Volunteer support is necessary for the food stand to operate. Please consider giving a few hours of your time to help. Available shifts and sign-up information will be coming soon. Character Counts! Throughout 4-H Ribbons and trophies are only a small part of 4-H competitions and events with character development the cornerstone. Parents are a powerful influence on the behavior their children exhibit. At 4-H events, members are expected to follow a code of conduct based on the Six Pillars of Character: respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship, and trustworthiness. When parents practice the Six Pillars, especially during the heat of competition, kids are more likely to embrace those values. Parents should strive to do the following at 4-H events: Treat 4-H members, parents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension staff, judges, and others with respect. Avoid insults, name calling, and yelling. Model the importance of obeying the laws and 4-H rules as an obligation of citizenship, responsibility, fairness, and trustworthiness. Model kindness and compassion. Recognize that everyone has unique skills and talents that can be used to help others and the community. Teach fairness by being open to others ideas, suggestions, and opinions. Treat all 4-H members impartially. Provide a safe environment, not carelessly or intentionally harming youth or adults in any way - verbally, emotionally, or physically. By following these guidelines, parents provide a positive 4-H experience not only for their children, but for other youth and adults at the Otoe County Fair.

4-H Communication Contest It s time to start thinking about your topic for the 4-H Communications Contest. Youth gain valuable communication skills by participating in the 4-H Communication Contest. There are cash awards for the top four 4-H ers in the Junior and in the Senior Division, plus plaques for the top 4-H er in the Junior and Senior Division. Check out the Otoe County Fair Book on page 11 for all the details, but brief rules are as follows: 1. Individuals or teams of two may compete in the Illustrated Presentation. The Teaching Presentation and 4-H FilmFest are for individuals only. 2. A 4-H member need not be enrolled in the project area in which they are making a presentation. 3. Classes include: a) Illustrated Presentation b) Teaching (Trade Show Exhibit) Presentation c) 4-H FilmFest (Digital Video) 4. The time limit for the Illustrated Presentation is 6 to 8 minutes for individuals and 8 to 10 minutes for teams. The time limit for the Teaching Presentation is 30 minutes for individuals. The length of the 4-H FilmFest varies on video presentation selected. 5. If you are 10 or older as of January 1, 2016, and you would like to be considered for the Nebraska State Fair, your 4-H Presentation should be related to how you are learning about science, agricultural literacy, citizenship, or healthy living through your 4-H experiences or 4-H projects. The 4-H Communications Contest is Tuesday, July 19 at the Fair Center in Syracuse beginning at 7:00 p.m. Pre-registration is due July 13. For more information or to pre-register contact the Extension Office at 402-269-2301. Sarah is available to work with 4-H ers on their presentation. Please call for an appointment.
