HOLIDAY PARTY The Holiday Party is scheduled for Dec. 10 at the Fox & Hounds Restaurant, Deerfield. Save the date and more details will follow. Cincinnati Chapter ASGA Monthly Meeting October 15, 2008 The meeting was called to order by President Ron Craig. Split-the-Pot: A pot of $51.00 was won by Diane Kerley. In addition to Split-the- Pot, we drew for two coupons for halfhour lessons at Golf Galaxy. These were won by Tim Maybury and Dawn Mason. Membership: Membership Co-chair Darlene Inwood reported there were 21 members present, and 1 guest. Ron Craig began by discussing the election and announced that the task of electing our next chapter President was at hand. Stu McCulloch was then elected our new President by acclamation. Other elected officers will be voted on at next month s meeting. Golf: Golf Chair Diane Kerley announced that 24 individuals, including 2 from the Indy chapter had signed up for our season finale at Perry Park. Social: Pat Dixon announced the following upcoming events: Lebanon's annual horse-drawn carriage parade happens on Saturday, December 6. Those interested should meet in front of the municipal building at 5:00 p.m. and bring a lightweight folding chair. Afterwards, we will meet at either the Black Horse restaurant or the Golden Lamb. There are several live theater performances coming up at the Covedale Theater and the Stained Glass Theater in Covington which might be of interest to members, e.g. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and The Seven Year Itch. We will probably stage a reprise our Super Bowl party on February 1, at the King's Island clubhouse. OTHER BUSINESS 2009 Golf Show: Marsha reported on the annual Hart Productions golf show to be held at the Duke Energy Center from January 16 through January 18. There will be little cost to the chapter for establishing a booth at the show as the ASGA picks up 87% of the cost. Members who staff the booth will have to be in uniform, however, i.e. wear an ASGA logo shirt. Booth personnel will receive a discount on the admission fee. Holiday Party: Marsha also mentioned the date had been set for the holiday party. It will be held at Fox and Hounds, the same venue as last year, on December 10 th. We will not repeat the Rob Your Neighbor gift exchange at this year's party because it took up too much time. It was the consensus of the group that our money might better go to a charitable cause, to wit. Adopt-a-Family: We will once again provide Christmas gifts for a needy family of nine in Butler County. Please mail your check to Pat Ressler or bring to the next mingle. The chapter will also make a donation from the treasury. Perry Park Finale Recap Our Grand Finale was held at Perry Park on Oct 18th & 19th. Perry Park is always great. This little golf resort is off the beaten path and makes you feel like you are a million miles away from home. We had 25 people participate, 6 foursomes each day. As always, we had too much fun!!! The weather was nippy in the mornings but warmed up to a beautiful fall weekend. Saturday we did a warm-up with no team game. We played a mix of 6 holes scramble, 6 holes alternate shot and 6 holes best ball. In each foursome the competition was between the two people in each cart. Low total score won for each 6 holes. It was some thing a little different and fun. On Saturday we had winners of the contests as follows: For the men Jim Wingate took two prizes for Men's long drive and Men's closest to the Pin. Larry Elkins won Men's long putt. For the women we had winners: Long drive was won by Linda Utterberg; Closest to Pin was won by Andy Mason; Longest Putt was split between Jane Olson and Pat Dixon who, oddly enough, made the same length putts. Saturday night after dinner we all congregated in the party room and played Left Right Center. The night's big winner was Lucy Toth. Sunday morning we played a best ball team event. Everyone was bundled up due to a frosty morning but the fog lifted and it became a gorgeous fall day perfect for golf. The team event winners with a best ball score of 73 was Ron Craig, Rebecca Chase, Hallie Higgins and Joann Greenway. We also had Most Bogies as a competition for men and women. Winners were Stu McCulloch with 12 and Jane Olson with 11. Our contests were won by the following: Ladies Longest Drive - Lucy Toth, Ladies Closest to Pin - Dawn Mason and Ladies Longest Putt - Dori Comer Men's Longest Drive - Tim Maybury, Men's Longest Putt - Ron Green Men's Closest to Pin was a bust because none of the men hit the green on #5 Buckskin. Sorry guys! This golf season has come to a grand finale with a great weekend at Perry Park. For those of you who didn't get a chance to experience this great weekend, come join the fun next year. You don't know what you are missing! Thanks to everyone who participated. He popped up beside one unfortunate man who was participating in a club competition. "Look," he said, "if you agree never to court a woman, flirt with a girl or marry, I' l l help you win." "Done," shouted the young golfer. The leperechaun was very pleased and chuckled merrily. When the golfer was in the clubhouse being praised by the other members, the leprechaun popped up on the shelf of the locker. "Hey," said the little elf, "I have to have your name for my records. What is it?" "Father Murphy," grinned the golfer as he adjusted his Roman collar. November Golf Tip There are multiple variations of wedge shots available to the player and these can range from three quarters shots, leading edge shots, trailing edge shots, knockdown shots, and a shot that is prevalent on the PGA Tour - the flatfooted wedge. Let's talk about the differences between the shots. First the three-quarter shot. I firmly believe and teach that wedge swings should never go back any farther than three-quarters of the way. Wedges have the most offset and the most loft of any club in the bag and this makes them the easiest club in the bag to pull. So by taking the club back three-quarters of the way it is much easier to control the distance and direction. A leading edge wedge shot is just that, the player is striking the ball with the leading edge of the golf club and delofting the shot. This produces a lower trajectory and higher spin rate. The trailing edge shot is just the opposite. Think of a bunker shot, we normally use the trailing edge of a golf club because we're trying to add loft and we don't want the club to dig into the sand. This produces a higher trajectory and less spin. You can also think of this shot as a lob shot. A knockdown shot produces an even lower trajectory then a leading-edge shot and usually takes one hop and stops. And finally, the flat-footed wedge. You see a lot of players on TV use this shot. They make a three-quarter length backswing, then swing down through the ball while finishing fairly low with their feet staying flat. So this is primarily an upper body stroke that makes it easier control distance and direction. Remember, wedges are NOT for distance but rather for accuracy. So the next time you have a 90-yard shot into the green don't try to muscle a lob or sand wedge. Instead make a three-quarter swing and use a gap or pitching wedge to control your distance and accuracy.
