North added 8-1 in this term, after kicking 6-16 up to three-quarter-time and scored by 11 points. After an even first half Caailfield. Grammarians ran right away from Ivanhoe in the second and won by more than 8 goals. Ivanhoe only kicked one goal after the interval. Melbourne High School Old Boys, Hampton Rovers, AJAX. and Heatherton,, winners of their respective Second Semi-Finals, have earned promotion to a higher Section, next season, and Hampton Rovers who won the Second Semi- Final in Junior Section 2 will move up to Section 1 in 1976. North and University Blacks staged an even first half, with North 4 points ahead at the interval. Both sides had missed many chances to score goals but Blacks missed more deliberate shots. They played only in bursts and when they did, they looked the more' impressive side. The third quarter belonged to the Blacks - they showed more determination and confidence, while their more accurate attack enabled them to go to a 19-point lead at three-quarter time and they looked to be in a sound position. But the Black's didn't count on North's deadly accuracy in the last quarter. Twice North ran to an 11-point lead and twice Blacks cut their deficit to 5 points, but they couldn't get the vital goal to restore their lead. Caulfield Grammarians, edged to a lead of 9 points over Ivanhoe at the interval, but then Ivanhoe faded right out and were beaten by 50 points. They managed only 4 points in the third quarter and 1-3 in the last, while Caulfield finished on strongly. Old Ivanhoe and Parkside also staged an even first half, when Old Ivanhoe led by 7 points but they broke away to gain a 23-point advantage at the last change. Parkside folded up in the final quarter and Old Ivanhoe ran on to score easily by over 9 goals. Melbourne High and St. Kilda CBC started in a burst of goals, each side kicking seven in the first term, but St. Kilda ran to a handy lead of 16 points at the interval. High gained a little ground in. the third term, to trail by 10 points, but finished more strongly than their opponents and ran out winners by - 8 points. Old Geelong gained an early lead over Old Xaverians and were nearly four goals in front at half time. Xaverians did better in the second half, but Old Geelong were not troubled to win by 31 points. Hampton Rovers and Fawkner staged a ding-dong struggle, with the Rovers scraping home by 2 points with the last kick of the match. Hampton's better kicking gave them a 71poin!t lead at the half-way mark, but they lapsed into inaccuracy in the third term when Fawkner got up to lead by a point. Both sides were off target in the tense final term, Rovers adding 2-8 to Fawkner's 2-5. A.M.P. Society staged a great re covery to down St. Pat's-Monivae by 14 points. St. Pat's looked the winners with a 23-point lead at half time and were still 15 points to the good at the final change but A.M.P. kicked 6-2 to 1-3 in the last quarter to snatch victory. A 10-goal bust in the first quarter gave AJAX a strong grip on the game I against Elsternwick. Elsternwick, 10 goals down at threequarter time, threw away any chances they had of pulling the game out of the fire, when they kicked 2-14 in the last term, and were beaten by 61 points. Bulleen United kicked 7 goals in the second quarter to go to a 19-point lead over Thornbury and although this advantage was cut to 9 points at threequarter time Bulleen finished better and ran out winners by 5 goals. Heatherton and Monash Whites were evenly matched for three quarters, but Heatherton streaked away in the last, adding 8-3 to a goal and won by 37 points. In the Junior games, Ormond led Ivanhoe all day and won very easily by 13 goals. Coburg gained a 26-point break over University Blues in the first half and although the Blues matched them after the interval, they were unable to make up the leeway and went down by 3 goals. Reservoir O.B. went to a 3-goal lead over Old Carey at the interval and this was how it finished up., Six goals in the second quarter gave North Old Boys a narrow lead over Page 4 Hampton Rovers and they jumped further ahead to be 20 points in front at three-quarter-time. The Rovers swamped North with a burst of 8 in the last quarter and won by 3 goals. Most of the Reserve Section Games produced clear cut wins, the exception being Parkside's 5-point win over St. Kilda CBC, whose poor kicking caused their downfall. Power House beat Melbourne High by 15 points, Fawkner beat Old Geelong by 3 goals, ANZ Bank went down to West Brunswick by two goals and Bulleen United beat Glenroy by 