edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Phone: 901.722.0293 www.memphisredbirds.com @memphisredbirds Memphis Redbirds (84-47) at Iowa Cubs (64-65) Friday, August 25 7:08 p.m. (CT) Principal Park (11,000) Des Moines, Iowa Game #132 Road Game #65 (40-24) RH Dakota Hudson (0-0, 4.00) vs. RH Williams Perez (6-8, 4.91) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The division-champion Memphis Redbirds look to snap a stretch of six losses in their last nine games with game two of a four-game series at Iowa. The Redbirds have lost back-to-back games for the second time during this stretch, after only losing back-to-back games once since June 28. The Redbirds are 38-16 in their last 54 games, and with two more road victories would eclipse the 2000 team s 41 road wins for the most in a season in franchise history. With three more wins overall, the Redbirds can tie the 1974 Memphis Blues (AAA Expos, 87-55) on the list of all-time winningest professional baseball teams in Memphis. Memphis 84-47 record is the best in Triple-A Baseball (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 81-49) with the 84 wins one shy of Double-A Trenton (85-44) for the most in all of Minor League Baseball. Today s game will be broadcast live on 1210 AM/103.1 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Dakota Hudson starts for the sixth time this season looking for his first win, after cruising through 3.1 shutout innings in his last start against New Orleans Sunday before being removed after a 1:47 rain delay. Today s start will be Hudson s third on the road, where he has a 6.30 ERA (7er/10.0ip) in the first two, compared to a 2.65 ERA (5er/17.0ip) in three home starts. Combining his time with Memphis and Double-A Springfield, Hudson s 2.81 ERA ranks fifth among full-season clubs in the St. Louis Cardinals organization this season. Williams Perez is scheduled to make the start for Iowa, which will be his third against the Redbirds this season. He lost backto-back starts against Memphis May 7 and May 29, sandwiched around a trip to the Disabled List, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in 7.0 innings (10.29 ERA). Perez had not faced the Redbirds BIRD BITES prior to those May starts, after spending the previous six seasons of his career in the Atlanta Braves organization. SCHEDULE WITH IOWA: The Redbirds and Cubs renew acquaintances for eight-straight games to conclude the season series after not meeting since May 30. Memphis snagged the first series in Des Moines earlier this season by winning the first three games as part of a franchisebest 11-game winning streak. The Redbirds lead the alltime series 155-134 but are 63-79 in games played in Iowa. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 2011, Victor Marte set a Redbirds single-season record by recording his 27th save. Marte went on to post 31 saves on the year. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Iowa had four extra-base hits in the decisive fifth inning, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead, and held on to defeat the Redbirds in the series opener. The Redbirds led 1-0 after Tyler O Neill singled home Alex Mejia in the top of the fourth. But the Cubs hit two doubles and two triples in a four-run fifth inning and then led 5-1 after the sixth. Memphis plated a pair of runs in the eighth to make the score 5-3, but the final four Redbirds in the game struck out, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth before the side went down on strikes in the ninth to end the game. O Neill and Mejia each finished with two hits for the Redbirds. Matt Pearce took the loss despite a solid first four innings of work. - The Redbirds have the best record through 131 games in franchise history (77-54, 2000) - Memphis has its largest division lead in franchise history (previous before this season: 15.0 games, Aug. 13, 2000) - Memphis is one of four teams in MiLB with 83+ wins (Trenton Thunder [AA], 85-44; West Michigan Whitecaps [A], 83-43; Chattanooga Lookouts [AA], 83-46) - The Redbirds currently lead the PCL American Southern Division by 21.0 games, and since divisions were established in the PCL in 1963, only two teams have won their division by 20 or more games (1970 Spokane Indians, 26.0 games; 1981 Albuquerque Dukes, 25.0 games) - Memphis currently has its best ERA in franchise history (3.70) (3.89, 1998 and 2003), its best fielding percentage (.984) (.984, 2014) and its third-best batting average (.277) (.284, 1999;.279, 2004) 84 AND COUNTING: The 2017 Redbirds became the winningest club in the franchise s 20 seasons with their 84th win on Aug. 21 against New Orleans. The previous record was 83 wins, set by the 2000 team. At the time the record was set, 17 different Redbirds had also played for St. Louis this season, including six making their Major League debuts. CHAMPIONS!: With a 12-7 win at Nashville Aug. 13, the Redbirds clinched the PCL American Southern Division title, with 21 games to play in the regular season. The playoff trip is Memphis fifth in franchise history, alongside 2000, 2009, 2010, and 2014. The Redbirds went on to win the PCL Championship in both 2000 and 2009. IT S NOT JUST ERA: Memphis pitching staff leads the PCL in ERA (3.70), which would be a franchise record (3.89, 1998 and 2003), and Memphis is the only club in the PCL with a team ERA under 4.20. The Redbirds had a league-leading 3.16 ERA in June and a 3.08 ERA in July, which also led the league. The Redbirds are allowing 4.0 runs per game and have issued the fewest walks (339, 2.6 BB/9) and given up the second-fewest hits (1113, 8.5 per game) in the league. Additionally, Memphis pitchers sit second in the league in strikeouts (1066, 8.2 K/9). MEMPHIS MASHERS: Memphis increased its season home run total to 151 with two Tuesday, which is the third-most in the PCL this season. Memphis hit 107 all of last season and 97 in 2015. The Redbirds have hit 79 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in The Bluff City all