Golf Canada Membership P a g e 2 Head Pro s Corner Investing I N S I D E T H I S In Our Game I S S U E Head Pro s Corner Hi Everyone! Well its been a busy few months with events at the Club, thank you to everyone who came out and took part as there were good times had by all Golf Canada s valued members We Started everything off the our inaugural Blue Devil 666 Team Member Events & Ladies Tuesday Group 3 Just Ask Slade 4 On Course Delivery 5 Tournament which threw 3 different formats at all the teams across the 18 holes. The 6 Scramble holes were the easiest giving the teams a chance to get under par, followed by the 6 best ball holes and then finally the killer 6 ALTERNATE SHOT which claimed more than a few teams!!!!!!!!!! Our very own Power Couple Rob & Sheri Tourigny bested the field of 100 to take the title in challenging conditions, CON- GRATULATIONS guys!!!!!! Turf News 6 Event Highlights 7 Wedding & Event Booking 8 Next up was our MAJOR!!!!! The Blue Devil Club Championship, this year our crop of players might have been the best in our 6 years playing the event. Garry had the golf course in perfect condition and the greens were as smooth as glass and maybe even faster!!!! The Men s Championship came down to the 17 th hole with our final group all tied up, with a birdie, birdie finish Lucas Bristow won the title for the first time with a gutsy finish. In The Ladies Division Sheri Tourigny hoisted another Trophy to complete the 2 nd leg of the Blue Devil Triple Crown with her victory. Finally our Overall Low Net Championship was decided in a tiebreak with Pam Freckleton winning over April Hanson who both played 3 great rounds. 1 st Flight Champion Pete Vettori eked out a win in a tie break over Ray Drobot and 2 nd Flight Champion Dave Bissett ran away from the field with a personal best 79 in round two to take the victory. Thank you to everyone who come out and participated over the weekend, there were a lot of laughs and some great golf but most importantly a lot of fun. This Past Friday we Hosted our first SOLD OUT Lil Devil Hole in One Shootout!!!!! The name of the game was hole in ones or pick your balls up and off to the next tee. The night was about good friends, a lot of laughs and of course a few beverages. Unfortunately we didn t get any hole in ones but we had two really close calls with 2 golfers hitting the flag stick and coming to rest only a few inches from the hole. Blake Clayton

We play the 18 holes of the Blue Devil. Don t let that intimidate you. Some of us only play the first 9 holes, and we almost all play from the red tees which are very forgiving. We each keep our own score, or don t keep score at all. The better golfers among us are often willing to give a few tips to those of us just taking up the game. Each week we gather about 15 minutes before our first tee time and determine our groups for the day. The tee times are emailed to the group each week and members contact the clubhouse to register their intent to come. If you would like to be added to the contact list for this group, please contact Beth Olver at 403 254 6008 or text 403 542 9657 or email at soundsofmusic@shaw.ca

P a g e 4 Just Ask Slade Time has been flying by this summer and we are moving into fall already. We have had a lot going on around the club and we have a few more fun events to come. We have a little construction happening on our doorstep which you have all been aware of. We have had some questions so I wanted to communicate what we know so far and what we can expect to come next. The development to the south, Wolf Willow, is a very large development with high-density condos, townhomes, single family homes, a school, and commercial businesses. The access to this development is 194th Ave where the community needs to twin 194th all the way down to the fish creek parking lot at the end of the road. Unfortunately, we have no control over the schedule, order, or speed of the construction as it is done by the developer to city of Calgary standards. During this time we are promised unimpeded access to the course, so if there is ever an issue please let us know ASAP. They are moving very quickly and I know they are highly motivated to complete construction before the snow flies. When completed we can expect the same standard as the top of 194th with four lanes and a landscaped meridian. There has also been some activity directly west of our driveway on the 44 acres field. The same developers as the Wolf Willow are looking at the feasibility of developing that parcel as well. The property would have to go through rezoning as well as being built up above flood plain levels They have started the rezoning process by reaching out to affected neighbors included ourselves. They have presented a basic idea of what might be included in the development which would be some high density as well as single family homes. We are awaiting to see the initial proposal for the layout of the property. The developers have assured us they will be respectful of the neighboring homes as well as setbacks to our driveway. We will see how the process proceeds. Slade King

P a g e 6 T u r f R e v i e w B y G a r r y H a y n e s Here it is already August 16 th already half way through the 2018 golfing season. We are coming to the time where students will be going back to school and we will be running our core staff until the end of the year. The fairways are about 90% recovered from the winter snow mould damage and will hopefully be 100% healed by the end of September. We have one more granular fertilizer application on roughs, tees, and greens surrounds hopefully going down within the next two weeks. The fairways have two more liquid applications to go, one late august and one late September. We have finished 14 greenside bunker with the Billy Bunker system and another load of sand should be delivered this week to finish off 2 fairway. 14 greenside 2 fairway We have one more bunker on 18 to apply this system and that will be it for the year. This Billy Bunker system will allow full drainage in bunkers and the sand will not pack like the others. The reason our bunkers are so firm is that with the amount of washouts that happens throughout the summer over the past 8 years, the silt from the ground contaminates the sand not allowing water to penetrate through the profile. And because we have to continue watering with heat the bunkers stay wet. We do what we can by deep tining these bunkers but it only seems to last a couple days then they firm up again. We plan on going through all the green side bunkers with the Billy Bunker system but this is a long and timely process to get done. The bunkers are the biggest part of our labor here at Blue Devil and this system will help tremendously to cut down on the time we spend in our bunkers and focus on other parts of the golf course. We are also looking very intensely on ways to control our geese population. These geese are a nuisance and within a 15 min gap of golf there are dropping all over the greens again as we clean off all green first thing in the morning. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me. Garry Haynes Garry@BlueDevilGolf.com

P a g e 7 We ve been having a great summer with lots of new ladies events and we had a great turn out for our 2nd Annual Junior Open on Lil Devil. What other events would you like to see at the club? ~Andrea
