HEALTH NEWS FROM OUR CLINIC MAY Mental Health Awareness Month 22.2 % of American youth will have a diagnosable mental illness with serious impairment at some point before they are 18. What are childhood mental health disorders? Serious changes in the way children typically learn, behave, or handle their emotions, which cause distress and problems getting through the day. Monitor for the following changes in your child that may indicate a mental illness: Sadness or withdrawal that last at least two weeks or severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships at home or school. Sudden loss of appetite, frequent vomiting or use of laxatives might indicate an eating disorder. Physical symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches rather than sadness or anxiety. Difficulty concentrating and intense feelings such as overwhelming fear for no reason, sometimes with a racing heart or fast breathing. Self-harm/cutting or burning oneself. Children also may develop suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Use of drugs or alcohol to try to cope with their feelings Has trouble sleeping, including frequent nightmares Parents, you know your child the best. If you have concerns about the way your child behaves at home, in school, or with friends seek medical advice immediately. Talk to your child s healthcare professional, school counselor or visit National Institute of Mental Health s Help for Mental Illnesses webpage The following hotlines are available for immediate help: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK.
