Text B - you read this online blog My 2010 One Young World Summit by Sanyah When I first heard about the One Young World Summit in London, I couldn t wait to apply. It brings together 1,500 young people from around the world to talk about issues such as climate change and hunger relief. To be selected as a speaker at the summit, you have to show leadership ability and a commitment to changing the world in a positive way. I m from Nepal and studying at a university for women in Bangladesh. My teachers encouraged me to go for it. It cost 3,000 euros - a lot of money for me - but I did some fundraising, found a sponsor and my family helped me out. When I found out I d been successful, I was overjoyed and started getting ready for the experience of a lifetime. 8 February - opening ceremony by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Amazing! I was so lucky to be there, listening to lots of interesting people who care about the world. Finally, the two founders of One Young World, David Jones and Kate Robertson, appeared on stage with big smiles and announced the official opening of the summit. 9 10 February - speech days: the six chosen speakers - including me - spoke about issues such as protecting the environment, how global business can shape society and world religions. My speech was about why it s important for women journalists to be an equal part of the media. I based this on the challenges women journalists in Nepal have and my own experience of online journalism. Then there was a question and answer session and a vote on the main issues. Thousands of young people around the world also voted online. I even had an interview on BBC Nepali about how to empower, encourage and inspire young people in Nepal. The BBC World Service broadcast a live programme about the summit to 60 million people around the world. Awesome! 11 February: set off for home. What a life-changing experience. I enjoyed so many things about the summit and gained a lot of confidence. I m most proud of encouraging young people to work together to change their community. A delegate from Canada asked if it was possible to volunteer in Nepal and I ve helped her with that. Hopefully, next year we ll all meet again and talk about what a difference we ve made in the world. Functional Skills Reading Level 1 AF - Sample Page 9 of 12
