MIAMI REDHAWKS BASEBALL GAME NOTES Series Histories Miami faced two of the three teams in its bracket this season, dropping two of three at Eastern Michigan before taking two of three from Toledo at home. In both cases, the team that won the opener lost the next two. Central Michigan was one of two West Division teams that the RedHawks did not face in 2012 (Western Michigan was the other). Miami leads the all-time series with Toledo by an 83-58-1 margin. This marks the third straight year that the teams have met in the first round of the MAC Tournament, with each teams winning once. Eastern Michigan holds a 56-45 alltime advantage, while Central Michigan stands 58-41 against the RedHawks. The RedHawks have won at least one game in 14 of their appearances. Against its current bracket, Miami is 1-2 against Toledo, 4-3 against Central Michigan and 4-4 against Eastern Michigan. A more complete MAC Tournament summary can be found on page four. At Neutral Sites Miami participated in six neutral-site games this year with the RedHawks winning four of those. They split two games against Michigan State in Greenville, S.C., in February before winning three of four in Florida over Spring Break. Counting away games, Miami is 13-18 away from Oxford this year. Series Records Miami won four of its nine conference series enroute to a 12-15 record this year. The RedHawks were involved in three sweeps, winning against Akron, but losing to Northern Illinois and Kent State. Miami took two of three from Toledo, Bowling Green and Ohio, while finishing 1-2 against Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. Hit Streaks Senior Ryan Brenner hit safely in the first 15 games this season, the longest streak the team this season. Matt Honchel s current 12-game run is tied with Bryce Redeker for the second-longest this year, while Nate Bowles (11) also reached double-digits. In terms of reaching base, Redeker had a 21-game run earlier this season, while Honchel put together streaks of 17 games (ended April 15) and 15 games (active). Win Total Miami needs two more victories to register 30 wins for the season. The RedHawks have topped that mark in 12 of the last 14 years, including five of six under Coach Dan Simonds. In 2011, Miami had 35 victories, its highest total since taking 45 in 2005. 2 2012 Miami Baseball

Honchel Hits After a 1-for-16 slide in mid-april, freshman Matt Honchel has returned to early-season form. He has hit safely in 14 of the 15 games (12 straight) with multiple hits in 11 of those (seven of the last nine as well). Honchel is 29-of-67 (.433) over Miami s last 15 games. The Harrodsburg, Ky., native is tied for 10th nationally in hitting at.401 and has hit safely in 44 of the RedHawks 55 games. Honchel has 30 multiple-hit games this year and has posted three hitting streaks of eight games or more. The RedHawks have reached double figures in 34 contests this year, including 23 of the last 32 outings. Miami had 10 hits in the first two games against Ohio before registering eight in the finale. The season high is 16 against Toledo (April 1) and at Indiana (April 24). MIAMI REDHAWKS BASEBALL GAME NOTES Full of RedHawks Miami has had a lot of success this year when batting with the bases loaded. The RedHawks are hitting.375 (24-of-64) when three runners are on base, including 2-of-5 at Ohio. The top two hitters in that situation are Bryce Redeker (5-for-9) and John Crummy (4-for-7). Matt Honchel (3-forsix) leads a group of players at.500. MAC Awards Miami players were recipients of four Mid-American Conference weekly awards this year, including two by senior lefty Shawn Marquardt. The RedHawks Sunday starter was chosen as Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 20-26 and March 5-11. Junior Kevin Bower (Feb 17-19) and freshman Matt Honchel (March 26-April 1) were Player of the Week honorees for the East Division. Power Outage For the second straight year, home run hitting has been down and in the RedHawks case, dramatically. Miami has 10 home runs in 55 games this year, led by Bryce Redeker with four. Until Kevin Bower s two-run shot at Buffalo on April 29, the RedHawks went 14 games without a round-tripper, but now have two in the last 11 games. Miami s pitching staff has allowed 21 during the year, with six of those by Kent State. First Years Going Yard Freshman Max Andresen connected for his first career home run in the series finale against Akron on May 6. He hit a 1-0 pitch in the second to put Miami up 2-0. Freshman Scott Slappey is the only other RedHawk to hit his first career home run this year -- at Furman Feb. 18. Taking a Base One of the best base-stealing teams in the country last year, Miami s ability to take a base has been nearly non-existent in 2012. The RedHawks have been successful on only 51 of 86 attempts (.593). Ryan Brenner is the team leader with 18 thefts, followed by Bryce Redeker (11) and Matt Honchel (10). A year ago, the RedHawks averaged 1.57 steals per game (96 in 60) with Brenner ranking second (39 of 48). Turning Two After turning at least one double play in each of the first 24 games this year, Miami now has just 10 in its last 31 contests. Against Ohio, the RedHawks turned one in Saturday s game. Miami led the country in the category for the first half of the season, but has now fallen to 69th with 47. The season-high is four in the 9-8 win at Ole Miss on March 2. Big Innings Miami has posted its biggest seventh innings of the season in the last month. The RedHawks tallied five against Northern Illinois on April 15 and six vs. Dayton on April 18. Miami has scored at least five runs in a single frame on seven occasions this year and has tallied four runs nine times, including in the fourth inning against Cincinnati on May 9. The biggest inning of the season in nine against Canisius on March 14. Pencil them In Seniors Bryce Redeker and Ryan Brenner are the last two RedHawks to have started every game this year. In fact, Brenner has been at the top of the lineup in all 55 contests, while Redeker has batted third 44 times. Matt Honchel has appeared in every game, coming off the bench twice, while Kevin Bower played (and started) in 52 contests. Saturday was one of the three games he missed as he was excused from the team to attend his sister s wedding.. 2012 Miami Baseball 3

On to Close Starting the season without a true closer, Miami found one in senior Matt Rosinki during the mid-season stretch. The senior from University Heights, Ohio, had nine saves during the year, tied for third-most in a single RedHawk season. Rosinski, who ranks second at Miami in career appearances with 102, stands eighth with 11 career saves. No-Comeback Kids Miami has been very strong when getting an early lead this season, but completely unsuccess in coming from behind. The RedHawks are 22-1 ahead after six innings (28-4 when including ties), but 0-23 when behind. When leading after eight innings, Miami is 28-1, but 0-26 when tied or behind. MIAMI REDHAWKS BASEBALL GAME NOTES Sticking to Nine Miami played just one extra-inning game this season and, in fact, just one extra inning. The RedHawks defeated Morehead State 6-5 in 10 innings on March 17 on a walk-off hit by freshman Jacob Wolf. Preseason Picks For the second straight season, Miami was tabbed second in the Mid- American Conference East Division in the annual preseason coaches poll. The RedHawks received 48 points behind defending regular-season and tournament champion Kent State. Central Michigan was the favorite to win the West Division. The league coaches also chose a potential tournament champion with the RedHawks receiving one vote. 2012 MAC Baseball Preseason Poll MAC East Division 1. Kent State - 59 points 2.
