Newsletter June 2016 Page 2 Welcome to our June Newsletter. Racing & Cruising. We had some beautiful sailing weather last month and the cruiser racing series is well underway. The minor mechanical problem with the launch has now been repaired and a number of volunteers have now undertaken familiarisation training on the vessel. We now need to find a way forward to offer a taxi service at weekends and to support organised events when the tides are suitable and the boat is not required for Race Committee Boat duties. The ideal solution would be a rota. The Cruising section is struggling to get off the ground, although there has been one successful day out when several went for a day sail together. Can we please ask that if you are interested in taking part in weekday saunters or weekend rallies, you e-mail Malcolm Rumsey with your preference and boat details? Once we have a decent amount of interest, we will hold a meeting to better organise something within the interested group. There will be a weekend rally to the Folly on the weekend of 16 / 17 July. I will soon be away on holiday, but as I am organising this event I would like names of those wishing to attend by 9 th July at the latest. I will put details on the notice board in the foyer. A list of authorised launch operators and their contact details will soon be available to view on the member s only section of the website under the mooring and pound menu. The updated tractor drive list will also be added. Polite Request Please do not park and leave your car in the roadways in the boat park if you are away from the club premises or sailing. Vehicles left unattended in roadways have caused problems when trying to move boats to launch. Please park alongside the creek by the lawn or next to the club house if you are going away. This keeps the car park clear for deliveries, boat or material movements. Many thanks for your cooperation.
Newsletter June 2016 Page 3 The Tuesday Club What is it? A group of volunteer members who meet at the Club on a Tuesday. The aim is to complete tasks that are required to keep the Club facilities in good condition. Some competency in DIY is preferred but not essential. Recent tasks completed by the team include the refurbishing of the wet room and installation of the coffee station, redecoration of the male changing room and installation of an electrical supply to the top of the slipway. There are many and varied tasks which need doing so if you have a Tuesday to spare why not come along at about 10am and get involved in the self-help ethos of the Club. Later this summer we will be receiving two new pontoon skeletons which will need fitting out. This will complete the refurbishment programme for pontoons all having been replace in the last 4 years. We will also need help with clearing out the white store, tidying the boat park and work to reduce the flooding problem. Lots to do and volunteers needed to help. However it is not all hard work and it is a very happy team. Make new friends and get involved. The Tuesday Club is an equal opportunities group. Waste disposal. Once again we have been subject to bureaucracy with something I was not aware we should have. The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulation 2003 affects the waste management planning of all marinas, sailing clubs and groups of a similar nature. These regulations make port waste management planning a legal requirement and I have to submit a Port Waste Management Plan setting out how we deal with waste and rubbish bought ashore from members or visitors yachts returning after being away. We are also required to enforce the plan, explain where waste facilities exist and review the plan annually. For the benefit of our members the following worded bye-law will be added which encompasses all our waste disposal requirements. 20. Waste Disposal. To comply with the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulation 2003 and the Club s own waste management policy, The Club gives notice that no facilities exist for members or visitors to dispose of any waste or rubbish bought ashore from any vessel, bought in by any vehicle or produced on site. All such waste shall be taken away for disposal either at the person s home address or to the local authority amenity site at Marchwood. Failure to comply with this bye-law may result in the person being required to appear before the General Committee to explain their actions.
