1 THE LINK Tregrehan Speed Hill Climb June 2016 The weekend of June 25-26th is the first of this year's Tregrehan speed hill climbs. Located in the picturesque parkland of the Tregrehan Estate, between St. Austell and St. Blazey, this technically challenging course has been thrilling spectators for over forty years. The weekend s action will include both cars and motorcycles. The event is a round of the Association of South West Motor Clubs Bridge Tyres Point S ASWMC Hill Climb Championship and the Cornish Speed Championship. The motorcycles will be competing in a round of the National Hill Climb Championship. Each day will see forty plus cars and forty to fifty motorcycles. The entry fee is 75 per day or it s reduced to 140 if you enter both days. Entries close on Monday 20th June. Contact entries secretary Jeremy Thomas for further details on (5-9pm) or entries@trurodmc.co.uk or visit our website: Spectator information can also be found on our website. The postcode for your satnav is PL24 2SJ. There is plenty of parking on site, and there will be catering available in both the spectator area and paddock. Practice runs commence daily at 09:30. Entry for spectators is 5 per person and free for children. Lots of marshals are needed to support the event. You do not have to be a club member and those without experience will be given instructions and put with a marshal who knows the ropes. You need to be signed on by in time for the briefing. If you would like to help marshal please contact Jay Brown chiefmarshal@plymouthmotorclub.co.uk mobile Coast to Coast Tour Our Coast to Coast Tour took place on Sunday 15 th May and was a great success. A full entry of 52 cars took part representing the best classic and modern sports cars from around the world. Fantastic weather too! The start was at the Atlantic Café at Portreath beach (photo right by Nigel Stephens). Phil and the team served tea, coffee and breakfast rolls before everyone set off. The route took the cars across Cornwall to Marazion where they had a lovely view of the sea and St Michael s Mount before heading to the first checkpoint at Praa Sands. After this they followed a little used coastal lane and had a fantastic view over the sea as they headed down into Porthleven. Coffee break was at the lovely Harbour Inn. The second part of the morning route took the cars around Helston and onto the Lizard peninsula. Another beautiful sea view was admired as the cars descended into Poldhu Cove to checkpoint two. After this they travelled across the Lizard and soon reached the picturesque seaside village of Coverack and checkpoint three. It was only a short drive up the road from there to the lunch break at Roskilly s Ice Cream Farm. We had a lovely lunch in the courtyard and another chance to look at all the cars. (Fraser Nash Le Mans Replica photo by Dave Brenton)
2 The afternoon section took the cars northwards to the beautiful Gillan Creek and checkpoint four followed by the tiny creekside road to St Anthony in Meneage. Shortly afterwards they passed over the ancient bridges at Mawgan Creek and headed for Gweek and Port Navas and checkpoint five. The route then headed towards Falmouth and drivers enjoyed a circuit of Pendennis Point with its spectacular sea views and checkpoint six before continuing with a lovely drive along Falmouth seafront followed by Swanpool beach and finally Maenporth beach for the finish. Cream teas were served at The Cove Restaurant which must have one of Cornwall s loveliest settings overlooking the sea. (Lotus Cortina Mk1 & Ford Escort RS1600 photos by Dave Brenton) The awards were all voted for by the participants and the most admired cars were as follows: 1 st David & Karen Richards, Fraser Nash Le Mans Replica 2 nd David Coleman & Michael Bowden, Ford Escort RS rd Bob Pepper & Elliot Bullen, Lotus Cortina Mk1 4 th John & Catherine Ferris, Triumph TR3A 5 th John & Dominique Sharpe, Jaguar E Type Series 1 6 th Roger & Philippa Kessell, Volvo P1800S Well done also to the next few high scoring cars: David Barnes & Doug Castle, Austin 7 Opal; Simon & Matthew Elks, Austin Healey Sprite Mk1; William & Julia Schofield, Jaguar XK150 dhc; Julian Stephens & John Bryant, Triumph TR4A; Keith & Julie Julian, Jaguar E Type Series 1. A special thank you to Pete Wellington who produced a superb route book and also supplied the rally plates and stickers. Thanks also to Dave Brenton & Allen Iggulden for course opening car, Tony Wood for vehicle checks and, with Jeremy Thomas, also course closing car and to all the marshals who criss-crossed Cornwall to cover all the checkpoints for us Bob & Nora Eddy, Roger & Elsie Hargreaves, Chris & Joanna Cocks, Nathan Prisk, Dave Biggs, Roger & Bernice Wickins and Roy & Lyn Windebank. Much appreciated. Thank you to all of you who returned the survey. We have had lots of lovely feedback from everyone as well as useful comments and suggestions. All being well we will run next year s event on 14 th May. Aerial photo taken at the finish by Elliot Bullen using a drone. More photos are on our website:
