Clarington, Ontario (Courtice/Bowmanville) Formal Bid to Host the Canadian Powerlifting Union 2020 Central Canadian Powerlifting and Bench Press Championship La compétition Dynamophilie Submitted By: Sandro D Angelo (Ottawa Strong) Art Chan (Ottawa Strong), Barry Antoniow (Invictus Powerlifting) With Support of: Ontario Powerlifting Association Executive Sport Durham, Economic Development and Tourism Division, Regional Municipality of Durham To be Presented at the 2019 CPU Annual General Meeting

HOLDING THE COMPETITION IN CLARINGTON, ONT. Invictus Powerlifting and Ottawa Strong are teamed up again to bid to host the 2020 CPU Central Canadian Championships in Clarington, Ontario. Our bid committee team of Art Chan, Sandro D Angelo and Barry Antoniow have over a decade of experience planning memorable, high profile events. Some of our past successful competitions include: Sandro D Angelo and Art Chan have now hosted 12 powerlifting meets in the Ottawa area. The first powerlifting meet was the 2010 Annual Ottawa Open powerlifting meet. They have since hosted this meet annually along with four Ontario Powerlifting Association ( OPA ) Powerlifting Provincial Championships (2012, 2013, 2015, 2017) with the most recent being the November 2017 OPA Classic Open / Master Provincial Championships. Barry Antoniow started hosting powerlifting competitions in 2007 in Ottawa. Since then he has host 16 competitions in Ottawa, Vernon BC, Calgary AB and Clarington, Ontario. The 4 local comps have been 2-day comps. The most recent the 2017 OPA Provincial Championship was 225 lifters over 4 days. Host Community Profile We are submitting this bid to host the 2020 Central Canadian Powerlifting Championships because we consider this to be an incredible opportunity for the Region. Not only will an event of this scale bring positive economic impact to Clarington and enable us to showcase our state-of-the-art facilities and attractions, but we believe it will be a great source of community pride and will result in increased partnerships, connections and collaboration. City Quebec City Montreal Sherbrooke St. Catharines Belle River Hamilton London Guelph Toronto Ottawa North Bay Sudbury Sault Ste. Marie Distance to Bowmanville 730 km 476 km 625 km 171km 385km 128km 253km 152km 61km 395km 305km 442km 732km

Our unique mix of urban and rural truly set us apart. Once here, visitors are impressed with the rich history, culture and beautiful landscape of Durham Region, along with the variety of accessible attractions and restaurants, indoor and outdoor activities, local food and award-winning craft breweries, there is something for everyone. Considered one of the safest Regions in Ontario, we boast one of the lowest crimes rates in Ontario. The 401 Hwy of Heroes comes directly to Clarington and, for those wanting to bypass Toronto, the 407 now has a new connector directly to Clarington. The venue and accommodations are in the town of Bowmanville, in the municipality of Clarington and Clarington is a part of the Region of Durham (East of Toronto). Currently all levels of governance are in support of the event being held in Approx. 300 lifters participated in 2018 Centrals, with a majority from Ontario. We predict that there will be an even a higher Ontario presence in 2020. With that said, a central location is paramount in serving the CPU Athletes competing. As always, National level referees are difficult to recruit. With the central location, 15 of the 16 Ontario National level referees are located within 4 hours driving distance. This central location will save lifters and officials hotel room costs as they can drive the day of competition. Economic Impact John Mutton, former Mayor of Clarington, President and CEO of Municipal Solutions Inc., has offered to donate his firms resources to this event if granted. They will conduct an audited economic impact report, based on general indicators established by the Canadian Sport Tourism Commission. The results would be shared with the CPU to be distributed to Provincial Associations and Meet Directors looking for grant support of local municipalities. This could be a very valuable document and resource for the CPU in the future as the sport and competitions grow.

