Bloomsburg University qualified six wrestlers at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships on March 8. Earning a trip to the NCAA Championships were Nick Wilcox, Bryce Busler, Josh Veltre, Mike Dessino, Richard Perry and Justin Grant. The Huskies finished second at the EWL Championships behind Edinboro finishing with 113 points. Richard Perry won the 197-pound title, while Wilcox, Busler, Veltre, Dessino and Grant all finished second. Bloomsburg is sending six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year and third time in the eight years. Along with the last two years the other season with six qualifiers was the 2006-07 season. The Huskies have had 17 wrestlers earn 23 All-American honors at the NCAA Championships in school history. Two Bloomsburg wrestlers have won NCAA titles in school history. Floyd Shorty Hitchcock in 1977 and Ricky Bonomo in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In 1982 Don Reese finished second at 134 pounds. Five Bloomsburg University wrestlers have earned two or more All-American honors. Ricky Bonomo (3-1985, 86, 87)); Ron Russo (2-1968, 69); Rocky Bonomo (2-1986, 87); Dave Morgan (2-1988, 89); Matt Moley (2-2008, 09) Moley was Bloomsburg s last All-American taking 6th place in 2009. Ricky Bonomo is the lone Bloomsburg University wrestler in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame being inducted in 2008. Bloomsburg head coach Jason Mester was a two-time All-American for Central Michigan earning the honor in 2003 and 2004. Blooomsburg University Wrestling Head Coach Jason Mester Jason Mester begins his first season as head coach at Bloomsburg University. Mester, a graduate of Central Michigan, spent one season as the Chippewas top assistant coach after two seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Missouri. While with the Tigers he helped lead the team to their first Big 12 Tournament championship in 2012 after a runner-up finish in 2011. Missouri boasted a school-record four individual Big 12 champions in 2012 and qualified an individual for the NCAA Championships in all 10 weight classes. Prior to Missouri, Mester spent five seasons as the strength and conditioning coach at the University of Nebraska. He worked directly with 14 All-Americans and three NCAA Championships finalists including two national champions and was part of a staff that led Nebraska to a pair of fourth-place team finishes at the NCAA Championships. One of the top wrestlers in CMU history, Mester is tied for 11th in school history with 104 career victories from 2001-04. He won three Mid- American Conference championships (2001, 2003, 2004) at 141 pounds and was an All-American in both 2003 and 2004. A three-time recipient of the Chick Sherwood Award as CMU s Most Valuable Wrestler, Mester was named MAC Wrestler of the Year as a senior. Mester s career winning percentage of.806 (104-25 overall) still ranks fourth overall in program history, and he owns two of the top eight single-season winning percentages in CMU history:.897 (26-3 overall, No. 6 all-time) in 2002-03 and.891 (33-4 overall, No. 8 all-time) in 2003-04. Mester earned a sport studies degree from CMU in 2004. He spent his first year following graduation as an assistant coach at CMU, helping lead the Chippewas to MAC regular season and tournament titles and a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2005. Mester and his wife Lory, are the parents of two children (daughter Charlotte and son Cecil). Assistant Coach Marcus Gordon Marcus Gordon begins his first season as assistant wrestling coach at Bloomsburg after spending six seasons as the assistant coach at Ashland (OH) University where he was also a standout wrestling for the Eagles. At Ashland Gordon was involved in every aspect of the AU program playing a prominent role in recruiting, assisting in camps and special projects along with coaching responsibilities during matches and practices. He helped coach 26 NCAA D-II national qualifiers; nine NCAA D-II All-Americans and 21 NWCA All-Academic student-athletes. He was helped the Eagles to a 15-2-1 dual meet record in 2010-11, the school s best record in 30 years. He was a two-time qualifier for the national meet and a two-time Academic All- America (Wrestling Coaches of America). He won a championship at the 2008 Midwest Classic and that same season was a regional champion. During the 2007-08 season Gordon was ranked as high as third in the country. Gordon also served as a team captain. Gordon began his collegiate career at Eastern Michigan where he was a two-year starter on the mat at EMU. He and his wife, Jessica, live in the Bloomsburg area.

