Director s Report Jason Wyse 440-740-4792 WyseJ@bbhcsd.org Looking ahead, please remember to mark your calendars: ***OMEA LARGE-GROUP ADJUDICATION MARCH 13th-14th*** Reminder: This is a mandatory event, and students should avoid scheduling work, SAT/ACT, etc. for these days. Students will attend their scheduled performance on ONE of these days (not both). However, we do not receive a schedule until two weeks prior to the event, therefore both days should be left free of prior commitments. Adjudication is a unique and valuable musical opportunity for all students, and the success of each ensemble is dependent upon full participation. BAND AUDITIONS for 2015-2016 - - Audition materials released - Friday, January 30th - AUDITIONS DUE (via the Online Submission Form) - FRIDAY, FEB. 13th - Please Note: Auditions are earlier this year, to allow them to be completed prior to the guidance department generating schedules. This will allow for more accurate schedules, and fewer problems in the fall! Following audition results, students will be placed into Symphonic Band, Concert Winds, or Wind Ensemble, and should sign up for the appropriate course when scheduling. Seniors will complete the audition as a graded performance assessment. - JAZZ ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS will be released on January 23rd, and DUE February 6th. Citrus Sales Many thanks to Kathy Drinko, Lynn Robie, Kathy Richards, and our many student & parent volunteers for their outstanding efforts during our fall/winter Citrus Sales! Holiday Concert Congratulations to all students on a fine concert! We were extremely proud of each ensemble, and we look forward to continuing our progress in preparation for our Mid-Winter concert on March 5th, as well as the OMEA Adjudication on March 13-14. During this rehearsal series, we will be making arrangements to bring in a few special guests to work with our band students! Welcome to Mr. Liam Sleggs! While Mrs. Astey is enjoying maternity leave with her new little girl, Lyla Anne, we are joined by her very capable long-term substitute Mr. Sleggs. Mr. Sleggs brings a strong skill set, and a strong passion for working with students, and we are delighted to have him aboard for the next three months! OMEA Solo and Ensemble Saturday, January 17th Congratulations to all students who participated in this valuable musical event! Your investment in preparation, and the feedback that you received, will serve to make you a stronger musician! YSU Wind Ensemble @ BBHHS Thursday, February 5th We are honored to host the Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble on 2/5, as they prepare for their performance at the OMEA State Convention! This outstanding ensemble will visit BBHHS that morning, work with our Wind Ensemble, and then present a Noon concert to all of our band students (parents are also welcome). Hearing a collegiate ensemble, especially one of this caliber, is always a valuable opportunity for our music students! Ticket to Broadway February 20th and 21st These performances features Music In Motion and Commotion, with the Jazz Ensemble serving as the opening act! Please come to support these fine students and enjoy the results of their hard work (all proceeds benefit Vocal Music Boosters). Lakeland Jazz Festival Friday, February 20th The Jazz Ensemble will perform for a panel of three adjudicators, who will provide written and verbal feedback, and conduct a 30-minute clinic. In addition, they will be able to hear other area jazz ensembles. It s another great opportunity for our students! Thank you for the opportunity to share music with your children. We appreciate your support, and look forward to continued musical collaboration in 2015! Sincerely, Jason Wyse Happy New Year! We hope that you enjoyed a festive and peaceful winter break. We are excited to be back, working on some new & exciting new music with the students!