Newsletter June 2016 Page 4 Sea Safety In my messages last month I reiterated that Sailing is a sport with an element of risk. I suggested that when travelling in your tender to your boat you not only wear a life jacket or buoyancy aide but carry a waterproof VHF radio which can be used to call for help if you end up in the water. Unfortunately, I received a report where this advice was not taken which could have resulted in a very serious incident. So I am repeating my message with an extra emphasis. Before setting out you must prepare yourself properly by undertaking your own risk assessment having regard to your own strength and abilities and that of the weather and your equipment. If you are properly prepared and have an emergency you should then be able to cope or call for assistance if necessary. By doing this you are reducing the risk to yourself and to other people who may have to come to your aid. So if you haven t considered the risks may I suggest some action you should consider? This list is not exhaustive. Invest in a waterproof portable VHF radio. Channel 16 is the emergency channel. The harbour master at VTS can be contacted on Channel 12. Do you have a set of oars or paddles in your dinghy in case your outboard fails? Are you fit enough to climb on board your boat from the water especially in wet clothing with an inflated life jacket. Consider modifications to your boat to make this easier. Do you know when your life jacket was last serviced and how to use it? Is it self-inflating or manual. If self-inflating has the activation bobbin (the yellow one) been changed within the last two years. Have you told someone you are going out on the water and what time you expect to return? There is a lot advice to be gained from Club members, the Internet, the RYA and RNLI. Please make sure you are suitably prepared. The sea is an unforgiving environment even if it looks placid. Special General Meeting The SGM held on the 18 th May saw a relatively low turnout but the amendments to the rules proposed by the Committee were all approved. A question and answer session followed. A copy of the new rules has been circulated to members. The main Rule change was to help resolve difficulties in recruiting members to fill Committee positions especially Flag Officer roles when vacancies occur. Some of the current committee will be standing down at the AGM in December. If you are interested in joining the Committee please come and speak to me and we can discuss what is involved. Newsletter June 2016 Page 5 Push The Boat Out May 21st Saturday 21 st May and the forecast wasn t great. Rain and southerly winds for much of the day would we have many punters wanting to Push The Boat Out today? However, we HSC members were ready for whatever the day would hold and by 10am the gates were manned, the kettles hot, registration forms ready, and the participating cruiser owners preparing their boats for visitors. On the pontoon was a Wayfarer ready for the off, soon joined by Katie (Tim and Karen Bell), Sandpiper (Roger and Sue Hayward), Blue Bar (Ted Trim and Ann Honour, and Jan s Express (Chris Cooper). The first visitors were keen to try out cruiser sailing, so they boarded the cruisers, each of which went out at least once. Of these twelve visitors who tried out the cruisers, two had some previous experience and seemed keen to join, possibly to crew for others. One young family (a mother and her two very small children) were keen to get involved with sailing, joined Chris on Jan s Express, and seemed very happy judging from the smiles on their faces on their return!
Newsletter June 2016 Page 6 Others came and had a look around and a Mum and daughter had a ride on a rib with Edwin (after a sail on Katie) and came back a little wet, but again with smiles on their faces. One visitor joined Ieuan in the Wayfarer with his parents, then joined in with the Hythe Flyers refresher session later. The Flyers looked good on the water, so a promising start to the season for them. The Flyers had a good training session and sail on the day of Push the Boat Out, which showed off their training skills and what fun there was to be had at the Club. Many thanks to all the helpers. By 2pm the rain had set in, but by then 22 visitors had come and gone after finding out what HSC has to offer and what it s like out on the water, so we are hopeful that some of them will be returning at some point. Certainly several of the adult visitors expressed an interest in sail training, so we had very positive feedback for the day. Additionally, although perhaps not strictly part of 'Push the Boat Out', some Club members who helped also found themselves chatting to other members and being offered other crewing opportunities. This included a cruiser sailor who incautiously promised to crew on Sunday s cruiser race and a 'cruiser - owner' who tried out a Wayfarer. Finally, a big thank you to all who helped, including the behind the scene people who made the club a joy to behold with an almost manicured lawn, and who stood patiently welcoming folk at the gate while getting wet. We will ask for RYA branded umbrellas next year! HSC Push the Boat Out day was part of the national initiative, backed by the RYA, designed to encourage more people onto the water and give sailing a try.
