1 March 2016 FLAT WRITE! The Monthly Newsletter of Carlton and District Motor Club Editorial and Committee News Members of the month for February were the marshalling team who returned to the Great Orme for the Cambrian Rally. The ANEMMC Roadrunner stage rally championship continues on 6 th March with another sell out return to Donington Park. This time there is a Historic section and very appropriately, I will be out again complete with new helmet with some (expensive) contraption strapped to it. I suppose the new rules have only got to save one life to be worthwhile. I must admit to smiling to myself when the Donington regs referred to 55 miles of smooth tarmac but I have heard through the Intervine that the loose gravel infield link, which cut up badly last year, has been asphalted. This will remove the desire to perform a wall of death act up the grass bank. Please try to attend the CDMC Annual General Meeting at the Star on the 15 th March, this is your opportunity to influence the future direction of the Club. Sadly and it has been happening too frequently in recent years, another of our rallying superstars has passed away at an early age and while still very active in the MSA Historic Rally Championship. David Stokes won the 1976 Castrol/Autosport Championship and was only beaten by Jimmy McRae and Malcolm Wilson in 78 and 79. When he returned to an Escort he went on to win four MSA British Historic Championships in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and competed on nearly every round for 12 years.

2 CDMC extends sincere sympathies to his family and an enormous group of friends in rallying. On a brighter note we have been sent details of Rob Lowes new rally weapon, currently under preparation.

They used The Vale of Belvoir and provided an interesting and testing route. Neil Simpson and Steve Shephard came a close second to Dennis Cooke/ Tom Murphy with David Cox and Mark Manning third. Neil and Stephen enjoy their 12 cars!

Clive Martin in the course opener was chauffeured by Andy McCree while Anji and Jean were closers arriving back at the refurbished Chequers Inn in Cropwell Butler after all the chips had been scoffed.

She writes: A Busy February for the Martins Firstly planning and running our first 12 car from scratch which ran on the 9 th February with 9 entrants, unfortunately two crews had to cancel on the day. Driving the route on the previous Sunday we came across a road closure which meant a detour near Melton and the additional paperwork probably led to us missing the fact that we had one of the sections timing wrong sorry to all.

6 Two weeks before the event the planned starting pub The Chequers at Cropwell Bishop had had a change of manager who fortunately was very accommodating and prepared chip butties for us even though his kitchen was not yet up and running. Talking to him on the day he used to rally himself in the 70 s and 80 s and was very interested in what we were doing. Thanks to all the marshals, Andy Mcree for driving Clive round and Jean for helping me as course closer. 6 th February HRCR Training Day I attended the excellent training day near Knutsford as Clive and I are hoping; back permitting, to do some of the HRCR rallies this year. As I had gone on my own I was paired with another more experienced navigator. After an introduction to the basics of HRCR rallying on maps & plotting we had a talk by Don Barrow on the types of equipment available from Romers and potties to trips, which were available to purchase on the day. The drivers then left the room for a separate session on car preparation whilst we had the basics of navigation. An excellent lunch was provided by the local ladies over which we had to plot a route whilst we ate to simulate rally conditions. Most crews had a basic plot to do whilst the experienced had a more complicated one including a circular herringbone which I managed to crack quite quickly. After lunch the experienced crews had much more detailed navigational techniques whilst the rest drove their plotted route and a test set up for them nearby. At 40 for the day including lunch and afternoon tea, a rally essential woolly hat, roamer, pencil and rubber I think this was excellent value and a good way to meet future fellow competitors. 13 th February Cambrian Rally A change of date from October to February saw a smaller group than normal head for the Great Orme at Llandudno to man the finish controls for the last stage of the day. Les,

7 Glyn and I manned the stop line and Sean Baxter met us and was helped by two brothers on the flying finish. Only two slowly sideways cars were allowed to do demonstration runs due to MSA rules over log books, before the main rally came through. A delay of about 20 minutes before the last 8 or so cars ran meant it was getting dark but we were pleased to see Tom Murphy make it to finish especially as they rolled on last Octobers event. Of the 133 starters only 82 made it to the finish with 3 crews rolling. The event was eventually won by Luke Francis and John Roberts in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX. After packing up we adjourned to Llandudno for fish & chips. Wednesday 17 th February An invitation from Mark Fletcher to do Eastwood s scatter starting at the Bridge Inn in Oxton couldn t be ignored as it is our doorstep but for a change I drove and Clive sat in the hot seat. Slightly different from Ian s January Scatter for our club we were given 34 grid references on two A4 sheets and more sheets with a picture of what we were looking for (taken in the daylight) with the required information blanked out. On what had to be one of the wettest days of the year around here, several roads had huge puddles so rather wisely we decided to avoid the fords at Beanford and Rufford. Locations had varying values depending on distance from the start or hardness to find with only the first 75% of clues counting. We were very pleased to finish second out of 7 starters.

8 Saturday 27 th February I have helped by time keeping on all but the first round of the Donington Winter Series Auto solo and PCA this winter and Clive & Colin both competed on the Boxing Day & Colin in the January round in the Clio 1 st in class and 4 th overall and he will be out again on the 27 th. All the rounds have attracted full or near full entries and have been held either in the paddock area or on the tarmac lake. With a fairly large layout competitors are encouraged to walk the route, which is reversed for the afternoon runs. Several year olds have been competing what a brilliant way to learn car control See you out there. HRCR Open day Gaydon Vince Orme flew the Carlton flag at Gaydon again this year handing out Nottingham Classic Fliers and chatting with potential entries. He reports a good response and he has sent me some pictures of interesting cars on display there. Vince writes: Having attended the HRCR open day at the Heritage motor museum, Gaydon, in 2015 and thinking it a worthwhile day out I had it pencilled in again for this year.

This year the HRCR (Historic Rally Car Register) Open Day on 16th January 2016, looked back on 50 years of the controversy created by the Mini on the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally as well as celebrate the Minis continued success and popularity in historic rallying today. This year however I was attending ; and ably assisted by Eddie Beilby ; to set up a stand to promote the Nottingham classic run being part of the HRCR scenic tours series. Prior to the day I obtained various display material from John Thornhill, together with a boxful of promotional flyers. Our arrival there was slightly delayed by an unforeseen junction closure [to find out later this had affected quite a number of people.] The day went fairly uneventfully and achieved its purpose. A large number of flyers were taken. A decent number of people put their name down on a mailing list [a lot more than some of the other stands ]. Later that week I find from John that 4 entries have already been received. This year the main museum was shut [it reopens as the British museum in mid Feb. ].Normally attendance at HRCR lets you into the museum at a reduced admission. Whether the closure or other reasons I felt the attendance numbers were down quite a lot on There also seemed less display cars. Still a good day out to consider for 2017 particularly as the museum itself will again be open. A few photos I managed to take shown elsewhere. 12 CARLTON AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB EVENTS Carlton and District Motor Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at The Star Inn, Middle Street, Beeston. Please make the effort to come down; it s a great Real Ale pub with a full calendar of quizzes, open mic. nights etc. with meals and pub snacks now available. The access problems caused by the tram works are now resolved and free parking is available in various town centre car parks and on surrounding roads. WHATS ON Events in March 2016 Sunday 6 th March Tuesday 8 th March Tuesday 15 th March Out of Season meet at Ruddington Heritage Centre with our friends the Stewarts. 10:30 to 4:30, bring and show, talk and café open.
