Annual Report University Games Committee Session 2007-08 In the session 2007-2008, All the clubs of the Games Committee were reactivated and General students were involved in various sports activities. The attendance of students increased manifold in the various clubs. The Games committee has increased facilities for sports persons and is providing proper sports gear and track suits to all members of university teams. The daily allowance for outstation events has also been increased. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Aziz has taken keen interest in the affairs of the Games Committee and his constant and dynamic guidance has been a great source of inspiration for sports persons. The Riding club has purchased four new horses and now has total of eighteen horses. The annual riding show was held on 2 nd March 2008 and was a grand success. Male and female riders showed their skills before a distinguished gathering headed by Vice-Chancellor AMU and other prominent citizens of Aligarh. 1

The Swimming Club has been renovated and painted after a gap of ten years. Proper parking and drainage system has been provided in the swimming pool to safeguard the building at cost of Rs: 2.6 lacs. The stand of the football club has been renovated and seating capacity has been increased. A large no of students play soccer on regular basis. The Athletics ground has been provided with a proper track for first time while the Gymnasium Club has been re-equipped with latest equipments costing of Rs. 1.82 lacs. The renovation work of Cricket Pavilion was completed and the ground was further beautified and other facilities like proper score board and boundary rope were also provided. A second basketball court was renovated and provided with proper standard equipment. Body building and wrestling club were re-activated and competitions were organized after a lapse of several years in these disciplines. The Hockey club was provided with mobile goal post and modern equipments for the players. The Mountaineering and Hiking club organized a 2 days workshop and this was attended by a large no of students and in which the resources person was President of 2

Mountaineering foundation of India. The Vice-Chancellor AMU Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis inaugurated the workshop. The closure of university from September till December 2007 due to law and order problems disrupted the sports schedule and participation and preparation for various Intervarsity tournaments. The university also could not host the North Zone Intervarsity Football Tournament in October due to the above reason. The Games Committee has prepared a comprehensive proposal for XI five year plan for presentation before the U.G.C. Visiting team. There is no Indoor stadium and no post of coach in same sports like Lawn Tennis and Athletics. The U.G.C. will be requested to sanction funds and facilities to over come these deficiencies. The female students were also involved in various activities sports including outstation events and the Games committee provided technical help to the women sports persons whenever asked by the Principal Women s College. The women s team participated in Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball and Athletics Intervarsities. 3

Besides the routine activities, the following is brief account of activities of various clubs. Riding Club 1. The MU Riding team participated in Army and Central Command Equestrian Championship and Magadh Horse show 2007 at Gaya Bihar from 25 th September to 10 th October 2007. One of the team member reached up to the final round of individual sword pegging. 2. The Club organized its 118 th Annual Horse Show EQUESTRIA-2K8 on 2 nd March 2008. In this show, the members of the UP Mounted Police also participated in various events. The Show was a grand success and the members of the riding club (Boys & Girls) showed their skills before a large and distinguished gathering. A number of former captains also attended this show. Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice- Chancellor, AMU was the Chief Guest. 3. The Club has purchased 4 new horses during the last session to take its effective strength to 18 horses. Hiking & Mountaineering Club The following candidates have participated in the advance mountaineering course at West Himalayan Mountaineering Institute of Manali (HP) from 30.08.2006 to 26.09.2007. 1-Mr. Suhil Ahmad Awarded A Grade Recommended for Higher course Rope leader Climbed 17220 feet (Sitidhar Peak) 2- Mr. Alok Kumar Awarded A Grade Recommended for Higher course Consolation prize as best trainee Climbed 17220 feet (Sitidhar Peak) 4

3-Mr. Parves Shafi Makdoomi Awarded A Grade Recommended for Higher course Rope leader Climbed 17220 feet (Sitidhar Peak) 4- Mr. Mohd Hassan Awarded B + Grade Claimed 17220 feet (Sitidhar Peak) Completed the course successfully All the four participants have not only secured the higher grade but also received many compliments for their excellent behavior and discipline. The course consisted of 70 participants from all over India. Only 23 participants secured A Grade including our three members of AMU Mountaineering & Hiking Club. 1. The Club has conducted 16 Km Marathon Race on 06.01.2008, in which 500 students participated and 253 students completed the Marathon. A number of Female student also participated in the marathon. 2. The Club has organized Orientation and Training Course on 12 th & 13 th January 2008 3. The club has conducted Adventure Mountaineering Course at Dehradun/Mussoorie area from 19 to 25 February 2008. Twenty students participated in the course. 4. The club has also conducted another Adventure Mountaineering Course at Bayana (Rajasthan) from 30 March to 03 April 2008. Roller Skating Club 1. University Roller skating team has won the XXX All India Open Roller Skating Championship 2007 (Organized by the Roller Skating Association of Uttarkhand) at Mussoorie on 6 th October 2007, and has won the Championship in both Junior & Senior categories. 2. The club has organized 42 nd Open Annual Roller Skating Championship 2008 from 7 th to 10 th April 2008. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof P.K. Abdul Azis inaugurated the meet. 3. The Skating Club also organized Summer camp for the session 2007-08 4. UP Roller Skating team consisting nine members of AMU and eight members of other schools of Aligarh participated in the National Roller Skating Championship 2008 held at Voda Park Vishakaptnam 5

