EXHIBITION GAME: WEST GEORGIA at GEORGIA STATE Wednesday, Nov. 3 7 p.m. GSU Sports Arena Atlanta, Ga. 2009-10 RECORDS Georgia State, 15-15, 6-12 CAA H: 9-7, A: 6-7, N: 0-1 West Georgia: 9-17, 2-7 GSC H: 6-8, A: 3-9 HEAD COACH Sharon Baldwin-Tener (Georgia, 91) At GSU: 0-0 Career: 195-142 (12th year) GEORGIA STATE ON THE AIR Radio: WRAS-FM (88.5) Drew Hinesley: Play-by-Play Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen: Color Live statistics at GeorgiaStateSports.com Tickets: 1-866-GA-STATE ($5 tickets) Students free with valid Panther ID card PANTHERS PLAY ONLY EXHIBITION GAME Georgia State s new head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener will put her team on the home court for the first time with their lone exhibition game against the NCAA Division II West Georgia Wolves of the Gulf South Conference. The Panthers return six letterwinners and will blend in two JUCO transfers and four freshmen from last year s 15-15 squad. Injuries will play a factor in the exhibition opener as the team gets its first chance to employ some of the things the new coaching staff has installed. The University of West Georgia, in nearby Carrollton, is also under a new head coach with veteran Scott Gronger taking the helm of a 9-17 squad in 2009-10. The Wolves of the Gulf South Conference had guard Thomassian Wyatt picked to the GSC preseason team. The 5-8 senior nailed 31 three-point baskets last year. West Georgia, with half its roster from metro Atlanta, will travel on to play Ole Miss in an exhibition gamethursday night. Georgia State s top returning scorers are 6-foot-2 junior forward Chan Harris (11.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and 6-foot senior Angelique Burtts (10.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg). The Panthers look to get even more from six-foot-three sophomore center Cody Paulk, who started three games last year, while blocking 21 shots in just 193 minutes of playing time. Point guard Lanajia Ernest and forward Letiecia Davenport were both all-conference JUCO players last year as they make the transition to Division I. The four freshman include Atlanta native Kendra Long, who signed with Georgia Tech last November, but eventually signed with GSU this summer. Simply put, I believe in playing aggressively, whether on offense or defense. We will play with passion and hunger. Our staff will emphasize the fundamentals and how to prepare each and every day to get better. We want the ball to get up the floor as quickly as possible. We will work hard on the defensive end to get steals and rebounds in order to be able to take advantage of our team speed and score before the defense gets set up. I learned from Coach (Andy) Landers that working hard is extremely important. By that, I mean everyone always thinks they are working hard. I thought that in high school and then at Kennesaw, but when I got to his program, I learned I really could work a lot harder than I was. The players can always do more than they are doing, whether they realize that or not. What we are trying to do now is raise the level and the quality of play every single day. My transition has been pretty smooth at Georgia State and I give the players a lot of credit. They have really bought into what we explained and they understand now what we are trying to do and what we expect of them. I am glad the NCAA moved back the start of practice to Oct. 4 and I think we have put that to good use with the combination of practice time and days off to give the players a chance to recover mentally and physically. - Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener

Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener Sharon Baldwin-Tener continues her ascent as a rising star and a proven winner. On April 16, she was named the ninth head coach in GSU history by Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick. In eight years, Baldwin-Tener turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in 2007. It is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta. In 2009-10, her 23-11 ECU team was No. 37 in the NCAA in scoring, while ranking No. 12 in three-point FG percentage, No. 14 in overall FG percentage, No. 19 in assists and No. 42 in rebound margin among the 345 Division I colleges and universities. Those eight years at ECU followed her 2001-02 season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No.1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). The Panthers will start the regular season with Georgia Tech on Friday, Nov. 12, in the 34th meeting in this downtown series. Tech leads 22-11 and holds a 10-6 series advantage on the home court at Alexander Coliseum. GSU then heads south to Florida for a two-game swing against former A-Sun rival Stetson on Sunday, Nov. 21 in DeLand and then on over to Daytona Beach for a Tuesday, Nov. 23 game at Bethune-Cookman. The official home opener and debut game for Coach Baldwin-Tener will be the Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 27, and Sunday, Nov. 28. Georgia State plays host to Alabama A&M at 2 p.m. on that Saturday with Rice University playing Mercer in the second game. The consolation and championship game will follow on Sunday afternoon. So, after Wednesday, it will be 24 days before GSU will have a home game here in the Sports Arena. December will be more friendly as the Panthers will play three home games and then the Holiday Tournament between Christmas and New Year s. NEW STAFF HELPS GET PANTHERS READY In addition to new head coach Baldwin-Tener, GSU has a veteran staff of assistant coaches to help mold the team. Adrienne Shuler has 17 years of college coaching experience, including a six-year stint as the head coach at Appalachian State (2002-08). Shuler joined Baldwin-Tener for the past two seasons at East Carolina, helping last year s team to 23 wins and the WNIT bid. Shuler had also been the associate head coach at Furman and on that staff from 1995-2002. She played her college ball at the University of Georgia. Jocelyn Wyatt also comes from two years with Baldwin-Tener on the East Carolina staff. Wyatt served two years as a GA at Georgia prior to that. She played college ball at Appalachian State under Shuler and her high school ball in metro Atlanta at Berkmar. Jonathon J.B. Shuler returns for his second year at GSU and has 14 years experience on women s college basketball staffs. He is an Atlanta native and athlete at Rockdale County High School. PANTHERS ROSTER MAKE-UP The 12 active players include two seniors (Burtts and Haltiwanger), three juniors (Davenport, Ernest, Harris), three sophomores (Anderson, Paulk, Taylor) and four freshmen (Jordan, Long, Shepherd, Smith). The two redshirts are both juniors who will have two years left when they start playing next year (Hargraves and Means). Six of the 12 active players come from Georgia (Anderson, Burtts, Davenport, Harris, Long and Taylor). Two Panthers hail from Alabama (Paulk and Shepherd). Ernest comes from California. Jordan hails from North Carolina and Haltiwanger from South Carolina. Victoria Smith comes from the land down under, in Sydney, Australia. CAA TO BE TOUGH AGAIN The CAA had seven teams earn postseason bids last year and will likely be among the top 10 conferences again. Two of the three All-Americans return, who were both top five scorers in the NCAA. Three teams are Top 25 in the preseason Mid-Major poll among the 22 conferences considered in that category.

James Madison will be the defending tournament champion after last year s win as the No. 2 seed. In 2009-10, Drexel claimed the championship after entering as the No. 1 seed from the regular season. In 2008-09, Old Dominion earned the championship as the No. 1 regular season seed. For Old Dominion, that marked a run of 17 consecutive years of winning the championship. Prior to ODU s run that started in 1992, Richmond had won a pair, James Madison had won four and East Carolina had won the first two CAA Championships ever played. The tournament site moves around and this year it will be held at a new venue for the CAA: The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., just outside Washington D.C. This will mark the first time the tournament has been held at a neutral site since 1998 when it was held at the Richmond Coliseum.