NICK WILCOX NOTES-133 SECOND NCAA APPEARANCE WILCOX 1-1 VS. FIRST ROUND OPPONENT Nick Wilcox is 1-1 against first round opponent Zane Richards. Wilcox beat Richards by fall at Madison Square Garden in December, then lost by decision to Richards at the NWCA Duals. WILCOX HAS STRONG VA DUALS At the Virginia Duals Nick Wilcox went 2-1 with both wins by major decision. In his two wins Wilcox registered a total of eight takedowns and three near falls. For his three matches Wilcox gave up just seven total points. BRYCE BUSLER NOTES-149 SECOND NCAA APPEARANCE (3-1 vs. NCAA qualifiers) BUSLER EWL WRESTLER OF THE WEEK (Nov. 10) Bryce Busler was named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Nov. 10. Busler was named the Outstanding Wrestler and won the 149-pound weight class at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational to earn the honor. Busler started his day by registering two technical falls. The first was against Connor Melde of Army by a score of 16-0, and the second came against John Crast of Brockport, 16-1. In his semifinal bout, Busler ma- jored Oklahoma University s Dryden Dennis 9-0. In the championship final Busler faced the Sooner s 2013 NCAA champion Kendric Maple. Busler was behind 3-1 in the second period of that bout, but pushed the action and gained two stalling points against Maple to send the match into overtime. In the overtime Busler registered a takedown to score the upset victory. JOSH VELTRE NOTES-165 SECOND NCAA APPEARANCE (3-5 vs. NCAA qualifiers) VELTRE BACK STRONG After missing a month due to injury Josh Veltre has gone 12-3 since his return to the lineup at the Virginia Duals. The only blemishes on his record since coming back are losses to nationally ranked wrestlers; a 5-3 loss to #13 Joe Booth of Hofstra; a 7-4 loss to #9 Jackson Morse of Illinois and a 2-1 loss to #18 Ramon Santiago of Rider. VELTRE STRONG AT BROCKPORT Josh Veltre captured the 165 pound title at the Brockport Invitational allowing just four points in his four wins. Veltre opened with an 11-0 major decision, then scored wins by scores of 5-1; 6-2 and 4-1. MIKE DESSINO NOTES-174 THIRD NCAA APPEARANCE (1-5 vs. NCAA qualifiers) DESSINO RANKS HIGH AMONG ALL-TIME PIN LEADERSAT BU Mike Dessino is tied for second all-time on the school s pin leader list with 45. He is tied with former standout Mike Spaid with 45 falls. The all-time leader is Shorty Hitchock with 58. For the season Dessino leads the Huskies with 11 wins by fall. DESSINO TOPS 100 WINS Dessino is tied with former Bloomsburg great Frank Hickman for 15th all-time in wins with 103. He picked up his 100th career win inn gradn style winning by fall against George Mason. RICHARD PERRY NOTES-197 THIRD NCAA APPEARANCE (3-1 vs. NCAA qualifiers) MOVING UP THE WIN LIST Perry has won 108 matches in his career and is 14th on the school s alltime list. He will tie for 12th with one win at NCAA s, while two wins will tie for 10th (with former Bloomsburg All-American Rocky Bonomo). PERRY 5-1 IN MATCHES WITH RANKED OPPONENTS Perry is 5-1 this season in matches with ranked opponents. In the semi-finals of the Brockport Invitational Perry beat then 11th-ranked Dan Mitchell of American University. In the finals Perry lost to fifthranked Travis Rutt of Oklahoma. At the Keystone Classic he beat #20 Alex Polizzi of Northwestern in the semi-finals and #12 Mitchel of American University in the finals. Perry avenged his loss to Rutt by pinning Rutt, ranked fifth, at the NWCA Duals. Perry s other win was over #25 Cody Reed of Binghamton. PERRY SETS SCHOOL RECORD Perry has set a school record with 30 straight wins after losing his second match of the year to Oklahoma s Travis Rutt. In his last 11 matches Perry has won three fall, six by major decision and two by decision. During his long winning streak he has captured first place at the EWL Championships, Keystone Classic, the PSAC Championships and the Cradle Gear Invitational. LONG WINNING STREAKS Perry s 30 straight wins puts him in rare company among BU wrestlers all-time. He broke the old school record of 27 straight wins set by George Carter in 1999-00. A year ago Josh Veltre won 25 straight matches with Mike Spaid owning a 21-match winning streak in 2006-07. PERRY SWEEPS WEEKLY WRESTLING HONORS (2-17) Perry was named both the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) and the co- PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Feb. 16. He shares the PSAC honor with Ernest James of Edinboro. Perry won both his matches at the NWCA National Duals to earn the honor. JUSTIN GRANT NOTES-285 SECOND NCAA APPEARANCE (1-2 vs. NCAA qualifiers) GRANT WITH EIGHT PINS Heavyweight Justin Grant got his eighth pin of the season in the Huskies match with Hofstra. Among Grant s eight pins, four have come in the first period. GRANT WINNING STREAK COMES TO AN END Justin Grant had a 13-match winning streak come to an end with a loss to ninth-ranked Mike McClure in the finals of the Cradle Gear Invitational at the end of December. Six of wins during the winning streak were by fall, including four first period pins. GRANT GOES 3-0 AT VA DUALS Justin Grant went 3-0 at the VA Duals outscoring his opponents 18-4 in the three matches. Grant, who had a win over #19 Joe Stofli of Bucknell, had a total of five takedowns in the three matches.

Blooomsburg University Wrestling HUSKIES WIN THREE PSAC INDIVIDUAL TITLES In finishing second in the team race at the PSAC Championships on Dec. 7 the Huskies captured three PSAC individual titles. Mike Dessino (174); Richard Perry (197) and Justin Grant (285) all claimed crowns. For Dessino it is his second PSAC title and first since 2010-11, while Perry and Grant each repeated at PSAC champs. Dessino won all three of his matches by capturing bonus points. He won two matches by first period falls with the other win by major decision. Perry won all three of his matches to repeat at 197 pounds. His first win came on a third period pin with his other two victories coming by decision. Grant had to win four matches to repeat at PSAC champion.