(AP) organized by the Roller Skating Federation of India from 28 to 31 January 2008 and secured IIIrd Place. Cricket Club 1. Imtiyaz Ahmad member of Cricket selected for Uttar Pradesh Ranji trophy team 2. Imtiyaz Ahmad, member Cricket club selected for Under-22 UP team 3. Danish Ali selected for Under-19 India Railways Cricket team 4. Two players Imtiyaz Ahmad & Mohd Mansoor were selected in Fast bowler camp organized by Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association 5. AMU team won the All India Tournament Idea cup at Moradabad 6. Reached Quarter-Final in the North Zone Intervarsity held at Meerut 7. The Club has organized a Twenty-20 Inter-Faculty Cricket Tournament in the month of March 2008 8. The Club has organized Inter-hall Cricket Tournament in the month of February 2008. 9. The Club also organized Sir Syed Memorial Open District Cricket Tournament in the month of January 2008. Table Tennis 1. Mr. Prerit Sharma, member of Table Tennis Club achieved the following UP State Ranking 1 st Position (Jr. Boy s Category) 2007-08. Selected to represent UP team in Jr. National Table Tennis Championship 2007 at Indore in January 2008. 2. AMU Table Tennis team participated in North Zone Intervarsity tournament held at Kurukshetra in January 2008 and reached the quarterfinals. 3. In the month of February 2008 AMU T. T. Club organized Inter-Hall & Open Table Tennis Single title & NRSC won the team championship. 6

Athletics Club: 1. The Club organized Open Distinct Athletic Meet on 7 th & 8 th December 2007 in which about 800 Male & Female athletes participated in different events. Mr. Bahere Alam member of AMU Athletic Club secured 1 st Place in 100 meters event. Mr. Shashikant member of AMU Athletic Club was awarded Individual Champion in Open District Athletic meet (Men s Category). Ms. Deepika Chaudhary member of this club was declared individual champion in women s category. 2. Mr. Shahbaz Ayub member of this club participated in UP Athletic meet in event 400 meters hurdle and got 3 rd Place. 3. The Club also organized Inter-Hall Annual Athletic Meet on 5 th & 6 th March 2008 in which the team of V. M. Hall was champion in Men s category and the team of S.T. High School won championship in Boys category. 4. The AMU Athletic team has participated in the All India Intervarsity Athletic Club Meet from 10 to 20 January 2008 at Annamalai University (Tamil Nadu) The over all performance of the team was satisfactory. Three girls athlete were also part of the team Lawn Tennis Club 1. Flood lighting of Tennis courts was installed at cost of Rs: 1.38 lacs and now the students can play after sunset also. 2. Tennis is being played regularly throughout the year. 3. The AMU Tennis team participated in the North Zone Intervarsity Tournament organized by Punjab Agriculture University Ludhiana from 24 to 31 October 2007. The performance of team s members was satisfactory and they reached the quarter finals despite not getting opportunity to practice as university was closed sine die at the time of Intervarsity Tournament. 4. The Tennis Club organized Open District Tennis tournament from 16 to 19 December 2007. The matches were played for boy s & men s category in singles & doubles events. Mr. Ashwani Prakash member of Tennis club clinched Mens and Doubles crown and Mr. Mohd Nasir won the title in boy s category. There was also a competition amongst Veterans in double s category in which large numbers of participants from various organizations participated. 7

