Character and purpose of the conference The ICG Annual Meeting is a regular annual conference held on years when the triennial International Congress on Glass does not meet. Academic societies and other associations of the member nations belonging to the International Commission on Glass (ICG) take part in the conference. Researchers and engineers dealing with glass and related technologies for industry, academia, and governments of nations around the world, gather to present the latest research findings and exchange views. In addition, Technical Committees of the ICG hold their own splinter meetings to discuss relevant research and development work. In accordance with the agreement on convening ICG Annual Meetings, meetings are organized in such a way that five or more technical sessions are convened simultaneously. The host of a conference is determined by a vote among ICG member nations held at the annual meeting three years earlier. 7. History of Congresses and Annual Meetings in Japan Japan joined the ICG through participation of the Ceramic Society of Japan (CerSJ), and became involved in various ICG activities primarily through the Glass Division of the CerSJ which was established in 1951. Japan hosted the 10th and 20th International Congresses in Kyoto in 1974 and 2004, respectively, and the ICG Annual Meeting in
Tokyo and Kyoto in 1966 and in Tokyo in 1991. Many researchers from across the public-private-academic spectrum have participated in ICG activities, and Professor Naohiro Soga of Kyoto University served as ICG President from 1994 to 1997. While Japan has not hosted an ICG event for over a decade, we submitted a bid host the Annual Meeting 2018 at the Annual Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in 2015, and Japan was selected to host the meeting. 8.