of last year and 49 in 2015. The club record for home runs in a season is 174 (2004). STARTING OUT QUICK, FINISHING STRONG: The Redbirds have scored 106 runs in the first inning and 76 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition 182-85 in the game s first two frames. Additionally, the club has outscored opponents 58-32 in the ninth inning and 14-1 in extras this season. Memphis has scored first in 85 of its 131 games, which is the most in the PCL. PROCEED WITH CAUTION: The Redbirds are 78-for- 123 (.634) in steal tries this year but have rounded into form recently. After starting the year 18-for-42 (.429), Memphis is 60 for its last 81 attempts (.741). IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for-24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 21 for their last 47 (.447). Overall, pinch-hitters are 26-for-71 (.366) on the season. Twelve different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Rangel Ravelo s five knocks. GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds have excelled in extra-inning games this season, posting a perfect 10-0 record in such contests while being the only team in the PCL undefeated in extra frames. The 10 wins are the most in the circuit. The Birds have outscored the opposition 14-1 in extras this year. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals full-season minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories: - AVG: Valera (1st,.324) - HR: Wisdom (1st, 29), Bader (2nd, 20) - RBI: Wisdom (1st, 84), Martini (3rd, 63) - Wins: Flaherty (1st, 13), Pearce (t-2, 12) - ERA: Flaherty (1st, 2.13), Hudson (5th, 2.81) - Strikeouts: Flaherty (1st, 144) RED-HOT JULY: The Redbirds set a franchise record for wins in a single month by going 22-6 in July, bettering a 21-9 Aug. 1998 and topping the previous best July, which was a 20-9 mark in 2014. The Redbirds hit.283 as a team in the month and led the PCL with a 3.08 July ERA, and Memphis accomplished the feat with eight key players having seen action with St. Louis. STREAKS GALORE: Part of Memphis success this season has been due to long winning streaks. The Redbirds won a franchise-record 11-straight games April 28-May 8, bettering nine-straight wins during the 2000 and 2014 seasons, and then had streaks of seven-straight and nine-straight in July. The Birds also won 12-straight home games from July 3-27 and seven-straight road games from May 2-8. The Redbirds also won or split 27-straight series from April 18-21 at Colorado Springs through Aug. 15-18 versus Nashville (17-0-10). MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES GREAT EIGHTEEN: Ryan Sherriff became the 18th different Redbird to also appear on the big league club s roster this year on Aug. 23. Of the 18 players, 10 (Brebbia, DeJong, Grichuk, Kelly, Martinez, Pham, Piscotty, Sherriff, Tuivailala, Weaver) still remain with the Cardinals as of today. Seven of the 18 (Bader, Brebbia, DeJong, Lucas, Mejia, Sherriff, Voit) made their Major League debuts this year. CAREER-BEST BOMBS: Patrick Wisdom (29) leads the Redbirds in home runs this season, with his total eclipsing his last two seasons combined, and Harrison Bader has hit 20, bettering 2016 for his career best. Carson Kelly hit 10 before being going to St. Louis, which bested his rookie season of 2012 (9) for his career high. VERY GOOD, VALERA: Breyvic Valera has hit in 34 of his last 39 starts (.392, 62-158) and 41 of his last 51 (.380, 76-200). After an 8-for-48 skid (.167) over 16 games dropped his average from.292 to.259, he is back at.324 after the last 55 games overall. TWO (OR THREE) OLIVES: Nick Martini has hit safely in 32 of his last 46 starts. After suffering through a 2-for-24 skid from June 7-16, Martini has reached base safely in 47 of the last 54 games. Despite joining the Redbirds one month into the season, Martini is tied for second on the team with 32 multi-hit games. FULL MONTY: Mark Montgomery leads league relievers in lowest opponent batting average (.186) and fewest baserunners/9ip (8.76) and is third in fewest BB/9ip (1.84). He has allowed runs in only 12 of his 43 outings, and has posted a declining ERA in each month this season (2.92, 2.45, 2.03, 1.35). A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: All-Star Ryan Sherriff was been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 48 games, tied for the fourth-most in the league, before his promotion to St. Louis. Despite the heavy workload, the southpaw was second among league relievers in lowest opponent batting average (.207) and fewest baserunners/9ip (9.06) before moving up. Ten of the 19 earned runs Sherriff allowed this year came in three of his outings. Aside from that, Sherriff had a 1.62 ERA (9er/50.0ip). LUCAS LOCKS IT DOWN: Josh Lucas is fourth in the PCL in saves (14) and leads the league in fewest walks/9ip (1.27). He also has eight wins in relief this season. In the last three seasons, Lucas has saved 39-of-48 chances. MIDSEASON HONOREES: Carson Kelly and Ryan Sherriff represented the Redbirds at the Triple-A All- Star Game in Tacoma, with Luke Weaver selected but unable to play due to a promotion to St. Louis. Kelly started at catcher and singled, and Sherriff had a key strikeout in the ninth to help the PCL win. In addition, Jack Flaherty participated in the MLB Futures Game during All-Star festivities in Miami. Flaherty allowed two runs in the sixth inning but added a strikeout. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, five of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Harrison Bader (#7), Dakota Hudson (#9), Jack Flaherty (#11), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29). Mariners No. 2 prospect Tyler O Neill joined the Redbirds after a trade in mid-july. CHICKS DIG DEJONG BALL: By hitting 13 home runs in 48 games for the Redbirds and 20 in 74 games so far for St. Louis, Paul DeJong joins Rick Ankiel (2007) as the only players to hit 10-plus home runs for both Memphis and St. Louis in the same season (32 MEM, 11 STL).
