Bloomsburg University qualified six wrestlers at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships on March 9. Earning a trip to the NCAA Championships were Frank Hickman, Josh Veltre, Nick Wilcox, Josh Roosa, Richard Perry and Justin Grant. The Huskies, ranked 15th in the final USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll, finished the regular season with a record of Bloomsburg won 12 of its final 13 dual meets. The Huskies won their first outright EWL Dual Meet title this season with a perfect 5-0 record. Bloomsburg had last shared an EWL Dual Meet title in 1993 with Lock Haven. Frank Hickman won his 100th career match with an opening round pin at the EWL Championships. With 102 wins Hickman is now 14th in school history in career victories. Head coach John Stutzman is third all-time in school history with 97 wins (current) and needs three more to become the third coach in school history to reach the 100- win mark. The Huskies have increased their season win total each year for the last six seasons under Stutzman. Bloomsburg is sending six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the second time in John Stutzman s career. In the Huskies also sent six wrestlers to the championships. Overall under Stutzman the Huskies have qualified 33 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. The Huskies have had 17 wrestlers earn 23 All-American honors at the NCAA Championships in school history. Despite not having as many resources as some others it shows that we can compete at the highest level as long as we believe and work hard. 2 Blooomsburg University Wrestling Head Coach John Stutzman John Stutzman is in his eight season as head coach of the Bloomsburg University wrestling team in Stutzman has guided the Huskies to a record of in his eight seasons ranking him 3rd all-time in career wins. He has coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, six Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions, 66 EWL place winners and 33 NCAA Division I national qualifiers. Twice Stutzman has earned the EWL Coach of the Year honor as well as producing the 2007 EWL and PSAC Freshman of the Year, the 2009 EWL Championship s Outstanding Wrestler and the 2011 PSAC Freshman of the Year. A year ago Stutzman led the Huskies to a record of 16-7 and finished 2nd at the PSAC Championships as well as 5th at the EWL Championships. The 16 wins included wins over West Virgina University, North Carolina State, and Buffalo. At the EWL championships Sutzman led the Huskies to a 5th place finish, while qualifying four wrestlers for the NCAA championships. During the season Stutzman led the Huskies to a record of 14-6 and finished third at the EWL Championships. The 14 wins were the most for the program since the season and included wins over Penn, North Carolina State, Northern Iowa and Buffalo. At the EWL championships Stutzman led the BU to a third place finish, while qualifying two wrestlers for the NCAA championships, including EWL-champion Mike Dessino. Stutzman was honored by his fellow coaches by being named the EWL Coach of the Year. In Stutzman led the Huskies to a record of 10-8, which included an appearance at the NWCA National Duals for the first time in 20 years. Song had spent three years as the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Iowa wrestling team. During Song s tenure, Iowa has crowned four NCAA champions, 19 All-Americans, six Big Ten champions and 15 academic all-big Ten honorees. The Hawkeyes won the 2010 NCAA and Big Ten tournament titles, while earning Big Ten regular season crowns in 2010 and Iowa also set school records for longest dual unbeaten (84) and winning streaks (69), longest dual road unbeaten (51) and winning streaks (44), most Carver-Hawkeye Arena victories (11) and most dual shutouts (8). 3 Bloomsburg End Season Ranked 15th In USA Today Poll Bloomsburg ended the season with a record of 17-3 and ranked 15th in the final USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. The Huskies were as high as 14th (for two weeks) during the season. Bloomsburg beat three teams that were ranked in the top 20 this season (Maryland, Pitt, Edinboro) and lost to two others (Missouri and Rutgers). FRANK HICKMAN NOTES-157 THIRD NCAA APPEARANCE Hickman Claims EWL Title Senior Frank Hickman won his first-ever EWL title when he picked up a win by medical forfeit at the EWL Championships. Hickman had won by fall and decision to reach the EWL finals. Hickman Continues Big Senior Season Frank Hickman has had a dominating senior season winning 27 of his 31 matches. Since Dec. 18 he has won 21 of his last 23 matches and in that time (taking out his four wins by fall, one by medical forfeit and one loss) he has outscored his opponents Of his last 21 wins four have been by fall, three by tech fall and eight by major decision. He has also blanked two opponents and held another to just one point in the match. Hickman Twice named PSAC Wrestler of the Week Frank Hickman was named the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 2 after helping lead the Huskies to the team title at the Brute Invitational on Dec. 29. Hickman won five matches (from Dec. 18--Jan. 1), including four at the Brute tournament, to