You are interested in what brings young people from across the world together. You decide to find out more on the internet. Text A you read this webpage about the Youth Olympic Games Kiteboarding comes to the Youth Olympic Games Young kiteboarders from around the world can now compete for the first time in the next Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mirco Babini, President of the International Kiteboarding Association said: This is an important development in our Olympic journey and we are excited that young kiteboarders will be given the first opportunity to showcase their talent at the Youth Olympics The Games will feature an event for the best 12 male and best 12 female kiteboarders in the world. Also, for the first time in a sailing competition, both male and female competitors can represent the same country. So, what are the Youth Olympic Games? Just like the Olympic Games, the Youth Olympics Games are held every four years. The Games bring together over 3,500 talented young athletes, aged between 15 and 18, from every corner of the globe. It lasts for 12 days and features 28 different sports such as archery, track cycling and beach volleyball and now kiteboarding! Functional Skills Reading Level 1 AF - Sample Page 4 of 12

What makes the Games different from other youth sports events is its Culture and Education Programme. The programme reaches out to young people in an entirely new way. It contributes to the athletes personal development and introduces them to the Olympic values. The programme is based around certain themes including social responsibility, skills development and healthy lifestyles. Are there any other new sports at the next Games? As well as kiteboarding, other sports will be joining the Olympic programme for the first time such as BMX freestyle, cross country running and beach handball. It has also been decided that futsal will replace football at the Games. This is played on a smaller field and usually indoors. Other sports such as skateboarding, sport climbing and roller sports may also be included. Nearly as many women as men will complete in this year s Games. For more information about the Games, visit: https://www.olympic.org/youtholympic-games These exciting new events are an opportunity to showcase the sporting superstars of tomorrow. Hockey legend Luciana Aymar is an Ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games. She says: I hope that in my role as an Ambassador and by sharing all of my amazing experiences from hockey, I will be able to inspire young people, not only in terms of sport, but also as human beings. Text B - you read this online blog My 2010 One Young World Summit by Sanyah When I first heard about the One Young World Summit in London, I couldn t wait to apply. It brings together 1,500 young people from around the world to talk about issues such as climate change and hunger relief. To be selected as a speaker at the summit, you have to show leadership ability and a commitment to changing the world in a positive way. I m from Nepal and studying at a university for women in Bangladesh. My teachers encouraged me to go for it. It cost 3,000 euros - a lot of money for me - but I did some fundraising, found a sponsor and my family helped me out. When I found out I d been successful, I was overjoyed and started getting ready for the experience of a lifetime. 8 February - opening ceremony by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Amazing! I was so lucky to be there, listening to lots of interesting people who care about the world. Finally, the two founders of One Young World, David Jones and Kate Robertson, appeared on stage with big smiles and announced the official opening of the summit. Functional Skills Reading Level 1 AF - Sample Page 8 of 12

9 10 February - speech days: the six chosen speakers - including me - spoke about issues such as protecting the environment, how global business can shape society and world religions. My speech was about why it s important for women journalists to be an equal part of the media. I based this on the challenges women journalists in Nepal have and my own experience of online journalism. Then there was a question and answer session and a vote on the main issues. Thousands of young people around the world also voted online. I even had an interview on BBC Nepali about how to empower, encourage and inspire young people in Nepal. The BBC World Service broadcast a live programme about the summit to 60 million people around the world. Awesome! 11 February: set off for home. What a life-changing experience. I enjoyed so many things about the summit and gained a lot of confidence. I m most proud of encouraging young people to work together to change their community. A delegate from Canada asked if it was possible to volunteer in Nepal and I ve helped her with that. Hopefully, next year we ll all meet again and talk about what a difference we ve made in the world. Functional Skills Reading Level 1 AF - Sample Page 9 of 12
