game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Sunday, June 25, 2017 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA new orleans baby cakes (27-47) vs. colorado springs sky sox (42-30) RHP William Cuevas (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Taylor Jungmann (3-0, 1.27) THE BABY CAKES The Baby Cakes conclude a four-game homestand today against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The Cakes have dropped four of seven meetings this year, including a split of a four-games series at Security Service Field from May 23-26. New Orleans is 14-24 vs. Colorado Springs over the last two-plus seasons. YESTERDAY S NEWS Kyle Wren s leadoff home run in the first inning provided the game s only run as the Sky Sox defeated the Baby Cakes, 1-0. Cakes starter Tom Koehler permitted only two hits, and retired 12 batters in a row after a one-out single by Ivan DeJesus, Jr. in the second inning, but gave up a home run to lead off the game for the second time in as many starts with New Orleans. Koehler walked one and struck out seven but was outdueled by Forrest Snow and three Sky Sox relievers, who combined on a five-hitter. Four of the hits came from Moises Sierra, who singled in each of his at-bats, but the Baby Cakes bounced into three double plays and stranded the tying run at third base in the eighth inning. Rob Scahill worked around Sierra s two-out single in the ninth to record the save. Hunter Cervenka, Javy Guerra and Brandon Cunniff did not give up a hit over the final 2.2 innings out of the Cakes bullpen. ON THE HILL William Cuevas gets the nod in the series finale, his second start since signing a minor league pact with the Marlins on June 5. Cuevas made one relief appearance with the Detroit Tigers on April 14 and was 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA in nine starts with AAA Toledo when he elected free agency upon being designated for assignment. He worked 3.2 innings of one-hit ball on Monday in Nashville with five strikeouts and four walks. On This Date... SI SI SIERRA Moises Sierra has hit safely in 15 of 22 games in June, compiling a team-leading.355 average (27x76) for the month, 12th-best in the PCL. He is tied with Destin Hood for the club lead with 41 RBI, 15 of which have come in June. Last night was his first four-hit game since July 31, 2014 at Detroit when he was with the Chicago White Sox, the fifth four-hit effort by a Baby Cake this season, and gave Sierra a team-best 22 multi-hit games. SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS The Baby Cakes have clinched a 19th consecutive non-winning series to open the year, the longest drought without a series win to begin a season in franchise history. The 2004 club went seven series - losing four and splitting three - to open the campaign. The Cakes have dropped their last four series finales. TOMAS THE TRAIN Dating to May 23, Tomas Telis has a hit in 16 of his last 20 games with NOLA, batting.408 (29x71) with six doubles, one triple and eight RBI. Prior to going 0x4 last night, Telis had hit safely in each of his seven contests since returning from the Marlins, going 10x25 (.400), and Cakes pitchers own a 2.94 ERA (11 ER/33.2 IP) with Telis behind the plate in that span. 2007: Philip Humber allows three hits in 7.0 scoreless innings, and Andy Tracy homers and drives in two as New Orleans beats Memphis 4-1. Humber strikes out three while walking none to win his league-leading eighth game. IN LOMBO Steve Lombardozzi has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, during which he is hitting.386 (22x57) with four doubles, two triples, a home run and four RBI. His.485 on-base percentage in that stretch would lead the PCL in that stretch if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. Lombardozzi charted his 18th multi-hit effort, tied for thirdmost on the team, and is 10x19 (.526) in six June contests surrounding a stint on the disabled list. GREMLINS The Cakes are 6-13 in day games, including losses in 10 of the last 13. The team is batting.241 (161x668) under the sun, while the pitching staff owns a 5.76 ERA (109 ER/170.1 IP). WHAT A RELIEF Brian Ellington is limiting PCL opponents to a.144 batting average (5x44) in 11 appearances. Ellington has not allowed a hit in eight of those outings, including each of the last four, during which he has six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. MORE RELIEF Drew Steckenrider has been unscored upon in 19 of his 22 outings with New Orleans, and 11 of his last 12. In those last dozen appearances, Steckenrider has four saves with 23 strikeouts against two walks in 15.0 innings, during which opponents are hitting.104 (5x48). In two games since returning from Miami, he has struck out each of the six batters he has faced. JUENGEL BELLS Matt Juengel has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 starts, batting.345 (19x55). Juengel hit.353 during a nine-game hit streak from May 9-18, tied with Chad Hinshaw for the longest by a Baby Cake this season, with four doubles, one triple, one home run and five RBI. Juengel owns a.351/.417/.554 slash line in 20 games on the road, compared to.189/.211/.324 at home. HORSESHOES & HAND GRENADES NOLA is 4-13 in one-run games, tied with Nashville for the worst mark in the league, after pacing the circuit with a 25-15 record last year. New Orleans is also a PCLworst 15-30 in games decided by three runs or fewer. SUPER CAL Cal Towey has reached base safely in 15 of his 16 starts with the Cakes. He owns a.444 on-base percentage in since joining New Orleans on June 6, trailing only Moises Sierra (.470) for the team lead in that span. SIXTH SENSE New Orleans fell to 0-36 when trailing after six innings, making the Baby Cakes the only winless PCL clubs. NOLA was 7-54 in such scenarios last year. GOOSE EGGS The Baby Cakes lost a 1-0 decision for the second time this season (May 16 vs. Salt Lake). New Orleans has been involved in three shutouts in its last six games and 10 on the year (6-4), fourth-most in the league. THE BALLOT BOX In the latest update of the Triple-A All-Star fan voting released Thursday, a pair of Baby Cakes teammates are in line for All-Star nods. Drew Steckenrider is on top among relief pitchers, while Scott Copeland is in second place for starting pitchers. Matt Juengel ranks second in the voting at first base, as does Steve Lombardozzi at second base, while Moises Sierra is third at DH and Brandon Barnes sits in fifth place among outfielders. NAWLINS NOTES Tom Koehler added seven strikeouts to his NOLA career total of 294, second-most in franchise history (Elih Villanueva, 323)... The Baby Cakes have not homered in the last five games, and their 17 for the month are tied with Tacoma for second-fewest in the PCL (Iowa, 14)...
