of swimming in New Zealand. Any person teaching swimming may complete the diploma. E.g. swim school directors, swim school employees, swim club coaches, school teachers, etc. upon completion of the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Aquatics (Swim Education), the three NZCST awards and all the requirements listed below. Aim: 1. To give experienced teachers of swimming an identifiable national qualification. 2. To improve the standard of swimming teaching and water safety in New Zealand. 3. To give those involved in teaching swimming an opportunity for further education. 4. To encourage teachers of swimming to share knowledge with their peers. To start your Diploma in Swim Teaching, you must: Hold all New Zealand Certificate in Swim Teaching modules Hold a current First Aid certificate Have completed 500 logged teaching hours. Hours must be logged on the approved Swimming New Zealand Form The 500 logged hours can only be started once the last NZCST module has been awarded. Submit a proposed research topic for approval. Recommended age of 18 years minimum Cost to complete $350 inc GST. The Diploma qualification by itself will not improve your swim teaching ability. This you must do for yourself through additional study, practice and experience. The qualification will have served its purpose if it contributes to your improvement as a swimming teacher and the improvement of teachers who work with you.
