That challenge comes in the form of No. 10 ranked Florida State, a team off to a 3-0 start with seven letterwinnners back from last year s 26-8 team. ACC Coach of the Year Sue Semrau has a team with a strong post presence in 6-foot-5 Jacinta Monroe, one of 25 players in the country on the Wade Trophy list for potential player of the year. Sophomore 6-foot-4 center Cierra Bravard adds more quality to the inside game. This short series is tied 1-1, but this is the first game played at Georgia State. It has been seven years since the last meeting when the Seminoles posted a 73-60 win in Tallahassee on Nov. 23. Georgia State claimed a 96-70 win over Florida State during the Panthers 28-5 season of 1980-81 in a game played over at Georgia Tech in a tournament. A pair of FSU players have roots in Atlanta as senior guard Angel Gray hails from Stone Mountain High and junior guard Christian Hunnicutt played at Landmark Christian. Location... Atlanta, Ga. In the season opener, it was 6-foot-2 Chan Harris that led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds while senior veteran forward Danyiell McKeller fired in 22 points as well to go with her seven rebounds. Another asset for the Panthers is junior college All-America transfer wing Angelique Burtts. The 6-foot wing hit 7-of-11 shots for 15 points, a team-best seven assists and three steals in her debut in the blue and white. A vital cog for Georgia State is sophomore point guard Crystal Johnson. The Gainesville, Fla., native led the CAA in assists last year and ranked No. 20 in the nation with her 5.53 per game average. The All-CAA rookie had eight points, four assists and four steals in the opening win. Senior guard Brittany Graham notched her career 100th threepoint basket last weekend after leading the team with 40 last year in her first season at Georgia State. Senior 6-foot-2 forward Shay Rawls has been the Panthers Chairman of the Boards with her 549 career rebounds, including 246 off the offensive glass. Georgia State begins its fifth season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), a league that has placed three or more team in postseason tournaments for four straight years as well as multiple NCAA bids the past three years. The league has finished within 8-12 among the 32 Division I conferences the past four years. Two of the top three scorers in the NCAA last year return to the CAA and with three CAA players on the 50-person Naismith Watch List, a third consecutive WNBA first-round pick from the league is possible. After this game, State hosts a holiday tournament next weekend (Nov. 27-28) with Murray State, Troy and Morgan State.

Georgia State Basketball Notes - Page 3 GEORGIA STATE VS. RANKED TEAMS No. 10 Florida State isn t the highest-ranked team to visit the Sports Arena as Georgia was ranked No. 4 on Dec. 28, 2000 when they played here. The Dawgs were ranked No. 8 when they came back on Nov. 27, 2002. The most recent Top-20 team to play here was CAA foe Old Dominion, who was ranked No. 19 on Jan. 6, 2008. Florida State is currently No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 13 in the AP poll. Over the past decade alone, Georgia State has seemingly played a team ranked at many high spots in the rankings. The Panthers drew No. 1 Duke in the NCAA tournament in 2003, faced No. 3 North Carolina just two years ago in 2007 in Chapel Hill and fought the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels in 2004 in Myrtle Beach. State faced No. 6 Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and No. 6 Louisiana Tech in the NCAA in 2001. State drew No. 7 Minnesota in a 2003 tournament at Virginia. Georgia State has beaten a Top 20-ranked team in the Sports Arena when the Panthers shocked Coach Andy Landers Georgia Bulldogs in overtime during the 1981-82 season. Last year s best wins were over a pair of teams in the top 100 in Old Dominion and Clemson. GEORGIA STATE VS. ACC TEAMS Georgia State, whose women s basketball program was founded 35 years ago in 1975-76, has a ledger that included 18 wins over Atlantic Coast Conference teams in that span. Of those 18 wins over ACC teams, 11 have come over city rival Georgia Tech, with two each over North Carolina and Clemson, as well as one each over Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest. The most recent ACC win came on Nov. 22 last year when the Panthers toppled Clemson, 82-75, at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson. Danyiell McKeller led the way that day with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Brittany Graham chipped in 17 points with five three-point baskets. All seven returning letterwinners for State played in that win. Following Florida State, the Panthers will host Georgia Tech on Dec. 22 here at the Sports Arena. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH HENRY This will be the fourth time in Coach Lea Henry s career at Georgia State that she has coached a game on her Nov. 22 birthday. The previous three times she worked on her birthday were all good presents. Last year, it was the win at Clemson, 82-75. Previously it was a 2002 win over Florida International, 72-67, and a 1997 win over Brewton-Parker, 98-46. FOUR RECRUITS SIGNED IN FALL PERIOD Coach Lea Henry and staff got four recruits signed to National Letter of Intents during the fall signing period. Three come from junior college and one from high school. The early class includes JaQuavia Couch, 5-6 guard from Saginaw, Mich (Daytona State College); Leteicia Davenport, 6-0 forward from Gainesville, Ga. (North Hall High and Sante Fe CC); Briana Shepherd, 6-0 forward from Birmingham, Ala. (Erwin High); and Tracie Sneed, a 6-0 wing from Jacksonville, Fla. (Andrew Jackson High and Sante Fe CC).

The full-court challenging Panthers forced an average 22.7 turnovers per game, including 20 or more in a game 23 times. They had 12 steals in Saturday s win over Kennesaw. The top returning bandits from last year s team are the sophomore guards, Jylisa Williams with 71 steals and Crystal Johnson with 61 thefts. Williams tied the school record for a game with nine. Post player Chan Harris used her wide wing span to come away with 37 more steals in the full-court traps. The Panthers 354 steals last year were 17 shy of the 1980-81 team s alltime best of 371 steals in a season. SHARING The Ball Passing is another integral part of Coach Henry s plans as last year s team was No. 2 in the CAA in assists and No. 74 in the nation. State had 241 assists, an average of 14 per game. Pass first, dribble second, encourages getting the ball to the open teammate. Point guard Crystal Johnson led the CAA with 166 assists (5.53) and ranked No. 20 in the NCAA. Fellow All-CAA freshman guard Jylisa Wiliams made 61 assists to give the backcourt a combined 227 passes that led directly to the baskets. Baking The BIRTHDAY Cakes A trio of Panther basketball family celebrate their birthdays in November. Guard Traci Haltiwanger celebrates on Nov. 9, followed four days later by Brittany Graham on the 13th. Head Coach Lea Henry blows out her candles on Nov. 22 (the day of last year s win over Clemson). THANKSGIVING Treat Georgia State will host a Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 27-28 with 20-win Murray State, Troy and Morgan State coming to town. The Panthers and Racers of Murray State, a 20-win team last year in the OVC, begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with Troy and Morgan facing off in the 4 p.m. game. On Saturday, the consolation game is at 2 and the championship game at 4 p.m. 35th YEAR of Basketball This marks Georgia State s 35th season of women s basketball in the NCAA with the first season being in 1975-76. The team has earned three NCAA bids and one WNIT bid.
