T H O R O U G H B R E D R A C I N G STEWARDS REPORT MEETING HELD AT ASCOT ON SATURDAY, 8 JANUARY 2011 Meeting No: 130 Weather: Fine Track: Good (3) Penetrometer: 6.2 Rail: Inside Position Stewards: B.W. Lewis, D.A. Hensler, D.J. Mead, C.D. Brown, P. O Reilly (FL), Cadet M.L. Vickers (Clerk of Scales), T. Rendell (BA), G. Croll (BR) Veterinary Surgeons: Drs. J. Forbes, T. Mather Medical Officer: Dr. J. Cooney RACE 1: WESTSPEED 2YO PLATE - 1000M FIGHTERS SECOND (Jason Brown) Inconvenienced near the 600m and again passing the 550m and having to be restrained and taken outwards. SMALL AND SPICY (Patrick Carbery) Slow to begin. DUAL CITY (Alan Kennedy) Over-raced in the early stages. Trainer Mr Lindsey Smith advised that following the race the filly was found to be shin sore and would now be sent for a spell. Trainer was advised that under LR.64(c) the filly would not be permitted to start in a race for a period of six weeks. MISS SAFARI (Peter Knuckey) Raced wide on straightening and lay inwards over the final 100m. NINGALOO BLITZ (Shaun Mc Gruddy) When questioned regarding the unplaced performance, rider advised that in his opinion the filly would be better suited to racing over an increased distance. Trainer Mr D. Morton agreed with the comments of the rider and further advised that the filly would be given a let up. MAKE ME BLUSH (Jason Whiting) Bumped and carried outwards near the 600m. MISELLE BLITZ (Damian Lane) Bumped and carried outwards near the 500m. Lay inwards in the straight. VELVET ASSASSIN (Craig Staples) Rider advised that the filly raced in a stop start manner throughout and appeared to baulk in the middle stages. A post race Veterinary examination revealed the filly to have returned with a laceration to the off hock. Trainer Mr P. Jordan advised that an endoscopic examination revealed some abnormalities and it would now undergo a lung wash and he would advise Stewards of the results. WESTERN FEVER (Takahide Ikenushi) - Commenced awkwardly. Restrained from heels near the 600m when tightened and then improved onto the heels of another runner passing the 550m and blundered unbalancing its rider. Returned with a minor laceration to the near fore. General: Stewards inquired into the reason for WESTERN FEVER (T. Ikenushi) being restrained near the 600m and then blundering from the heels of VELVET ASSASSIN (C. Staples) passing the 550m. It was established that VELVET ASSASSIN shifted inwards near the 600m when not fully clear of WESTERN FEVER causing that filly to be tightened and restrained. After this VELVET ASSASSIN, when racing greenly, lost momentum resulting in WESTERN FEVER contacting the heels of that filly and blundering causing its rider to be severely unbalanced. In relation to the incident at the 600m, Jockey C. Staples pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for a period of 13 days to commence from midnight 12 January 2011 and to expire at midnight 25 January 2011. Stewards deemed the reason for WESTERN FEVER blundering from the heels of VELVET ASSASSIN passing the 550m was due to VELVET

Trainer Mr J. Lugg will be contacted regarding the gelding s performance and racing manner. TIME TO CLIMB (Paul Harvey) Baulked from the whip of another rider throwing its head in the air passing the 100m and as a result lost momentum. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider advised that he placed the filly in a rearward position after commencing fairly and other runners had shown more pace to his inside and after responding to his riding in the early stages of the straight it had baulked from the whip of another rider near the 100m and then lost momentum and did not finish the race off. He further advised the filly may be better suited by racing over an increased distance. Trainer Mr T. Andrews will be contacted to discuss the filly s performance and his future intentions. MICKEY DRIPPIN (Peter Knuckey) Scrambled behind at the start. CAREFUL AFFAIR (Colin Haddon) Rider reported that the filly raced greenly throughout. When questioned regarding the performance, Trainer Mr T. Pike advised that the filly raced greenly and overreacted when racing to the inside of other runners in the middle stages and consequently became unbalanced and lost ground when making the corner passing the 600m.
