Dance Recital Details Recital Day: Saturday, June 4 th, 2016 Dress Rehearsal: Thursday, June 2 nd or Friday, June 3 rd Location: Barnum Hall - Santa Monica High School 601 Pico Boulevard Santa Monica 90405 Introduction There are a lot of components involved in staging a dance recital. We ask that you carefully go over this information for our Dance Recital 2016. If you have any questions please visit the front desk at any time. THERE IS A LOT of information here which, if read and practiced, will continue to make our dance concerts fun, stress-free, and enjoyable for all. Thank you & enjoy the show experience! Who Participates In The Dance Recital? Participation in our dance recital is optional. Recital sign ups were accepted at the time of registration and required a costume fee to be turned in by Dec. 15. All students registered by Dec. 2015 may participate in our June 16 dance concert. If you are interested in participating and missed the deadline you may still fill out a costume request form at the front desk in case there becomes a costume or spot available. Thank you. Learning a dance routine is part of our regular curriculum at School of Dance & Music and classes will be learning dance routines all year round. Many routines are not performed at the end of the year recital, however are used as a teaching tool to work on a dancers group synchronization, memory and performance skills. Only a portion of every class is allotted to work on a choreographed dance routine that will be performed in the dance concert in June regardless of which students are or are not participating in the performance. We will also invite parents to come into the dance studio toward the end of the school year to watch the dance combination the dance class has been working on that will include all of the dancers in the class, even those who are not performing at the auditorium. What time and how long is the actual show? There are two shows this year, the first show starts promptly at 11:00am and the second show starts at 2:00pm on June 4 th. Students will be performing their routine one time in our recital. Every class has their own routine. The entire show will be no longer than a pleasant 1 hour - 1 hour 15 min. When should we arrive for our show... And what do I do on show day? Doors will open for you and the dancers 20 min before the show begins at 10:40am for the first show and 1:40pm for the second show. Don t be late, because the show will start promptly at 11:00am and 2:00pm, so tell your guests! There is parking at the auditorium, but if the spaces run out, there is additional parking across the street in a separate lot. Please plan accordingly and carpool if you can! As you arrive you will check your dancer in with the group volunteer at their designated seats in the auditorium. Once they are checked in you can find a seat for yourself. All dancers in more than one routine check in backstage and should be dressed in their first routines costume with the rest of their costumes in a bag or backpack. At the end of the show you will check out your dancer in their designated seats in the audience (where you initially checked them in). Please have just one parent check them out from the group volunteer. Ushers may also help you find your dancer s seats as long as you remember the routine name they are in. Please wait until the show has completely finished before checking out your dancer. You may then exit the auditorium and praise your dancer for a job well done! When Is Dress Rehearsal/ Picture Day? We will hold Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, June 2 nd and Friday June 3 rd, 2016 at Barnum Hall. We will keep you posted for the exact days and times of each class. Dress rehearsal is extremely important! Dancers will get to know the group volunteers and will become comfortable with the stage and backstage areas. Rehearsals are absolutely mandatory. PLEASE be on time for your dress rehearsal slot. We have a limited number of hours to rehearse and we must make every second count. Professional pictures will be taken on the day of dress rehearsal. The process of taking pictures & rehearsing the number on stage takes about an hour. We run a very strict schedule so please allow time for traffic/ finding your costume/ hair/ make-up/ and any other unexpected events.

How Do I Dress for Dress Rehearsal/ Picture Day? Dancers must arrive in full costume, full make-up, hair done, and with the correct shoes. Again, professional pictures (individual and group) are being taken this day. Students of all ages are encouraged to wear make-up for both the dress rehearsal and the show. Stage lights are strong; therefore plum or blue eye shadow and red lipstick are required if you wear makeup. Please leave your jewelry at home and please arrive already dressed. (If you are in more than one number, or have a fast change in between numbers please account for this ahead of time and provide the necessary assistance). Boys do not need to wear any make-up. Again, please come wearing your costume on both dress rehearsal day, and on recital day. Hair must be already done with any hair accessories intact. General Hair guidelines are as follows: ALL Ballet/Tap ages 3-4, 4-5, 5-6yrs classes wear their hair half up half down. ALL Ballet classes ages 6-Adult wear their hair in a bun. ALL Tap, Jazz & Hip Hop classes wear their hair in a secure ponytail. Any questions regarding hair or costume accessories should be asked before dress rehearsal so you can arrive to dress rehearsal ready to go What Shoes Do I Need? Costumes are due to arrive in mid-may. The following are required to be worn with your costumes: Ballet Routines = pink ballet shoes // Jazz Routines = black jazz shoes // Tap Routines = black tap shoes with regular black ties // Hip Hop Routines = all white or all black tennis shoes (Keds are inexpensive & work great!) Do I Wear Tights With My Costume? A pair of tights will be included with your costume for all jazz, tap and ballet costumes. For Hip Hop costumes please wear white socks. What If My Costume Doesn t Fit? Costumes are made to look great on stage and not made to stand up for everyday wear. Don t expect a costume to fit perfectly. They generally come in small med large sizes. If a costume is really not the correct size (too big OR too small), or needs major alterations, we provide a tailor a couple weeks prior to the show to alter your or your child s costume so it fits. Alterations are complimentary. When you get your costume, please try it on and if you need alterations, please make an appointment ASAP with the front desk. If the costume is too small, call the front desk ASAP so we can order a new one. Please do not make an appointment if your only alteration is to shorten your hem. There are no hems in costumes - the pants are meant to be cut ¾ inch above the ground (with your shoes on). Please only make an appointment with the tailor for major alterations. Alterations will be done then and there, or in some instances the costume will be given back within the week. Please also note that once our complimentary alteration day has past, we will not be able to alter your costume. We also ask for you not wear your costumes before dress rehearsal. Thank you! What Would My Responsibilities Be If I Volunteer? We need Volunteers! Be behind the scenes and see where the real action is! We will provide a free ticket to each of our volunteers per show they volunteer. Please fill out a volunteer form at the front desk and turn it back in ASAP. Volunteers are limited per class and are at a first come first serve basis. Volunteers arrive 30 minutes before the show starts. Please be on time so that your group can check in with you as soon as they arrive. Responsibilities of a group volunteer are on the Volunteer Form attached. How Do I Purchase Tickets for The Show? Tickets will be available for purchase on web.tututickets.com beginning on Friday, May 13 th at 10:00am. Tickets are charged per seat and will be sold for $15 if bought in advanced. Tickets will be sold at the auditorium on the day of the show for $18. Parent volunteers will not have to purchase a ticket for the show.