11 points. The defeat of AJAX in the E Reserve Section Se --ond Semi-Final will delay the remaining matches in this Section, as advised prior to the start of the season. The Final will be held next Saturday, September 13th and the Gran d Final on September 20th. As AJAX won the Second Semi-Final in E SEC- TION no alteration to the programme will be necessary in that Section. NUMBERS TO NOTE Clubs in A Section should note these numbers. KILDA SCRIBE REACHES 100 St. Kilda CBOC press correspondent, Gerard Spence, today plays his 100th game for the club. At only 21, Gerard has many more games left in him. He has played most of his football as either a rover or wingman but has played in just about every other flank position. Gerard won the "Best First Year Player Award" in 1971 and "Most Determined" in 1973. He has been on the committee for the last four years and is always willing to do any task that is asked of him. Congratulations Gerard. Mark "Bozo" Robertson 20, and Paul Nanscawen 16, both played their 50th game for Bulleen United last Saturday. Mark is in his third season with the club and is actively involved with its social activities. Paul started with the Under 15's in 1973 and won the Best and Fairest award last season. IT'S HIS 150TH TODAY Owing to an injury sustained the week before Michael Mahoney failed to play his 150th game for St. Bernard's last home and home game of the season. Today Mick plays his 150 game against Reservoir and we all hope it is one of your greatest. In the second last home and home game Peter Johnson played his 50th game for St. Beri3ard's. Since joining the club Peter has played many fine games and his good form was rewarded with a couple of senior games during the year. Everybody hones Peter your good form will help the club in the second semi-final today. Congratulations Peter and all the best for future seasons. Congratulations to Ray Shepherd and Steve Wilson for playing their 50th games for Reservoir Old Boys. The two plavers have only been with Reservoir for a short time but they have both contributed to the club's success. Ray is a very skilful player and delivers the ball well to position while Steve is a very determined player doing a lot of work in the packs. Well done chaps - keep up the good work. Michael "Circus" Meaney recently played his 50th game for St. Kilda CBOC. Mick is a well known identity down at the club, especially with his smart dressing. He has shown everybody this year how well he can play in the ruck. His fine ruck work, sure kicking and safe marking has been an inspiration to all his fellow players. With a bit more dedication, earlier Friday nights and fewer injuries, "Circus" would probably be starring in the firsts. Congratulations Mick. LOOKING BACM By Noel Rundl e 5 Years Ag o Peter `Tubby' Atkinson became the second player to play 150 games for St. Bernard's O.C. Finals umpires were G. M. Simpson, Hagarty, Marshall, D. R. Dodds, and Mason. Old Carey defeated U.H.S.O.B. by 1 5 points in second semi-final in 'C' Section with Freeman (27 kicks), Birrell, and Redford (5 goals), best for Carey, and Hanton, Ashmead and Seath (5 goals) Uni. High's best. Coburg went into the Grand Final for the second year in a row when they were too strong all day for Ormond, even though Ormond got within 9 points at the last change. Coburg kicked 7.4 to 3.2 in the final quarter. Old Scotch returned to 'A' Section with an easy last quarter victory over Geelong. Brunswick centreman Rusell Abernathy celebrated his 100th game with the club with a fantastic display of football which put his club into the 'E' Section Grand Final. 10 Years Ago University Blacks outclassed Collegians to win the second semi-final by over 100 points - at half time Blacks led 12.6 to 1.3 and continued to pile on the goals in second half. Burston, Galbraith and Browne (7 goals) were best. Caulfield Grammarians won their way into 'A' Section with a strong last quarter of 5.5 to Old Scotch's solitary goal. Williams, Ward and Cayzer starred. Geoff Ward won 'B' section best and fairest with 18 points from B. Conway (De La Salle) 17, Nell McColl (Geelong) 16, and Evan Logan (Ivanhoe) 15. In 'C' section Les Thompson (West Brunswick( careered away with 28 points ; runner up was Andrew Home of Old Haileybury, 14 points. Finals umpires were Stirling, Loy, Marsdeṙ, Marks, Duckworth, Sheedy and McKay. 