game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Friday, July 21, 2017 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The Baby Cakes return to the Shrine on Airline to tonight to open a four-game set against the Nashville Sounds. NOLA has lost six of nine meetings this season, all at First Tennessee Par. These are the Baby Cakes only four games out of the first 20 coming out of the All- Star break to be played at home. YESTERDAY S NEWS Brett Hayes and Travis Snider homered to back five shutout innings from Clayton Blackburn as Round Rock finished off a four-game sweep of the Baby Cakes with a 3-2 win. Hayes snapped a scoreless deadlock with a home run in the fifth inning. Drew Stubbs then drew a walk against Justin Nicolino, stole second base, and scored on a single by Jurickson Profar. Snider s leadoff homer an inning later off Kelvin Marte stretched the lead to 3-0. The Cakes got on the board after Tomas Telis lead off the seventh with a triple and scored on a Moises Sierra ground out. Brandon Barnes added an RBI single in the eighth, but it wasn t enough as NOLA was shut down by R.J. Alvarez s fifth save of the season. Nicolino saw his three-game winning streak end after surrendering two runs and four hits in five innings. ON THE HILL William Cuevas takes the mound for the series opener for his second start at home with New Orleans. In his last start, Cuevas came away with the defeat in his second quality start of the season, holding Oklahoma City to two runs in six innings. Cuevas has started in four games with two appearances as a reliever holding a 1-2 record and a 3.04 ERA (8 ER/23.2 IP). All eight of Cuevas s runs allowed have come while on the road, despite starting only one of three games at home. He did not allow a run in his first 10.2 innings as a Baby Cake. Cuevas opened the season in the Detroit Tigers organization and pitched one game with Detroit and nine games with the Toledo Mudhens and was 2-4, 4.06 ERA before opting out of his agreement and joining New Orleans. new orleans baby cakes (38-60) vs. NASHVILLE SOUNDS (46-52) RHP William Cuevas (1-2, 3.04) vs. RHP Chris Jensen (4-1, 4.42) On This Date... BROOMS The Cakes were swept for the first time since their final road series of the 2016 season in Colorado Springs. It was the fourth time New Orleans has been swept at Dell Diamond, including a four-game series to end the 2012 campaign when NOLA was the designated home team. SI SI SIERRA Moises Sierra has recorded a hit in 21 of his last 25 starts, batting.359 (33x92) in those contests. Since June 2, Sierra is hitting.333 (50x150), and his nine steals in that span are tied for fifth-most in the league. With 10 home runs and 14 stolen bases, Sierra was the first NOLA player to reach double-digits in both categories by the All-Star break since 2004, when Chris Burke had 10 homers and 22 steals. TOMAS THE TRAIN In 37 games dating to May 23, Tomas Telis owns a.362 batting average (50x138), ranking ninth in the PCL in that span to go with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 18 RBI. Telis has registered a hit in 21 of 25 contests since returning from a stint with the Marlins. Telis collected his second triple of 2017; last year, he joined Rick Wrona (1994) as the only NOLA catchers with three triples in a season. 1997: Scott Elarton goes 8.0 innings to beat Louisville 4-2 in his Triple-A debut. Elarton yields four hits while striking out seven after being promoted from Double-A, where he was leading the Texas League with 141 strikeouts. LOW FIVE New Orleans has dropped five games in a row for the first time since July 20-24 last season. The Cakes had lost four in a row in Nashville until the April 30 contest, which had been suspended by rain in the fourth inning, was resumed and resulted in a 1-0 NOLA victory. FAST START Brian Anderson has a hit in five of his first six career Triple-A games, going 7x20 (.350) with two home runs and six RBI. Anderson s 16 total home runs this season places him one ahead of former Jacksonville teammate John Norwood for tops among Marlins farmhands. He also leads the organizastion with 61 RBI, 20 of which have come in his last 18 games. DIVISION WOES New Orleans has gone 9-25 against division rivals, the fewest victories in the PCL. Their.265 divisional winning percentage would rank ahead of only the 1999 club, which went 12-36 (.250). NOLA s 24-21 record within the division was the best among American South clubs last year. BARNYARD Brandon Barnes became the fourth Cakes player to steal two bases in a game, pushing his season total to a team-leading 15. Barnes also leads the club with 43 runs scored and is tied with Tomas Telis for second with 25 multi-hit games. Barnes is slashing.298/.357/.472 in 45 road games, compared with.242/.297/.327 in 43 games at home. THE LONELIEST NUMBER NOLA fell to 7-17 in one-run games, the second-worst mark in the league (Nashville, 7-19) after pacing the circuit with a 25-15 record last year. The Baby Cakes are a league-worst 14-29 in games decided by one or two runs. SENIOR CIRCUIT New Orleans is 13-27 against American League affliates. Baby Cakes designated hitters are batting.200 (30x150) with two home runs and 13 RBI. THE LONG BALL The Cakes have homered 11 times in their last 27 games, hitting the fewest in the PCL in both June (19) and July (9). Their their 77 on the year rank ahead of only Salt Lake (67). WHAT A RELIEF Drew Steckenrider tossed a scoreless eighth inning in his return to the Baby Cakes last night, the 13th time in his last 15 appearances he has not surrendered a run. Steckenrider has a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0) with 25 strikeouts and two walks in that span, during which opponents are batting.155 (9x58). ROSTER MOVES Right-hander Tayron Guerrero has been promoted from AA Jacksonville, where he made 17 relief appearances with a 3.38 ERA (6 ER/16.0) and 22 strikeouts. Brian Ellington has been promoted to the Miami Marlins, his third call-up of the year. Ellington is 1-0 with five saves and a 2.28 ERA in 20 games with the Baby Cakes, but has pitched to a 7.71 ERA in 11 big league outings. SCHEDULE CHANGE To accommodate league travel policy, Monday s game time has been moved up to 10:30 a.m. from 11 a.m. NAWLINS NOTES Chad Hinshaw is hitting.114 (4x35) with 17 strikeouts in 12 games in July, the lowest mark in the PCL this month... Austin Nola has nine home runs in 176 games since the start of last season, after hitting four homers in his first 453 career games... Justin Nicolino hit two batters in a game for the second time in his career, the last coming with Class A Jupiter in 2013...
