January / February / March 2015 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron www.desertmashie.o rg FROM THE PRESIDENT: Hello Fellow Mashies, Well, it s Spring, the 1 st Quarter has ended, and there are less than 9 months left in the year. 2015 has brought us some great weather, so far, and it seems we are off to an early summer. As Leonard Walker and I were chatting a few days ago, he asked a rhetorical question wouldn t it be great if the weather stayed like this for the whole year. But he quickly answered that, stating if it did, there would be more people relocating here than we could shake a stick at. All I could say was so true.. In case you missed our previous notes, or simply forgot, our 67 th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament is being held next month. Our host hotel and course will be the beautiful Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, AZ. There will be a practice round on Friday, May 1, and the tournament will start on Saturday, May 2, and run through Sunday, May 3. We are less than a month away from the start of the tournament, and while members and guests are signing up every day, we are still looking for more of our members to get registered and come out and support their club at this event. The Valley View GC advised they will bring a busload of golfers and non-golfers from Las Vegas, and a large delegation will be coming from Desert Trails Golf Club in Tucson. 1 LAST DATE FOR TOURNAMENT SIGN UP: APRIL 20 LAST DATE FOR GUARANTEED ROOM RATES: APRIL 15 I am asking our members to also make an extra effort by signing up to play in this tournament, and bring your family and friends. The same goes for our non-golfer members - we need your support, also. In order for our Club to continue to grow and be successful, we must have participation by ALL members. I know some of you like to get on your feet, and get your groove on, so for your enjoyment and entertainment, there will be a band on Saturday night to entertain us. For those who won t be participating in the dancing, you can sit back and enjoy the music. So, whatever your pleasure, come on out and help us celebrate our 67 th Annual.
Included in this Newsletter are instructions on how to get registered to play in the Practice Round as well as how to get registered to play in the tournament. I went up to Los Angeles in February to attend the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) Board of Directors Meeting. The main outcome of the meeting was that the 2015 Budget was passed. Also, during the meeting we were given an update on the WSGA 61 st Annual which will be held in Portland, Oregon during the week of June 22 through June 27. The February Board meeting is always held the day after the Martha Hightower Annual Tournament. So, since I was going to Los Angeles for the Board meeting, I signed up to play in the Southern Area Youth Programs, Inc. (SAYPI), 34 th Annual Hightower Tournament which was held at the Chester Washington Golf Course. This was a scramble event, and my team won 2 nd place. Incidentally, Chester Washington Golf Course is WSGA s home course. As luck would have it, as guests of Granville and Ellen Brown, Norma and I attended the SAYPI s reception on Thursday Evening. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and saw none other than Mr. Calvin Peete who was meeting, greeting and getting pictures taken with many of the attendees at this fabulous event. So, you know me, since we were that close to this legendary golfer, we hopped right in line to have our pictures taken with him, too. 2 Respectfully yours, Leroy H. James President

We ve had some exciting things happening this year. Danny Johnson got his very first HOLE-IN-ONE on Hole #8, 171 yard, par 3, at Ken McDonald on Sunday, February 22. This hole-in-one was extra special for Danny in 3 ways. 1) It was his first. 2) In his 16 years of golfing, this was the first time he has even been in a group where anyone in the group got a hole-in-one. 3) Since this was a Desert Mashie tournament, Danny was the recipient of $500. Danny is the first Desert Mashie Hole-In-One recipient for the year. WAY TO GO DANNY! CONGRATULATIONS to George Colebrook who is playing his first tournament in almost a year. George is currently in Southern California playing in Pacific Desert Classic s Annual this weekend. During the past year, George has experienced quite a few challenges. He became gravely ill while enroute to the WSGA 60 th Annual last year and had to have emergency surgery, lost his mom in June, and had knee surgery in December. We are thankful for George s recovery and his resiliency. GOOD LUCK GEORGE -- WE ARE HAPPY YOU ARE BACK!! 5
Danny Johnson and his Tournament Committee are busily making plans for you to have a great time when you attend our 67 th Annual. Whether you will be joining us, or not, for this celebration (but we hope you will), you are invited to sponsor a hole. This is a fundraiser for our Annual, and you can sponsor a hole in this tournament for only $100.00. You can have your name(s), or the name of your business reflected as the sponsor of the hole. If you would like to sponsor a hole, please contact Carolyn Suttles at (623) 535-1988, or e-mail bayne0312@gmail.com. 6 We are in the process of scheduling a General Meeting for Thursday, April 23, so mark your calendar. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Hensley Beverage, 4201 N. 45 th Avenue, Phoenix. An e-mail will be sent out to confirm the meeting within the next couple of days.
NEW APPOINTMENTS As you were previously advised, Danny Johnson has accepted the TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN position. This is a huge position, and we are very lucky that Danny has accepted the position. Danny has been in this position since January, so if you haven t congratulated him already, please do so when you see him, and give him your full support and cooperation. In addition to this being a big job, Danny stepped into the position less than 4 months prior to the 67 th Annual which was already in the planning stages. So, it goes without saying, he has been extremely busy. We are very fortunate to have and be able to advise you that Al Loveless has accepted the RULES CHAIRMAN position. Al is a man of high integrity, and is an excellent choice for our golf club and the game of golf. This is a very important position which we desperately needed, but has been vacant for a long time, and now we have the right man for the job. When you see Al, please congratulate him on this new assignment, and give him your full support and cooperation. 7 As previously reported, Cecil Mosley is still our HANDICAP CHAIRMAN. This is a very busy position which revolves throughout the year. It starts when a person joins, and is a moving target all year long. Also, at year-end, all members who have not renewed their membership are deleted from the GHIN System, and Cecil must re-enter them when they do renew. In addition to maintaining the handicaps, Cecil also enters all members tournament scores for Desert Mashie.