25 Years Ago Ormond and Old Melburnians met in the second semi-final in slippery conditions with Ormond's defence in control - allowing O.M.'s only 3 points after quarter time. Final scores were Ormond 6.19 to O.M.'s 3.3. Best-for Ormond were Joe Sheehan, Eric Donaldson (celebrating his 50th game) and Bob Rowse. The win put Ormond into the Grand Final - the eighth in 13 full seasons since the club's inception in 1932 in 'D' Section. In 'D' Section East Malvern finished too strongly in the Semi-final against U.H.S.O.B. to win the right to play Power House in the Final. RESERVOIR'S CAPTAIN IS BEST AND FAIREST Michael Bates, captain of Reservoir Old Boys, scored a runaway win in the voting for Best and Fairest player in A Section, finishing 10 points ahead of his nearest rival. Mick, who plays in the ruck, polled votes in 11 matches, including seven first votes, and scored a total of 27 points. Monash Blues rover,, Peter Golding, wa s second, with four firsts,, two seconds and a third for 17 points. Two points further back was Ian Davis, of Geelong, who was third in 1974, then came Gerry Carroll (Old Paradians) and Shane Maguire (North Old Boys). Four of the five represented Victoria' in Interstate matches this season, the exception being Gerry Carroll. Besides the winner, Carroll and Maguire are captains of their sides, and Davis is vice-captain. The winner in B Section was John Morgan of Old Scotch, by a point from Old Carey ruckman, Mike Birreli. Birrell won the B Section award in 1971 and again in 1972 and was then beaten by a point in 1973. Last year he played only a few games, spending most of the season on a tour around Australia. The highest number of votes went to Max Johnston, of University High School Old Boys, who took the honours in C Section with 32 points - he polled 10 first votes and one second, but had only four points to spare from K. White (St. Kilda CBOC) - who got 7-3-I. C. Rowston of Hampton Rovers, easily won in D Section with 28 points (including votes in 12 matches - and seven firs's), while the E Section winner, Mike Ritterman (AJAX), also secured votes in 12 matches and won easily with 27 points. The F Section award was won on a countback by B. O'Sullivan (Glenroy) from D. Cowen (Thornbury). Each polled 19 points, but O'Sullivan had five firsts and Cowen four firsts. Maxwell 2 1 BLUES' STAR IS 1975 RHODES SCHOLAR University Blues centre-man, 22-year-old Chris Maxwell, is the Victorian Rhodes Scholar for 1975, and he will be leaving for Ena'and at the end of this month. Chris did a combined Arts and Law course at Melbourne University and will under'ake a Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University. Chris, who attended Melbourne Grammar School, started with University Juniors in 1971 and was third in the Association Best and Fairest voting in the Junior Section that season, when he was voted Best Team Man for his club. (He was well up in the B Section voting this year with 15 points, and topped University Blues "Best Players" list with 21 points - seven firsts). He played 15 or so games with the Juniors before joining the Blues in the Grand Final the same year and has been with them ever sinc2. He has played about 70 senior games and hopes to rejoin his club after his sojourn at Oxford. Besides the centre, Chris has played on the wing and half-forward line, where his G ft. and 13 stone can be used to advantage. His activities are not confined to the playing side of football - he was member of the Board of Management of the Melbourne University Football Club in 1971-72, Vice-President in 1974-75 and is Social Chairman this year. He played Inter-Varsity football for Melbourne in 1972 and 1973, and gained selection in the All-Australian Inter-Varsity team at the Perth Carnival in 1972. Chris playes cricket with the University club - in the Thirds and Fourths - and also enjoys a social game of golf and tennis. Let's quote Chris - "There won't be much football in England so I shall try and work on my cricket, which badly needs it!" He was selected in the Victorian squad for the 1976 Carnival at Adelaide and is a little disappointed that he will miss the opportunity of wearing the Big White "V". But there doesn't appear to be any reason why he should not be in the running for selection in the Victorian team for the Carnival at Hobart in 1979. But if the Blues win the 1975 premiership, this will be a happy note on which Chris wil ldepart the scene of Victorian Amateur football, and the memory of having played in a Finals side should spur him on to a successful term of study on "the other side. " We wish him every success in his venture, bon voyage, and a happy return to his home "town" at the end of his course.