Newsletter June 2016 Page 7 Rear Commodore Sailing Year Book 2017 Tide tables for 2017 are now available, and I have now produced a draft spread-sheet for adding next year s sailing events. Yes folks, planning for next year, has to start now! Eian Massey has already put in the dinghy race dates. If any other members would like to have an input for either dinghy or cruiser events, can they please let me know and we can have a chat about it. Dinghy Racing The dinghy spring series is now complete, with Dave and Christine Witcher putting in a strong performance to clinch the series. One race had to be cancelled because there was not enough wind. The average number of boats competing was only four, although a total of 13 different boats raced we just need to get more boats out for every race. The last race in the spring season had light winds. Pete Browning made a good start, but was caught by a hole in the wind on the second leg. Chris Jones kept inshore, then was able to pass Pete on the second leg. Uwe also passed Pete on the second leg. Wind continued to drop, so the race had to be cut short after just one lap (most boats started a second lap, but the wind died ). Chris was delighted to learn he has now won his first dinghy race. The dinghy evening series and summer series have now started. The first summer race had to be cancelled due to not enough wind and the first evening race had to be cancelled because there was too much wind However fingers crossed for the next race (Summer 2/Normandy). This is always a fun race, so I am hoping to see plenty of boats. We had six boats out for the second evening series race. The wind started as a nice south westerly 3 to 4, and Rob Trim decided on a square course around the moorings, incorporating tide gauge. With an offshore wind, the start was a bit slow, with patchy wind, however there were some good gusts, and the Laser Stratos and 4000 were able to hoist their large asymmetric head sails, and use them for most of the first three legs. Steve, sailing solo in his Hobie 16, left everyone miles behind, and lapped a couple of boats. Unfortunately for Steve, the wind died on his fourth lap, and he struggled to cross the finish line. Dave and Christine made it across the line, ahead of the Hobie and Pete in his Laser 4000, and took first place.
Newsletter June 2016 Page 8 Listed below are the forthcoming dinghy events Cruiser Racing Cruiser racing has started as well as the SWSA evening races; numbers are a little down but are picking up, as usual it depends on time of day and day of the week. The Spring Series is close, with one race having to be cancelled. It s all down to the last race (which happens to be the Normandy Race) between five racers. The SWSA races have been well attended by our Club and poorly attended by other Clubs. We may have to consider not bothering with the SWSA cruiser events next year and concentrate on our own. However, if other Clubs wish to join in with our racing, I m sure the Club could come to some agreement on terms for racing and rallies. The ISC Round the Island race in on Sat 2 nd July; I expect some of our members will be taking part! The Club Launch is now back in action, with a new thumb-screw bung on the gear box and the Launch is now back in normal service. Listed below are the forthcoming cruiser events.
Newsletter June 2016 Page 9 HSC Regatta 23 rd 24 th JULY The annual Clubs regatta will be the next big event at the club and we all hope that as many of you will take part as possible. This year, we hope to run a cruiser vs dinghy pursuit race on the Saturday, then a dinghy race (using Club Pico s) on the Sunday with tender races and the usual fun & games. Please contact any member of the General Committee if you can help with the following: Flyers/dinghy members to rig/launch/sail/recover and de-rig pico s; Safety boat duties; Rubber/rigid tender races; Jousting off the jetty; Possible - RIB Rides; Tug of War; Usual cake stalls etc. Cooking at the BBQ; Erect the Marque; RNLI stall; RYA possible check on Life Jackets Boat Jumbles I don t know if any of you managed to get to either Beaulieu or Solent Boat Jumbles or both. I managed both and found them very useful. I certainly saved a fortune on buying second hand rather than new!! Newsletter June 2016 Page 10 Cruiser Rallies and saunters by Malcom Rumsey We have had two saunters with light winds and a good sail. Those who turned up had a good time. If you would like to take part in more of the saunters, please let me know and perhaps help me organise a few. CRUISER WEEKDAY SAUNTERS IN LOCAL WATERS PROGRAMME FOR 2016 This has been drawn up to suit those who are fairly new to their boats or to sailing and who just want to get used to our local waters. There will always be experienced club members on these saunters who will be happy to take other members as crew. Any members of the club will be welcome, both new and existing members. The proposal was for days out, but some of the above could be extended to overnight stopovers if this was a popular option. The additional dates will be done on a monthly basis.