5. The Club has also organized Inter-hall tournament from 12 th to 14 th March 2008 at Chattari Tennis Pavilion in which the teams from the various hall were invited to participate. The team of V. M. hall was Winner and the team of N.R.S.C. was Runner s up. The club has also organized Veteran Singles events during the Inter-hall tournament. Hockey Club 1. One member of our team Mr. Moti-ur Rehman was selected to represent Indian University hockey team (Combined University) for Nehru Hockey tournament held at New Delhi. 2. The team participated in invitational tournaments held at Etawah & Aligarh. In North Zone Intervarsity Hockey tournament held at PAU Ludhiana on Astro-turf surface, the team won two matches. In the first match AMU defeated Allahabad University 2-1 & in the second match the team defeated Meerut University 1-0. The team lost the third match to Kurukshetra University. 3. From 28.01.2008 to 10.02.2008 the club organized the Winter Coaching for the schoolboys. 4. In Inter-Hall Aftab Hall was Winner and S.T. High School was Runner s Up. 5. Mr. Anis-ur-Rehman Khan ADPE Hockey was appointed coach of combined university team by AIU. 6. Mr. Arshad Mahmood ADPE Hockey Club was appointed coach of UP for Junior Nehru Hockey Championship held at Chennai. Swimming Club 1. The AMU Swimming team participated in the All India Intervarsity Swimming Championships 2007-08 organized by University of Kerala, Trivenduram from 20.02.2008 to 04.03.2008. 2. Flood lighting of in the pool were installed at cost of Rs: 1.00 lacs and now the students can swim after sunset also. 3. The Club has organized Inter-Hall Swimming Championship (Men & Women) 2007-08 from 6 to 7 September 2007. 4. Painting and renovation of the pool was done after a gap of several years. 5. Proper drainage system was constructed at cost of Rs: 2.45 Lacs. Now the Building is safe as water is going into the university drainage system and not to the foundation of the Building. 8

Football Club 1. Mr. Zameer Ahmad & Mr. Alok Misra members of this club has been selected for senior National Camp at (Varanasi) to represent UP Football team in Santosh Trophy. 2. The AMU Football team participated in the North Zone Intervarsity Football Tournament 2007-08 at HNB Garwhal University, Srinagar in the month of November 2007. The team won three matches and lost its quarter final match against Lucknow University. The team lacked preparation due to closure of university. 3. In the month of January 2008 football club has organized Local Invitational Football Tournament. Eight teams of Aligarh participated in this tournament. 4. Under control by AMU Football club, Thai Student Association organized a Football tournament in the month February 2008. 5. AMU Football club has organized Inter-hall Football Tournament 2007-08 from 25 February to 5 th March 2008. NRSC won the tournament. 6. The Club organized summer coaching camp for senior and junior boys during the session 2007-08 in which 70 schoolboys had participated. 7. In the month of August the AMU Football Club organized the open inter School Football Tournament, in this 18 school team have participated. 8. The regular evening practice is going on throughout the year and large number of students are members of Football Club 9. The stand of the Football Ground were renovated after a long period at a cost of Rs: One Lac. Badminton Club 1. The AMU badminton team participated in the Agra Zone Badminton Championship held at Saharanpur in July 2007 and qualified runner s up Mr. Krishanveer Singh, member of AMU Badminton Club was selected for the State Championship. 2. AMU Badminton team thereafter participated in North Zone Intervarsity Badminton Tournament held at MDU Rohtak in October 2007. The team achieved one sided victory in the 1 st round against Allahabad University and lost 3-2 to PAU Ludhiana in the second round match. 9

3. The AMU Badminton club conducted the Inter-Hall and Open District Badminton Championship in February 2008. Mr. Krishanveer Singh won the Open Badminton Championship Basketball Club 1. The AMU Basketball (Men) team participated in the North Zone Intervarsity Basketball tournament held at M.J.P. Rohailkhand University Bareilly from 16 December to 23 December 2007. 2. The AMU Basketball (Women) team participated in the North East Zone Intervarsity Basketball tournament held at Utkal University Bhubaneswar from 15 to 21 November 2007 3. In the month of February 2008, the club has organized Inter-hall Basketball Tournament. 4. The Club also organized Inter Department Basketball Tournament in the month of February 2008 5. Summer and winter coaching camp were also organized during the session 2007-08. Weightlifting Club 1. AMU Weightlifting Power Lifting & Best Physique team participated in the All India Intervarsity tournament organized by Punjabi University Patiala from 15 to 24 January 2008. 2. The Club also organized Inter-Hall Weightlifting Power Lifting & Best Physique championship 2007-08 on 24 th April 2008. Wrestling Club 1. AMU wrestling team participated in the All India Intervarsity tournament organized by Shivaji University, Kolhapur from 16 to 24 November 2007. 2. The Club also organized Inter-Hall wrestling championship 2007-08 on 06.05.2008. 10

Volleyball Club 1. The AMU Volleyball (Men) team participated in the North Zone Intervarsity Basketball tournament held at M.J.P. Rohailkhand University Bareilly from 18 to 25 November 2007. 2. The AMU Volleyball (Women) team participated in the North East Zone Intervarsity Volleyball tournament held at Calcutta University Kolkata from 01 to 09 January 2008. 3. Interhall and Open District Tournaments were also organized and these tournaments were played and watched with great passion 11