to all of our Juniors who played in this tournament. There were 192 juniors registered for this tournament, so JGAA needed volunteers for Registration, Starters, Scorekeepers, Spotters, and Runners to assist these junior golfers during the tournament, and Desert Mashie members again rose to the occasion. In addition to himself, Harold Fields, was able to pull together 12 more volunteers to assist in this event both days. 11 These volunteers deserve to be recognized for their efforts. A big and to the following members for your time and assistance in helping to make this tournament a success. GOLF JOKE Stevie Wonder & Jack Nicklaus Stevie Wonder and Jack Nicklaus are in a bar. Nicklaus turns to Wonder and says, "How is the singing career going?" Stevie Wonder says, "Not too bad, the latest album has gone into the top 10, so all in all I think it is pretty good. By the way how is the golf." Nicklaus replies: "Not too bad, I am not winning as much as I used to but I'm still making a bit of money. I have some problems with my swing but I think I've got that right now." "I always find that when my swing goes wrong I need to stop playing for a while and think about it, then the next time I play it seems to be all right," says Stevie. "You play golf!?" asks Jack. Stevie says, "Yes, I have been playing for years." "But I thought you were blind; how can you play golf if you are blind?" Jack asks. "I get my caddie to stand in the middle of the fairway and he calls to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball towards him, then when I get to where the ball lands the caddie moves to the green or further down the fairway and again I play the ball towards his voice," explains Stevie. "But how do you putt?" Nicklaus wondered. 13 "Well," says Stevie, "I get my caddie to lean down in front of the hole and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball to the sound of his voice." Nicklaus says, "What is your handicap?" "Well, I play off scratch," Stevie assures Jack. Nicklaus is incredulous and says to Stevie, "We must play a game sometime." Wonder replies, "Well, people don't take me seriously so I only play for money, and I never play for less than $100,000 a hole." Nicklaus thinks it over and says, "OK, I'm up for that. When would you like to play?" "I don't care - any night next week is OK with me."
Just for laughs Hawk and Tom were talking in the bar. Hawk said," I just got kicked off the course for breaking 60." Tom looked at him, amazed. " Breaking 60? That's amazing!" Hawk smiled and said," Yeah, I never knew a golf cart could go that fast!" A guy stood over his tee shot for what seemed an eternity; looking up, looking down, measuring the distance, figuring the wind direction and speed and driving his partner nuts. Finally his exasperated partner says, "What's taking so long? Hit the blasted ball." The guy answers, "My wife is up there watching me from the clubhouse. I want to make this a perfect shot." "Forget it, you don't stand a chance of hitting her from here." A RETIRED PERSON S PERSPECTIVE From: Doc Watts 1. I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out. 2. I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now. 14 3. You can tell a lot about a woman's mood just by her hands. If they are holding a gun, she's probably pissed. 4. Gone are the days when girls cooked like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. 5. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone you've just met? That's common sense leaving your body. 6. I don't like making plans for the day. Because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom. 7. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes 1,500 days in a row. 8. I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. 9. Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers. If you find one, what's your plan? 10. Everyone has a right to be stupid. Politicians just abuse the privilege.

Or suffer the wrath of Al Question..Dean is playing Tiger in a strokeplay competition. Dean finds his ball in a bunker with an acorn resting against it which he removes. Tiger says I don't think you can move that to which Dean replies..yes I can its a loose impediment...so you say but I still think you can't move it says Tiger...who is right?and what is the ruling? Answer: Dean is wrong (again).. A player may remove a loose impediment however an Acorn is not a loose impediment and should not be removed. The definition of a loose impediment is anything artificial such as a sweet wrapper or a rake..anything that is a natural object such as leaves, twigs, acorns etc are not classed as loose impediments..however the committee can declare stones in bunkers to be loose impediments..this will normally be stated on noticeboards or on scorecards.. The ruling in this instance is that under Rule 13-4c Dean will incur a penalty of two strokes. Question..Dean hits his tee shot and thinks it may be out of bounds.he says to his playng partners "I think that's gone I'll play another".dean then finds his first ball in bounds within five minutes...what is the ruling? Answer: The 2nd ball is the ball in play, even though the original ball was found within 5 minutes because Dean(doh!) did not specify that he was playing a provisional ball meaning he has now played 3 off the tee. (see Decisions 27-2a/1) 15 Hole In One POT The club has initiated a $500 Hole-in-One Pot. Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the $500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during the same event, the prize fund will be divided.