earn the honor. Hickman was also named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 26 after winning three matches at the Northeast Duals. Hickman Named the EWL Wrestler of the Week After a big team win over Edinboro, Hickman was named the EWL Wrestler of Week on Feb. 4. Hickman earned the honor after scoring a 19-4 technical fall victory to get the Huskies on the board against the Fighting Scots and helping the team rally for a win. Hickman Against the Field Hickman has faced seven NCAA-qualifiers this season and is 5-4 on the year with all four of his losses coming to NCAA-qualifiers. He is 2-0 against Donnie Tasser of Pitt. JOSH VELTRE NOTES-165 FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE Veltre Wins First EWL Title Josh Veltre won the EWL Title at 165 pounds. It was the first EWL for Veltre. He is the Huskies first EWL champ at that weight since Jim Bertulis in Earlier in the season Veltre also claimed the 165 pound title at the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Championships. Velrte against the Field Veltre has faced eight wrestlers who will compete at the NCAA Championships and has posted a record of 8-3. He has faced Edinboro s Johnn Greishmeier three times with wins in two of those matches. JOSH ROOSA NOTES-149 FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE A Healthy Roosa Means Wins Since getting back in the lineup after missing a month due to an injury Josh Roosa has won 10 of his 13 matches, including six straight at one point. In those six wins opponents scored just 11 points off him. His winning streak was snapped with a 6-5 loss in the first round of the EWL Championships Roosa Against the Field Roosa has faced five NCAA-qualifiers this season and has a record of 2-3 in those matches. Roosa Wins EWL Wrestler of the Week in Early November Senior Josh Roosa was named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Nov. 18. Roosa won the 149-lb weight class at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia winning five matches on the day and helping the Huskies to a fourth place finish as a team. Roosa was also named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week in late January. NICK WILCOX NOTES-133 FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE Wilcox Placements Nick Wilcox has placed in three events for the Huskies this season. He won the Brute Invitational; was second at the PSAC Championships and was third at the EWL Championships. EWL Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 6 Wilcox was named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Jan. 6. In the Huskies win over Maryland, Wilcox scored a 6-3 win over 12th-ranked Geoffrey Alexander to the Huskies to a win over the Terps. Wilcox against the Field Wilcox has faced eight NCAA qualifiers this season and has a record of 4-5 in those matches. He is 1-1 against Pitt s Shelton Mack. RICHARD PERRY NOTES-197 SECOND NCAA APPEARANCE Perry Placements Richard Perry won the PSAC Championships and Brute Invitational in December. He also finished second at the EWL Championships to earn his second trip to the NCAA Championships. Veltre On Long Winning Streak Veltre has won 24 straight matches and leads all BU starters in wins with 32. During his long winning streak Veltre has knocked off three ranked wrestlers (Johnny Greisheimer-Edinboro; Zach Toal-Missouri; Tyler Wilps-Pitt, twice). The winning streak for Veltre is Bloomsburg s longest winning streak since George Carter had a 27-match winning streak in Perry s With Long Win Streak During Season Richard Perry had a 17-match winning streak snapped on Jan. 5 when he lost to then 15th-ranked Christian Boley of Maryland. Prior to that Perry s last loss came when he lost to nationally-ranked Jake Merdith of Arizona State at the Campbell University Duals on Nov. 10. The 17-match winning streak was a career-long for Perry.

4 Blooomsburg University Wrestling Perry against the Field Wilcox has faced six NCAA-qualifiers this season and is 3-4 in those matches. All of Perry s losses this season have come to NCAA-qualifiers. JUSTIN GRANT NOTES-285 FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE Grant 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier Justin Grant qualified for the 2012 United States Olympics Wrestling Trials. Grant finished second in his freestyle weight class at the U.S. Olympic Qualifying Trial in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Grant reached the final at 120 kg/264.5 pounds, falling to former Division III national champion John Helgerson of Wartburg College 2-1, 1-2, 1-0. Grant Pins Way to PSAC Title Justin Grant won two of three matches by fall on his way to the PSAC title. Grant opened his day with a pin in just 20 seconds over his opponent from Millersville, then ended the tourney with a pin in 3:22 over his Kutztown opponent. Tournament Placings Grant on the PSAC and Brute Invitational Titles in December and was second at the EWL Championships. In the Brute Invitational Grant won the title with a first period pin. Grant Against NCAA-Qualifiers Grant has faced nine NCAA-qualifiers this season and has record of 7-5 in those matches. He is 2-0 against both Jacob Kettler of George Mason and Ernest James of Edinboro.