3 Euroclassic Tour of Ireland Tuesday 13th - Monday 19th September The event is run by Pete Wellington and his team who worked for the Motor Sports Association (MSA), running their highly successful Euroclassic for more than 20 years. This fully supported tour visits the beautiful scenic areas of Ireland, from the Wicklow Mountains to Waterford and Kinsale and onto Blarney and the Ring of Kerry then up to the Cliffs of Moyer to the finish at Birr. Not only are there great scenic routes, but you will also have a chance to drive the Anglesey Circuit on day one and Mondello Circuit at the end of the tour. Closing date for entries is 30 June. More details here: AGM 2016 Truro and District Motor Club held their Annual General Meeting on the 18 th April at Truro Golf Club. The club has had another successful year in motorsport brought 14 Autosolos held at either Holman or Penhaligon car park at Cornwall College; as well as two weekends of Tregrehan Speed Hillclimb in St. Austell. TDMC also held numerous social events looks to bring even more this year. TDMC are thrilled with another year of Academy entrants who are excited at their first year of motorsport. We have also got many Autosolos. Tregrehan is not very far away and all those involved are looking forward to an amazing weekend of motorsport. As Club Secretary of Truro and District Motor Club, I would like to thank all those who attended the AGM and I would like to announce this year s committee. Although some remain in position we have had a few new to the committee who are eager to take on important roles. President - David Richards CBE Vice Presidents Andrew Dinner, Tony Wood and Pete Wellington Honorary Treasurer Nick Vincent Honorary Secretary Lesley Weeks Competition Secretary Dave Brenton Membership Secretary Manda Moo Chief Marshal David Robertson-Wells Newsletter Editor Melody Kozlowski Web Master Nick Vincent Press Officer Allen Iggulden TDMC Company Directors Tony Wood, Dave Brenton and Allen Iggulden New members elected onto the committee Graham Seear and David Garner Lesley Weeks, Club Secretary Camel Vale 12 car rallies After the finish of the Coast to Coast Tour, I was talking to David Southwell, who told me that he had been persuaded to run some more 12 car rallies for Camel Vale Motor Club. He asked me to pass on this information as to make it worthwhile he would like four TDMC members to enter them. He assured me that the first one would definitely be run for novices only, with a reduced average speed to possibly 25mph. The overall distance would likewise be reduced to probably about 60 miles. The route would also be of a novice nature to encourage some fresh blood into Cornish rallying. I will be out marshalling on these and I look forward to welcoming some TDMC members into my time controls. It is a cheap form of motor-sport, considering that you will be driving for about two hours. A competition licence is not needed and David is happy to give advice about road rallying to anyone interested. If you want to know more, please contact me and I will put you in contact with David. 4 AutoSOLO at Penhaligan, Cornwall College, Camborne Can I first congratulate all concerned with the Bank Holiday AutoSOLO on Monday 30 th May. Manda, Richard, Lesley, Jeremy and John are only some who have helped to make these events what they are today. I have marshalled at many Truro and District Motor Club AutoSOLOs, but today s was very slick in the running, organisation and time keeping. All the usual entry suspects were present. Wayne from Plymouth, Jason in his lovely 1.6 GTi 205, Marek in his fast Honda, Squirrel in his sideways hotrod, James in his beautiful Mini, Niall driving as fast as he usually does, and many others, far too many to mention here. I think special mention should be made of our Chairman, John H Collins, who entertained us with his excellent car control, as was also Nick in his BMW, with brilliant control, in sometimes difficult and tight situations. At the end of the day, FTD went to Niall Heywood, and the 1st in classes were James Menear, Jason Metters, Mark Crowle and Ted Chalcraft. My apologies for those that I ve left out, but you were all very professional drivers today, with displays of how one should react if things go wrong, or how to stop a skid and regain control. I was most enthralled and look