Letter From the Band President Linda Begley 440-526-0682 begleyband@cox.net Welcome to Winter! I hope that everyone had a relaxing break with a joyful, restful, holiday season. he BBHHS bands provided a memorable end to 2014. The holiday concert was filled with wonderful music showcasing all our talented students! It was such a great show. The weekend after the concert brought wonderful news for our band family. Congratulations go out to Mrs. Astey and her family with the birth of daughter, Lyla Anne! A little bit of Florida Sunshine was brought to our winter days with the Citrus Sale. I want to thank all who participated this year. A big thank you to our Citrus Chairs, Kathy Drinko and Lynn Robie. They worked diligently to run a successful sale. A big thank you to all who volunteered the days of citrus delivery to ensure the fruit was delivered quickly. Also, thank you to all who sold and purchased citrus! What a flavorful way to support the students and the band. Looking ahead to February, please consider attending the Vocal Music Boosters event, Ticket to Broadway on February 20 or 21. Many of our talented band students participate in Commotion, the band that accompanies the show choir. Also, many of our band members sing! It is fun to see all the talent these students have. March will bring the Orchestra s Electrify Your Strings event which will feature the middle school and high school orchestras presenting an electrifying rock orchestra concert! Many of our band students also participate in orchestra. This event will be held on Saturday, March 7th. Please visit the BBHHS orchestra website for more details. March will also bring the first annual Music In Our Schools Pancake Breakfast. This event is a joint fundraising event with Vocal Music Booster, Orchestra Boosters, and Band Boosters. It will be held on Saturday, March 21 from 8-1. There will be performances, raffles, photo booth, and of course pancakes! BBHHS Band is a busy, exciting organization to become more involved in. Soon, committee chair positions and officer roles will need to be filled. Please consider becoming more involved in all the fun and friendship. If you are interested in a position, please let any of the officers know. It really is a wonderful way to spend some time while helping the band. Please join us at the next band booster meeting on Tuesday, February 3 at 7 PM in the band room. I look forward to seeing everyone there! Lyla Anne Astey was welcomed into the world on Saturday, December 20th at 9:38AM. She was 20 ½ inches long and weighed in at 7lbs. 5oz. Mrs. Astey, Lyla and the rest of the family are doing well. Jacob and Luke are very proud big brothers! Lyla looks forward to meeting the BBHHS Band Family soon and Mrs. Astey sends her well wishes for a great start to the 2nd semester!

Hello BBH Band Families! My name is Liam Sleggs and as some of you may know from talking to your students I am the interim band director for Mrs. Astey while she is out on maternity leave. A little about me I am a native of Buffalo, NY and made the move to Ohio in 2010 to attend college. I recently graduated from Baldwin Wallace University with a degree in Music Education. After my graduation I co-directed one of the bands at the Baldwin Wallace Summer Band Camp. In addition to that position at Baldwin Wallace I am also the Assistant Conductor of the Conservatory Outreach Wind Ensembles. This past fall I was the Assistant Marching Band Director of the Brunswick High School Marching Blue Devils as well as the interim band director at Nordonia City Schools. If you would like to know more about me please visit liamsleggs.com. The past few days have been remarkable, and have confirmed how lucky I am to have the opportunity to instruct your students, and take them on a musical journey over the next three months. Sincerely, Liam A. Sleggs A Student's Perspective by Eli Shively Many BBHHS students regard the span of 2-3 weeks that falls in between the end of Winter Break and the start of midterm exams as the worst part of the school year. Right after getting back from a relaxing holiday, we suddenly find ourselves right back in the thick of things, with some of the biggest tests of the year looming over our heads. Thankfully, though, for band students, the excitement of a new concert prepare for, as well as OMEA Solo & Ensemble contests provide us with a few things to look forward to in the midst of all this academic doom and gloom. An air of change and progress envelops the band room as we begin to study and sight-read new music, pick out and practice our pieces for contest and, this year in particular, welcome Mr. Sleggs, Mrs. Astey s long-term substitute. Mr. Sleggs brings both experience and talent to the table as the director of both the Symphonic Crimson and Concert Winds ensembles, and his presence around the music wing has been welcomed with open arms by students and staff alike. All in all, 2015 is already looking like a great year for the band program here at BBHHS. Personally, I may only have a few short months left in my band career, but I think I speak for every band student in saying that I m eager to make every last moment of the 2014-2015 school year count. Please join us at the next Band Booster meeting on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7pm in the Band Room