Athlete Experience The goals for the Centrals is to have athletes gain experience at a National level competition and to creating lasting memories in powerlifting by bringing the experience to life for the athletes from the meet shirts, sponsors, medals, awards to a quality venue, competition stage and a world class warm up room. By always keeping the athlete s best interests at the forefront. The collective mission between all the meet directors is one word quality. The bid committee has the support of the Regional and Municipal Tourism Organizations. Sport Durham will be providing a financial contribution to help athlete experience at the event. During the competition weekend, including providing information on things to do and see in the area, as well as arranging event photography, promoting the event to spectators to help elevate the profile of the sport in the community, and more. The Organizing Team of Ottawa Strong and Invictus Powerlifting, bring a strong history of running quality events. Combining the resources of both clubs will have some special features that we feel are important to athletes competing and to running a great event. 4 competitions have been run out of this venue, each one run flawless. A dedicated music DJ and Announcer, with separate Audio systems Loaded Bar Collective will be the official event Media / Photographers IF GRANTED THE 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP: We plan on working with the CPU to develop unique Championship Medals. The event committee wants to put in time and finances to create a medal that you wear to dinner after the podium! Top Quality Event t-shirt and design! An athlete wants to return home from a competition and wear the shirt to help promote and show off his or her accomplishments. The committee hired Mack Marketing LLC to develop the 2017 OPA Provincial s logo with the intent on making a logo and shirt you would be proud to wear around town as well as the gym. If granted the 2020, we will raise the bar and outdo the 2017 OPA Provincials logo. Partner with local tourism organizations to provide information on things for visitors to see and do and places to eat between competitions, including discounts at restaurants and attractions.

Event Logistics Equipment 4 ER racks / 4 platforms in the warm up area and one ER Rack on the main platform 2 projector screens in the competition area so ALL refs, platform crew and spectators can see the scoresheet clearly. 2 Monitor in the back warm up area for the scoreboard and live video of the platform. Over 1800 Kgs Rogue, Titex, Ivanko and Eleiko Plates Rogue, Titex, Ivanko and Eleiko Bars DLR Wireless ref lights and Back up hard-wired light systems Stage platform, Truss back drop and lighting system Financial Support and Legacy Plan As well as giving back to the athletes, we would like to show our support to the Powerlifting Organization and include the following in the proposed bid: o 1 complementary Hotel room for the referees (3 nights, 2 beds); value: $600 o Sanctioning and Financial support to the CPU of $500.00 o Event Legacy Plan: The DRL light system with a truss and backdrop will bring the level of quality to the next level An evening sessions on Friday and Saturday nights will elevate the profile of Powerlifting in the Durham Region by providing access to evening showcase sessions. Event Team and Volunteers The 3 clubs supporting the event we will take safety (spotting/loading) very seriously, as everyone knows that they are an integral link in a positive and efficient delivery of the event. Fresh loaders keep the event on time and at the 2017 OPA Provincials there was only one misload in 4 days and ZERO injuries. This includes the spotters catching an 800lb opening squat from Kelly Branton. At the same Provincial weekend, there was only one-time delay of 5 minutes over the 4day event. The platform managing is second to none. All 3 meet directors are referees. The host bid committee appoint Barry Antoniow, as the National Referee, to be the Technical Secretary who will do the paperwork (including flights, scoresheets, etc.)

Risk Management St. John s Ambulance will be on location during the entire event to endure immediate medical care if needed. As well dedicated security will be located at the entrance of the warm up area to ensure the safety of all athletes and their belongings. There is also a Firehall across the parking lot with an active crew. The platform crew are all experienced lifters, spotters and loaders. Structure and Proposed Dates With the growth of Centrals, the Bid Committee feels that a 4-day event will be able to stick to a schedule better and flow better. The following date is available for the Championship: - September 17-20, 2020 The Fall is a great time of the year as it does not conflict with summer vacations. Early fall in Clarington is still warm and driving conditions are fantastic. The venue will hold these dates until after the AGM, at which time a deposit will be required to secure the venue.
