NOTES If you re not sure how to carry out one of the Soundbeam procedures, try out the relevant example here, in conjunction with The Soundbeam 2 Handbook Part 3 Explanations, then adapt it to your own particular needs. The numbers and pages of the relevant sections of Part 3 are quoted in brackets, at the head of each section. Use the Glossary (Soundbeam 2 Handbook Part 3 pp ) to find the meaning of any technical term you don t understand. With the exception of 2.2 To Set up a MIDI Control Chain and 3.2. To Select, Name, Record, Replay, Edit and Save a User Pitch Sequence, the individual step-by-step processes described here are not in any purposeful sequence - ie. the end of one process does not necessarily become the starting point of the next one. SOUNDBEAM is a Registered Trademark throughout Europe and the USA. 4 PART 2 STEP BY STEP - NOTES

1. SET-UPS (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations - 4. Software Structure pp and 5. Set-Ups pp 45-50) See also Appendix A Set-ups and Pitch Sequences Set-ups 01 to 31 for list of settings for each Locked Set-up To Select a Set-up Starting from the current Set-up - holding a complete collection of settings for Pitch Sequence, Range, Division, Trigger Mode, Transpose and MIDI Utilities assigned to each of the 12 Sensors (4 Beams and 8 Switches) - say, the default Set-up Set-up: 001 P Echoes Press Set-up Slct Set-up: 001 P Echoes Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select a new Set-up No. - say Set-up No. 025 Slct Set-up: 025P Science Fiction 6 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT A SET-UP

Note. At this point and until Enter is pressed all the settings assigned by the original Set-up, in this case Set-up No. 001 Echoes will still be operative. Now, press Enter, the Display will show Set-up: 025 P Science Fiction and the newly selected Set-up with its different collection of settings for Sensor, Pitch Sequence, Range, Divisions, Trigger Mode, Transpose and MIDI Utilities will replace the previous one. Note A. When Enter is pressed to activate the new Set-up, any modifications you may have made to the settings of the original Set-up are lost, and replaced by the default settings for that Set-up. B. The letters P (or L in later versions) and U after the Set-up No. denote Locked (preset) or User Set-ups. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT A SET-UP 7

1.2. To Save a Set-up This is used if you want to preserve the alterations you have made to settings of a User Set-up. So, starting from whichever Set-up (say, Set-up No 47) and Sensor (say, Beam 1) you have selected, and the key page* for the default settings you wish to change (say, Divisions), the screen will show, say - Divisions for: Beam 1 32 *The key page is the screen page shown when one of the keys is pressed, or the page subsequently reached when the Page Left or Page Right Keys are used. Press and hold down Enter The screen will show Set-up: 047 M User Set-up Note. The M after the Set-up number shows that some of the Set-up s settings have been modified, but not yet Saved - and are thus liable to be lost and replaced by the original default settings if another Set-up is selected and Enter is pressed or Soundbeam is switched off 8 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SAVE A SET-UP

then - still holding down Enter press Set-up and release both Save Set-up 47 TO Set-up 47 (At this point, when you have pressed Enter and Set-up, you can check on the name of the Set-up you are Saving by pressing Page Right once - then press Page Left to return to the Save process) Press Enter again and the Screen will ask Save 47 to 47? Enter to accept_ PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SAVE A SET-UP 9

Press Enter once more and the Screen will return to Set-up: 047 U User Set-up Note. The U now replacing M after the Set-up No. shows that the alterations you have made to the default settings of this User Set-up have now been Saved - and have become the new default settings. 10 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SAVE A SET-UP

1.3. To Copy the Modified Settings of a Locked Set-up to a User Set-up Perhaps you have been using a Locked Set-up during your current Soundbeam session, and have made a number of changes to the settings - for Sensor, Pitch Sequence, Range and so on - to suit your purpose. You would now like to preserve this modified Set-up - the default Set-up No. 001 Echoes, perhaps, but with the changes to settings you have made - for re-use at a later date. But the Set-up you have chosen is one of the 30 Locked Set-ups (Nos ), which will revert to their Locked default settings if another Set-up is entered, or whenever Soundbeam is switched off and then powered up again. To preserve the altered settings of your current Locked Set-up, you will need to copy the whole Set-up (with the modified settings) to one of the User Set-ups (Nos ). So, once again, start from the last key page of the Locked Set-up (in this case Set-up No 001 Echoes ) and Sensor (Beam 1), in which you have modified the settings - say, Transpose - when the display might show, say Transpose for Beam 1-14 Press Enter and hold down Warning. After modifying a default setting, be careful not to press Set-up before pressing Enter - since pressing Set-up first and then pressing Enter will cause all the modifications you have made to be lost and replaced by the original default settings. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO COPY THE MODIFIED SETTINGS OF A LOCKED SET-UP TO A USER DEFINABLE SET-UP 11