forward to the next AutoSOLO, which I would encourage as many of you as possible to marshal on. Admittedly, we were blessed with glorious weather today but even if the weather is not so pleasant, it is always wonderful to see so many drivers in total control of their vehicles. Come along to the next one and help us marshal this inexpensive form of motorsport that I know, once you have seen it, or driven in it, you will be hooked to come back time and time again as I do. Next date is Sunday 19 th June. Previous results, entry forms and ASR's are available at: Allen Iggulden, TDMC Press Officer Blandford Mad March Hare Slalom by Wayne Grimshaw A chance viewing of the Bournemouth Club website about something else, and I saw on the calendar The March Slalom, and Plymouth MC was an invited club. As I am a member of Plymouth and Truro my entry was put in. A quick to Aaron, and my entry was sorted. It s a few years since I had been to an event at Blandford. The only possible hiccup was that I was competing near Dorchester the previous weekend in the Golden Springs Trial organised by Woolbridge MC which was a round of the MSA National, BTRDA and ASWMC Trials Championships. I let Aaron know that I would let him know if the car survived the Trial, which thankfully it did, taking a class win and 5 th Overall on Index of Performance. My car is now supported by The Devonport Royal Dockyard Employee Trust, an organisation that supports sports men and women in and around Plymouth in all areas of sport. A bright start to the day, dry but a bit chilly, and a good entry of 19 cars assembled. It s often how a route map is drawn that can actually make it look more complicated than it actually is to drive. That s just how it seemed on this occasion. The space available at Blandford Army Camp is fantastic, enough room to have three sections laid out with two runs at each and a total of nine sections to be driven during the day. A good mix of cars in three classes, from Mini 1275GT, Corsa, Saxo, MX5, Clio and a Mk1 and Mk2 Escort. The classes split at 1300, 1600 and 2000, so the Nova was in unknown territory as it s usually in the small capacity class. After the first three tests having been driven twice each it was very close. Edward Hoare in a Clio in Class 3, the biggest engine capacity class, was leading overall on , from me in my Nova SR in Class 2 on Richard Bailey was leading the small engine class with
5 Twelve more sections would be driven and the dry ideal conditions were very welcome after a miserable wet winter. The surface of the driving area is very abrasive and a number of cars were having to change tyres frequently. Aaron was kept busy compiling the results and after each set of three tests, he printed off interim results so everyone knew what was happening. After the next batch of runs, I was well pleased to have moved ahead of Edward in his Clio with a time of from his Richard was still ahead in Class 1 on with Steve Candy in his Mk1 Escort on in Class 2 and Michael Stewart was 2 nd in Class 3 in his Mk2 Escort on Not too much separating the cars, a hit cone or wrong test would certainly make a big difference. I completed the final batch of tests correctly, concentrating on driving them correctly rather than risking a wrong test or hitting a cone, and it paid off. Aaron soon had the results printed and I was really pleased that my trusty Nova SR had not only won the class but also taken FTD. The round trip of over 200 miles was well worth it. My time at the end was to take FTD, with Edward in his Clio taking Class 3 on and Michael Stewart in his Mk2 Escort 2nd on Richard Bailey took the honours in Class 1 on from Colin Stewart 2nd in his Corsa on In Class 2 Steve Candy in his Mk1 Escort took the award for 1 st Class on from Paul Coleman in his Puma. Wayne Grimshaw Can I say a big thank you to all the organising team who made this event happen and to the marshals and timekeepers on the day without whom we, the competitors, would have no events and for the warm welcome I had from everyone who seemed surprised I had driven from Plymouth to compete. Request for marshals - THE ROC 5K 500 ROC s exciting, scenic 5K (3 mile) charity fun run will take place after work on Tuesday 28 th June, starting and finishing at Truro s Lemon Quay. TDMC has been asked if we can help with marshals for the event. 400 individuals and teams took part in last year s sell-out event. 13,000 was raised for ROC, a charity which supports local people with learning disabilities. This year s event promises to be even bigger and better, with an entry limit of 500, new sponsors and two really special prizes. People of all abilities can run, jog or walk. The minimum age is 11.
