My Beginning Recorder Book 1

My goal for recorder karate is to receive a belt. White belt Yellow belt Orange belt Green belt Purple belt Pink belt Blue belt Red belt Brown belt Black belt 2

1 2 3 4 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 3

How do you use this book? Each belt past white has two songs. You may choose one song to practice an play for the test but you must play both songs to pass black belt. Along the way there is information and assignments. Please read the information as it will help you! There are two assignments that must be done in order to pass that belt even if you play the other song! If you see a star it is an assignment! How to read recorder music! 1. Read/ clap the rhythm. 2. Move your fingers and say the note names to the correct rhythm. 3. Play! 4. Identify the hard spots. 5. Practice in hard spots in small chunks; over and over and over... 6. Still have mistake? Go back to #1!! 4

White Belt Hot Cross Buns time signature = 4 beats in each measure. 5

Yellow Belt Gently Sleep Gent ly sleep my sweet child. Gent ly sleep with that smile. Gent ly sleep lit tle one. Gent ly sleep day is done. breath mark When you see this symbol take a breath. Try only to take a breath every two measures. 6

Yellow Belt Pierrot In the shi ning moon light Pier rot stands at night. Ask ing for a pen cil ask ing for some light. breath mark When you see this symbol take a breath. Try only to take a breath every two measures. 7

Orange Belt Merrily We Roll Along Mer ri ly we roll a long roll a long roll a long. Mer ri ly we roll a long o're the deep blue sea. Can you think of any other songs that have this same melody? 8

Orange Belt Fais Dodo time signature = 3 beats in each measure. Tip: Count through the rhythm first then say the notes and move your fingers and lastly try to play the song. 9

Green Practice Starlight Starbright Star light star bright first star I see to night wish I may wish I might have the wish I wish to night. The more fingers you add the lower the sound goes because it makes the instrument longer. When you play lower notes you need less air. 10

Green Belt It's Raining It's rain ing it's pour ing the old man is snor ing. Went to bed and he bumped his head and he could n't get up in the morn ing. Measuring the distance between notes. Repeated notes stay on the same pitch. Steps move up or down to the next pitch. Skips move up or down by skipping one or more pitch. Can you find the repeated notes skips and steps in the song? Please find and identify one example of each! 11

Green Belt BAGE Blues 12

Purple Belt Old McDonald Purple Belt Old Brass Wagon 13

Pink Belt Aura Lee Pink Belt Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring What is the #? No that is not a #hashtag that is a sharp sign! # (sharp) = play a 1/2 step higher. (flat) = play a 1/2 step lower. When these signs are at the beginning of the music we call it the key signature. The key signature tells us to change all the notes on that line or space to a # or for the rest of the song. It is important to check the key signature so you know what notes to play. Start checking your notes because you will need to know they difference in a belt soon to come! 14

Blue Belt When The Saints Go Marching In A tie is a curved line which connects notes of the same pitch. Only the first note is played and then it is held for the total value of the connected notes. Blue Belt Amazing Grace Dotted quarter notes = 1 1/2 beats. The dot adds half the value of that note to make it longer. Eighth note = 1/2 beat. Two eighth notes joined by a beam get 1 beat so one note by itself gets 1/2 a beat! A fermata above a notes means to play the note a little longer. 15

Just for fun! Reveille How fast can you play it correctly? Fine D.C. al Fine D.C. al Fine when you get to the end of the piece you must go back to the beginning and play until you see the word Fine. Fine is Italian for "end." Reveille is a song the would play in the military to wake soldiers up in the morning. An anacrusis is a note that plays before the first down beat. The remaining beats from that measure are found at the end of the music. 16

Red Belt Twinkle Twinkle Red Belt If Your Happy 17

The F is a very hard note to play! Play slowly at first and be careful to place your fingers in the correct spot! Brown Belt Morning Edvard Grieg Brown Belt From the New World Antonin Dvorak A repeat sign tells you to play the song again. 18

Black Belt Remember that lower notes need less air! Blow lightly! You must play BOTH songs to pass Black Belt! C Scale c c Camptown Races Stephen Foster 19

Just for fun! Happy Birthday Bingo Funga Alafia 20