Next, with Enter still held down, press Set-up The Display will show Save Set-up 001 TO Set-up 001 Release both then, use the Rotary Control Wheel to select a User Set-up No. to Save the current settings to say, Set-up No. 067 Save Set-up 001 TO Set-up 067 press Enter again 12 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO COPY THE MODIFIED SETTINGS OF A LOCKED SET-UP TO A USER DEFINABLE SET-UP

The Display will ask Save 001 to 67? Enter to accept _ press Enter a third time The Display will show Set-up: 067 U Echoes All the settings (and the name) of Set-up No Echoes - including any modifications to them you may have made are now the default settings of Set-up No 067. Since Echoes also remains the name of Locked Set-up No. 001, the new Setup 067 should be re-named. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO COPY THE MODIFIED SETTINGS OF A LOCKED SET-UP TO A USER DEFINABLE SET-UP 13

1.4. To Re-name a User Set-up Use the Set-up key and Rotary Control Wheel to select the Set-up you wish to rename say Set-up Echoes then press Enter The Display will show Set-up: 067 U Echoes Now press Set-up again Slct Set-up:067U Echoes 14 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO RE-NAME A USER SET-UP

and press Page Right The Display will show Edit name of 067 Echoes Press Enter The Display will show Edit name of 067 _ Echoes but now with a cursor in the first space of the second line. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO RE-NAME A USER SET-UP 15

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the first number, letter, symbol or space of the name you wish to give Set-up No. 067 (maximum16 characters) - say, in this case, Jane s Music Box. Note. The characters appear on the screen in the following order as the Rotary Control Wheel is turned clockwise. Blank Space Symbols! - / Numbers 0-9 Symbols : Upper Case A - Z Symbols [ - Lower Case a - z Symbols ( - < Fast or Slow Clockwise turns to < Slow Anti-clockwise turns to Blank Space Fast Anti-clockwise turns continuous loops all sections After you have selected the first number, letter, symbol or space - in this case J - the display will show Edit name of 067 J Echoes Press Page Right to move the cursor to the next space. Edit name of 067 J_ Echoes 16 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO RE-NAME A USER SET-UP

Use the Rotary Control Wheel again to select the next number, letter, symbol or space of your chosen name Edit name of 067 Ja Echoes Once more press Page Right and the cursor will again move to the next space Edit name of 067 Ja_ Echoes and so on, alternately selecting a letter number, symbol or space, and then pressing Page Right until the original name has been obliterated and replaced by the complete new name. NB. You can go back to correct or change a letter by pressing Page Left - or by cycling on round with Page Right. Edit name of 067 Janes s Music Box PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO RE-NAME A USER SET-UP 17

Now, press Enter to end Edit Save name 067? Jane s Music Box Save by pressing Enter once more The Display will now show the Set-up with its new name. Set-up: 067 U Jane s Music Box 18 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO RE-NAME A USER SET-UP

1.5. To Change the Default Set-up Starting from the key page of any Set-up - say Set-up No. 001 Echoes Press Set-up The Display will show Slct Set-up: 001 P Echoes Now press Page Left The Display will show Default Power Up Set-up no. : 001 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT SET-UP 19

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the new Default Set-up No. - say, Set-up No NB. Any Locked or User Set-up No could be selected here, as well as the setting Last, which brings up the Set-up in use when the Controller was last switched off The Display will show Default power up Set-up no.: 067 It is not necessary to press Enter. From now on, each time the Controller is powered up, Set-up No. 067 will automatically be the first Set-up to offer its settings for Sensors, Pitch Sequences, Range, Divisions, Trigger Mode, Transpose and MIDI Utilities for interpreting information from the 4 Beams and 8 Switches. This will continue to be the case each time Soundbeam is switched on, until a new default Set-up is selected. 20 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT SET-UP

SENSORS chapter 2 Switches Sensors Beams Soundbeam Controller PART 2 STEP BY STEP - 2. SENSORS 21

