3 1959 Hunts Kart Racing Club 50th Anniversary Year JUNE EAST ANGLIAN TROPHY MEETING 12 TH /13 TH JUNE WELCOME TO ALL COMPETITORS to the JUNE EAST ANGLIAN TROPHY MEETING. This is a NON club Championship Meeting. The Club also welcomes for the second year THE BRITISH HISTORIC KART CLUB which will have a demonstration session on both Saturday and Sunday. Details of the race weekend will be found in the race programme. RACE ENTRIES. Please would competitor s application for race weekends be sent early to enable the competition secretary more time to prepare for the race weekend. Preparations for the team to be chosen for the ACE and KING of Clubs to be held in August. A team shirt will be given to each team member, also a contribution towards the entry fee. For the July and August meetings circuit 2 will be used. ALL PITBAY holders issued with a permit must display to enable the Club to ensure that competitors are parked in their correct bays. The permits will be handed out by HKRC officials or can be collected in race control over the race weekend. All Tarmac bays have been hired for and there are presently only a few concrete bays available for weekend rent or annual hire. VACANT PIT BAYS can be rented for 20 per weekend, please visit race control for availability. If anyone is parked on a bay that has not be hired, then they will be asked to move or Pay for Hire if the bay is not to be used for the weekend. All news and Club information can be found on the HKRC website TYRE DISPOSAL. Tyres are still being left on site at race meetings. The situation is improving which is greatly appreciated by the Club. The club asks that this continues which will delay any decision on passing on disposal costs to the Competitors. Please take the tyres with you or pay a 3 fee per set of tyres to any of the kart traders or the maintenance team who will be able to dispose of them. IMPORTANT NOTICES DOGS are not permitted to be walked around the paddock during practice or race day. All DOGS must be kept with the pitbay area of the owner. When walking your dogs PLEASE ensure you clear any dog fouling. FEBRUARY AND MARCH MEETING there were indications this was not being cleared. IF this continues WALKING DOGS on the site will NOT be permitted. Thankyou for your cooperation. Dogs must be kept with the pit space allocated during practice and race day (SR 25) Motorised bikes/ scooters are not allowed to be used in the paddock, track, or car park areas around the site over the race weekend. Push bikes, skateboards etc. may not be used from 8.30a.m until 6.30 p.m. on any day where practice, either unofficial or official, or racing is taking place. (SR 24) NEW ASR S TO BE POSTED FROM THE MAY MEETING Any footage from Cameras fitted to karts on race day will not be accepted for any driving or appeal situations with the Clerk of Course or Stewards of the meeting Engines are only allowed to be started in the two allocated areas. Kart engines are not to be started in pitbay areas and not before 10am or after 6pm No fluids are to be disposed of onsite using the drains or any ground area on site. 4 1959 Hunts Kart Racing Club 12th/13th June HKRC 50th Anniversary & East Anglian Trophy Race Weekend June 12th/13th 4 Following on from the success of last years meeting as part of HKRC s 50th Anniversary celebrations, this years East Anglian Trophy Meeting has been further improved. There will again be two full days of on track action for all classes - including a historic kart demonstrations and display area. Sponsor prizes for podium positions- Trophies awarded to 1-5 including novices and an additional Driver of the Weekend Junior and Senior. On Saturday evening there will be a marquee, licensed bar, hog roast and entertainment. Class entries will be limited to 34 to ensure excellent track time and value for money. Weekend Race Format: Friday 11th June- Gates OPEN 9am Scrutineering 4.30pm- 7.30pm Signing on 4pm Saturday 12 th JUNE Scrutineering 7.30am -9am Signing on 7.30am-8.45am Drivers Briefing 9.30am Junior Raffle Draw 3 practice sessions for each class 10am (non control tyres) Qualifying (10 mins per class- Control tyres will be marked after each session including all karts to be weighed) Heat 1 (8 mins + 1 lap) SPELLFAME SPONSORED TROLLEY RACE (one driver- three pushers- relay-complete one lap of the Kimbolton circuit) Sunday 13 th june Drivers briefing 9.30am Senior Raffle Draw 3 lap warm up session for each class Heat 2 (8 mins + 1 lap) Pre-final (10 mins + 1 lap) Grand Final (12 mins + 1 lap- additional time added depending on race schedule) Prestigious East Anglian Trophy class trophies, and a perpetual shield for class winners up for grabs! All inclusive entry fee of 80 (including East Anglian Trophy race weekend memento) This really is great value for money a total of 65 minutes + 4 laps of competitive track action!! 