INSPIRED BY SNOWDONIA Saturday, June 13, BBC Two Wales, 10pm #RealNorthWales For over 200 years, artists have been drawn to the landscape of Snowdonia in search of inspiration. Its scenery offers everything a painter could wish for - majestic peaks, crags, lakes, and glens - an unspoilt wilderness that demands to be placed on canvas. Inspired by Snowdonia examines how artists relationships with the landscape of north-west Wales has changed over the years. Richard Wilson, JMW Turner, Kyffin Williams and contemporary painters Elfyn Lewis and Alison Bradley are just some of the artists whose work is featured in the programme. Art writer and historian Mari Griffith introduces us to the paintings and visits Cwm Idwal, Llyn Nantlle and Betws y Coed - just some of the locations that have inspired the artists of yesterday and today to take on the challenge of picturing Snowdonia. Inspired by Snowdonia is part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales. Gwawr Jones 3

AMERICAN INTERIOR Saturday, June 13, BBC Two Wales, 10.30pm #RealNorthWales Welsh cult musician Gruff Rhys documents his latest musical road trip, retracing the fantastical American journey of his 18th Century relative, the explorer John Evans. In search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales for America in 1792 with only $1.75 in his pocket. Alone and without a horse, he walked into the wilderness of the Great Plains of the Wild West and reappeared seven years later as Don Juan Evans. American Interior is an investigative concert tour. Fiction, fact, fantasy, myth and music documentary collide as Rhys flies like an eagle and howls like a wolf while following in the footsteps of his (extremely) Great uncle. American Interior is being shown as part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales. Melfyn Clwyd Roberts 4

CAROL VORDERMAN: THE FLYING ENGINEER Sunday, June 14, BBC One Wales, 5.35pm #RealNorthWales Carol Vorderman has a Cambridge degree in engineering and recently qualified as a pilot. She grew up in Prestatyn and Denbigh and, in Carol Vorderman: The Flying Engineer she flies in to her home patch in north-east Wales to join the top team of engineers at Broughton. They re building the wings that are helping to make flights quieter, greener and smoother. The Airbus factory is celebrating its 75th anniversary and, over the years, has survived massive changes. From the Wellington Bombers of World War Two to the world s largest passenger airliner - all have been made in Wales. Carol finds out more about the contribution made by the Broughton plant, including a chat with Betty Weaver from Wrexham. She s 94 and is one of the women who built the Wellington Bombers during the war, including one plane in a record-breaking 24 hours and 48 minutes. Today s production techniques are also revolutionary and Carol rolls up her sleeves to help build the latest carbon fibre wings, and uncovers how Broughton ensures this part of Wales punches above its weight in the competitive world of aviation. Carol Vorderman: The Flying Engineer is part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales. Melfyn Clwyd Roberts 5

FLINT DES RES Sunday, June 14, BBC One Wales, 10.30pm #RealNorthWales Flint Des Res offers a unique insight into the real world of Flint Council s Housing Department. With over 7,500 properties and a waiting list of over 3,000, the pressure is on to find homes for those in desperate need. The programme introduces a core group of housing officers who take pride in their jobs - part social worker, part anti-social behaviour officer and part benefits adviser. No two days are the same for the team. Rent arrears and anti-social behaviour force the council to evict around 30 tenants a year, and it s the housing officers job to sort out any issues when the homes have been neglected. The first programme tells the tale of Leigh, a homeless BAFTA-nominated set designer who ended up living in his car after not being able to find work. He s now at the top of the housing priority list, has ongoing medical issues and is in desperate need of a new home. Flint Des Res is part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales. WELSH HEARTLAND: THE LLŶN PENINSULA Monday, June 15, BBC One Wales, 7.30pm #RealNorthWales Summertime crowds gather in their hundreds around a famous pub on the beach at Porthdinllaen. Landlord Stuart Webley feels the heat as he calls for extra help in Welsh Heartland: The Llŷn Peninsula. An Australian couple search for their roots on Bardsey Island but will their accommodation be ready in time for their arrival? Visitors are making the most of their holidays in Abersoch and one couple in particular have their Welsh dream come true as they finally settle in Llanaelhaearn and treasure their new home. How will they settle in to their new Welsh way of life? Claire Russell Griffths is hoping to fulfil her Welsh dream at upper Abersoch, Mynytho, but finding a job to safeguard her family s future in Llŷn is proving difficult. Will she be able to make a living on Pen Llŷn or contemplate travelling further afield, in order to pursue a career? Welsh Heartland: The Llŷn Peninsula is part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales. Sarah Davies 7

THE FARMER AND THE FOOD CHAIN Monday, June 15, BBC One Wales, 8.30pm #RealNorthWales Gareth Wyn Jones continues on his mission to change the way Welsh people buy food - and in the final episode of The Farmer and the Food Chain he s turning his attention to the Welsh Government. Every year Welsh schools, hospitals and other public bodies spend over 70 million on food but Gareth thinks more should be done to buy local and help Welsh farmers and food producers. He visits a school in Ely, Cardiff and sets out to see if it s possible to feed the children with quality, locally-sourced food. But Gareth s got his work cut out - will he be able to provide a full menu and stick to some strict guidelines? On a school trip he accompanies kids to a local organic farm, where they can get hands-on with the animals. Is it true that children have no idea where their food comes from? Gareth also gets a response from the Welsh Government - but it isn t what he was expecting. The Farmer and the Food Chain is part of the Real North Wales season from BBC Wales.
