WORLD RECORD CRAPPIE CAUGHT IN LOUDON COUNTY For the second time in less than a two-year period Tennessee has produced a wildlife world record. A 5 pound, 7.68 ounces black crappie was caught in a pond in Philadelphia, Tenn., by Lionel "Jam" Ferguson, which eclipsed the world record 5-pound black crappie caught on a private lake in Missouri in 2006, according to the International Game Fish Association. WATTS BAR LAKE The previous black crappie record in Tennessee was 4 pounds, 4 ounces caught in 1985 in Brown s Creek Lake in Henderson. Ferguson's record fish came about 19 months after Stephen Tucker killed the world record white tail deer in Gallatin with 47-point antlers which measured 312 3/8 inches. 4 CORNERS MARKET Intersection of Hwys 58 & 68, Decatur, TN * Gotzza Pizza - Subs - Salad - Wings (Delicious & Best @ Prices) Call In or Carry Out * Hunting & Fishing Licenses * Live Bait & Fishing Supplies * Cigarettes - Beer - Groceries * 100% Ethanol-Free Gas (grades 87 & 93) OPEN 7 DAYS - Big Game Checking Station 423-334-9518 Prayers go up and blessings come down. Ferguson said. Philadelphia is located in Loudon County near Knoxville. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officer Anthony Chitwood met with Ferguson after Ferguson caught the black crappie and accompanied him to a nearby boat ramp to have the fish weighed on scales used in bass tournaments. * Groceries * Deli - Take-Out * Pizza * 100% Gas - no ethanol * Live Bait * Worms * Beer * Ice * Lottery * Propane * Minnows After realizing the fish might be a world record it was then taken to be weighed on certified scales. The following day TWRA fisheries biologist John Hammonds visually inspected the fish and verified it as a black crappie. In order to rule out the chance of it being a hybrid between a black and white crappie, Hammonds took a fin clipping that is undergoing DNA testing, which will take a few weeks. Ferguson already has delivered the fish to a taxidermist for mounting. (Reprinted from article in www.tennessean.com by Mike Organ, USA TODAY NETWORK - Tennessee Published May 18, 2018.) HIWASSEE / OCOEE RIVERS Airbows with Bolts, Airguns with Pellets, Will Be Legal in 2018 for Specific Hunts NASHVILLE --- For the first time, Tennessee sportsmen who possess a permanent disability license obtained from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, can utilize a pneumatic device known most commonly by its trademark name, Airbow. Similar to a crossbow in that this device shoots a bolt (small arrow), the Tennessee Fish And Wildlife Commission, the governing body of TWRA, approved the use of the Airbow during its recent May meeting in Nashville. Commissioners were voting to give qualified permanent disabled hunters another means of enjoying the outdoors, noted Lt. Col. Cape Taylor of the TWRA Law Enforcement Division. They are the only ones who can use this device during archery-only big game hunts. The Airbow, however, can be used by any hunter during modern gun seasons in Tennessee, explained Taylor. This does not include the muzzleloader season for deer, specified the lieutenant colonel. There were no changes made to this upcoming fall muzzleloader season. Hunters who believe they qualify for a permanent disability license can visit the agency s website at www.tnwildlife.org. The hunting season dates will be set by the TFWC at its May 17-18 meeting. The winner will be re- (Con t on p. 23 TFWC Establishes Two-Year Hunting Seasons at May Meeting NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission established the state s 2018-19 and 2019-20 hunting and trapping seasons at its May meeting which concluded Friday afternoon The TFWC serves as the governing body of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The commission s actions, which include season dates, bag limits, and rules and regulations, go into effect July 1. It marks the first time that the regulations will be effective for two years rather than one year. Among changes made was the addition of a three-day, archery-only antlered deer hunt Aug. 24-26 in 2018. The commission had been requested to consider the season so that hunters can have an opportunity to harvest deer while they still have velvet covered antlers. In addition, the 13-member body approved an agency recommendation to return to a previous definition of what constitutes an antlered deer. For the last two deer seasons, any deer with antlers above its hairline was considered an antlered deer. Now, antlered deer are defined as male of female deer with antlers that are minimum of three inches in length. Hunters had indicated to TWRA that they preferred the 3-inch rule and that was one of the several reasons why the agency proposed returning to the traditional definition. The agency will publish its Tennessee Hunting & Trapping Guides prior to the beginning of seasons, which will include the changes made in hunting or trapping seasons, but also all season dates and bag limits. The guide will be available in hard copy, but also on the agency's website. It will also list the various changes and regulations that will apply to a specific wildlife management area (WMA). Among the various changes on WMAs, deer seasons were restructured on Cheatham WMA. On Wolf River WMA, deer hunting opportunities were expanded. The TFWC voted to eliminate the special private lands only raccoon/opossum hunting season in selected East Tennessee counties as requested by public input. The statewide season opens in mid- September. With concerns for a recent dip in the wild turkey harvest, the TFWC also voted to limit the fall turkey 20 (Con t on p. 21

The spring turkey season will remain the same as it has been in recent years, allowing a four bearded bird bag limit. While it will not become law until July 1, 2019, the commission, noting concerns over the potential of Chronic Wasting Disease finding its way into Tennessee, voted to ban the use of cervid lures Horse Creek Dock & Resort with urine. There is concern nationwide that the 703 Horse Creek Dock Road, Celina, TN 38551 disease could be passed through tainted urine. 931-243-2125 Synthetic deer and elk lures, readily available on the market, would still be legal. John Mayer, Region III manager, will be retiring at the end of June after 34 years of service to the agency. He was recognized prior to the start of Thursday s committee meeting.