26 1959 Hunts Kart Racing Club 12th/13th June HKRC Championships Round Round 4 9th May 26 Sunday dawned bright and breezy for HKRC s May meeting. A full day s racing was guaranteed, the race programme enhanced by the visit of drivers in the 210 Challenge. Once again, the timed format of the meeting gave plenty of track time with ten lap heats and seventeen lap finals the typical order of the day. The junior classes in particular provided some amazingly close finishes. Cadet Libre and Honda Cadet: In Cadet Libre Ross Gunn led Connor Jupp, Lewis Taylor, and Ellis Hanks for the first couple of laps. Third time round at the Bus Stop, Jupp went for the lead and Gunn trying to hang on, ended up on the grass which dropped him back to fourth. Taylor moved ahead of Hanks a lap later and sat in Jupp s wheel tracks. Gunn was by now recovering his composure taking third from Hanks and then going past Taylor to challenge for the lead again. With this leading trio circulating nose to tail, any one of them could win it and with three laps to go Taylor was back in second place. In a frantic dash to the line, Taylor won by a nosecone from Jupp who was a similar distance ahead of Gunn! William Pettit won the novice trophy. Honda saw a race long battle between Aaron Drury and Harrison Huggan settled on the line in Drury s favour by one hundredth of a second! Novice Rory Hudson drove a great race, but was just pipped to third place by James Hillery. Junior TKM: Another closely contested race saw Alex Nuttall leading Tom Seddon and Liam Murray off the line. Murray was quickly past Seddon and close to the leader s rear bumper. Meanwhile Jack Partridge was making rapid progress thought the field and by half distance was closing in on the leading pair. Sweeping past both Murray and Nuttall on successive laps, Partridge went on to win. Nuttall and Murray continued their battle right to the line with Nuttall just making it home in second. Matthew Hayes won the Novice trophy. Mini Max: Luke Hughes led all but two laps of the Mini Max final, one of which proved to be very important. James Webb was initially second, but he was overtaken by Jai Nijjar and Brett Ward on lap two. Hughes now led by a narrow margin from Nijjar, Ward and Webb with Harry Smith and Ben Matthews close behind. By half distance, Ward had had enough of watching the karts in front of him and made his move for the lead. This gave Hughes a wakeup call and he was back in front a lap later. Webb had now got the wind behind him and demoted Nijjar to third. Going onto the last lap Webb took second from Ward at Stow and then got a great run to the line to snatch the win from Hughes by one hundredth of a second. Junior Rotax: Liam Ferguson and Jean-Luke Laister beat Bobby Neil to the first corner, but Neil was soon into second and in a couple more laps took over at the front. Ferguson wasn t going to take this lying down and he tried to squeeze his kart down the inside at the Bus Stop. Neil kept the power on leaving Ferguson on the outside of the right hander and suddenly heading to the grass behind the marshal s post. He returned to the track in sixth. Now Neil had to work to keep Laister behind him. With three laps left, Laister made a late move at Stow. Neil tried to fend him off, but he ended up in the tyre wall and out of the race. Chad Shiner was now closing on the leader, and a huge effort on the drag to the line just failed to pay off, Laister winning by six hundredths of a second. Ferguson recovered to take the last podium position. Ashley Wilson won the Novice trophy. 210 Challenge: Lee Plain had been unstoppable all day and his dominance continued in the final. Leading from start to finish, he cruised home with a nine second winning margin. Dan Bury had made a great start to run second, but his race came to a premature end early on. Neil Hancock made it past Neil Callaghan by lap four to claim the runner up spot with Matt Cardwell moving into third. Senior Rotax: Craig Hook and Adam Shepherd emerged ahead of the field as the front row men lost out on the run down to Stow. Andy Foskett, James Corpe and Peter Masters were also in the picture, pitching into the top five. From his mid-grid start, Andrew Winter emerged as a force to be reckoned with. He gradually picked off the top places moving into the lead with one lap to go. Hook had to settle for second and Corpe ended up third. Thomas Lamb recovered from a setback on lap eight to snatch the Novice trophy from Justin Harwood s grasp by seven hundredths of a second! Rotax 177 Masters: Steve Sawford was straight into a lead that no one was able to take off him. Martin Reader did his best to press Sawford into a mistake, but the leader was always able to respond. Martin Gadd kept Wayne Smithers behind

However with Reader excluded during post-race scrutineering, Smithers was promoted to second and Gadd to third. Nigel Geraghty won the Novice trophy. Gearbox 125 and 250: Chris Thexton was first away in 125, but polesitter Stephen Lane made a poor start and saw several karts go past him. Lane s race then came to an abrupt end at Hanger without him completing a single lap. This was singularly disappointing as he was the only one who looked capable of giving Richard Palmer a run for his money. Palmer was duly soon into the lead and his main problem from thereon was dealing with backmarkers. After his fast start, Thexton had an easy run to second, whilst Dane Smith got things together as the race progressed and made it past Andrew Brunton to take third. In the 250 class, Adam Tanner looked set to romp away, but he came to a halt on lap twelve leaving Ron Stamp to inherit the win. Stamp lapped the whole of the 250 field such was his pace, with Nicholas Flint the best of the rest followed by Vernon Whitaker. Rotax 177 and TKM Extreme: In 177, Lee Torrie set out on what looked set to be another dominating performance, but Andrew Gosling had different ideas and having passed Matt Barnes was soon challenging for the lead. Success was achieved at half distance and despite Torrie s best efforts to reverse the positions; Gosling was first over the line for a well deserved win. Scott Clee dropped down the order on lap one, but worked his way back to finish third. Guy Bowden took the Novice trophy. TKM Extreme was an unusually processional affair. Sam Grogan was seemingly having an off day and he retired just after half distance. Michael Cornell was already well ahead by this time, so Shaun Abbott had to be content with second and novice John Stafford finished third. 31 Hunts Kart Racing Club 12th/13th June 1959 Screwball Express This B-17G Flying Fortress - came off the assembly line of Boeing s Seattle, Washington plant on January 30, 1944 and was accepted by the United States Army Air Corps the following day. Serial number was painted on its vertical stabilizer. After armament, it was delivered to the 379th Bomb Group at Kimbolton, on March 23, 1944, and was assigned to the 526th Bomb Squadron was code-named Mystic M for Mike and its original crew named it Screwball Express. Its nose art consisted of a white cumulus cloud, with the letters in it name appearing thereon in a variety of bright colors. A large baseball was painted on the lower corner of the cloud and in its center a bright red screw. Screwball Express received its unique name because it s baseball-loving crew believed that with the capabilities of this sophisticated, heavily armored aircraft, it could deliver a screwball pitch the enemy would be incapable of hitting and that it would do so with express dispatch. 31 Screwball Express suffered a lot during its career in the war. Many times the aircraft came back from missions riddled with bullet holes and flak damage. It was flak that caused the demise of Screwball Express on its 118th mission, when it was shot down by three close flak bursts at Bellheim on a mission to Ingolstadt, Germany on 5th April 1945.

32 1959 Hunts Kart Racing Club 12th/13th June Ol Gappy Ol Gappy was one of the most famous B-17 s of World War 2. Serial number WA-H and assigned to the 379th BG, 524th Bomb Squadron on 20th January 1944, it holds the record in the 8th Air Force for the aircraft with the most missions 157 in total. 32 The plane was originally called Topper and the nose art was of a ghost in a top hat and white gloves. However the name Ol Gappy was applied to the chin turret as a tribute to the ground crew chief who had a gap between his front teeth! Many crews flew this plane which despite being shot down several times, and returning home full of holes and battle damage, still managed to make it until the end of the war. Unfortunately for Ol Gappy although it survived the war, it didn t survive the scrapman and was sent to the breakers yard in 1946.