2. SENSORS (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations 2. Gathering Information from Movement pp Interpeting Information from Sensors and Switches pp Sensors pp ) 2.1. To Select a Sensor Start from any key page of any Set-up and Sensor - say Set-up No. 001 Echoes and Beam 1 - by pressing Sensor. In this case, the Display will show Select Sensor: Beam 1 Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select another Sensor - one of the other 3 Beams, or (if you have a Switchbox) one of the 8 Switches whose parameter settings you wish to change - say Beam No. 2 The Display will now show Select Sensor: Beam 2 From now on - until a new Sensor is selected, all changes of settings within the current Set-up, or any subsequent change of Set-up - for Pitch Sequence, Range (4 Beams only - not Switches), Divisions, Trigger Mode, Transpose, and MIDI Utilities - will be for those assigned to Beam No. 2. NB. Don t forget to check that the Sensor you have selected is actually plugged in Beams 1, 2, 3 or 4 into Soundbeam s rear panel, Switches 1 to 8 into the Switchbox, which must also be connected to the Controller. 22 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT A SENSOR

2.2. To Set up a MIDI Control Chain In this example, one of Soundbeam s two MIDI Control Chains is used to cause the sound to move between the listener s Left and Right (its Pan Position ) depending on the distance (Absolute Length) from the Sensor of any interruption of the Beam. (NB. Check that the Left and Right signal OUTPUTS from your MIDI musical instrument and your amplifier are correctly connected to the Left and Right INPUTS to your amplifier and speakers.) (For a full explanation of Soundbeams s MIDI Control Chains A and B see - Handbook Part 3 Explanations 6.3. MIDI Control Chains A and B - pp ). Four settings are needed to operate a MIDI Control Chain, and the proceedures for these are described consecutively in , , , and below To Assign a Control Source to MIDI Control Chain A Start from any key page of any Set-up and Sensor - say Set-up No. 001 Echoes and Beam 1 - by pressing Sensor The Display will show Select Sensor: Beam 1 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN 23

Now press Page Left The Display will show Beam 1 Ctrl A FROM Gate The top line of the Display indicates a. the Sensor from which control information is to be derived - and b. which of the two MIDI Control Chains (A or B) is selected for this purpose. The second line indicates which type of information from the Sensor is being used as the Control Source in this case the default is Gate (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations Sources of Control Information p 57) Now use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the desired Control Source in this case, say, Abs Length Beam 1 Ctrl A FROM Abs Length 24 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN

To Assign a Control Destination to MIDI Control Chain A Press Page Left again This time, the second line of the Display shows the current destination of the MIDI Control Chain information the function it will be used to affect selected from the possibilities offered by turning the Rotary Control Wheel. In this case the default assignment is No Controller. (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations MIDI Controllers and Expressive Modifications not listed as MIDI Controllers p. 58) Beam 1 Ctrl A TO No Controller Now use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the desired destination for control information - Pan Position - No 010 The Display will show Beam 1 Ctrl A TO Pan Pos 010 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN 25

To Assign a Control Depth setting to MIDI Control Chain A In order to define the extent of the variation in the Pan Position between Left and Right - under the control of Absolute Length - we might set the Control Depth to about half its full potential. (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations Control Chain Settings iii. Control Depth p. 56) So, from the last screen, press Page Left again The Display will show the default setting Beam 1 Ctrl A Ctrl Depth This setting, 001 (variable between Off and +/- 100) means that controlling the Pan Position from Absolute Length will have practically no effect at all. So use the Rotary Control Wheel to increase the setting to, say, Beam 1 Ctrl A Ctrl Depth PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN

Finally To Assign a Minimum Control setting to MIDI Control Chain A The Control Minimum sets the minimum value that MIDI Control Chain A can impose on the MIDI function currently selected as the Control Destination. A Control Minimum setting of 000 allows movements in the Beam to select from the whole range of 128 possible values for the MIDI function under control. As the Control Minimum setting increases, the smaller the spread of possible values becomes, until finally, a Control Minimum setting of 127 allows only a single value for the Control Destination. (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations Control Chain Settings iv. Control Minimum p. 56) Press Page Left once more Beam 1 Ctrl A Ctrl minimum 064 then use the Rotary Control Wheel to change the setting to 000 Beam 1 Ctrl A Ctrl minimum 000 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SET UP A MIDI CONTROL CHAIN 27

Note. With these settings for MIDI Control Chain A, the nearer the interruptions of the Beam is to the Sensor, the further to the right (of the facing listener) the sounds will be - and vice versa. To reverse this effect, it is simply necessary to invert the settings for Control Depth (from +064 to -064) and move the Control Minimum from 000 to a high number, say, 100. Now, any interruption of the Beam moving nearer to the Sensor causes the sounds to be heard moving further to the left. 28 PART 2 STEP BY STEP

Try it out by moving your hand in the Beam From now on, until you change it again, or another Set-up is selected, or until Soundbeam is switched off, Pitch Sequence No. 016 Blues Scale - will be continue to be assigned to Beam 1 in this Set-up. However, if another Set-up is selected, or Soundbeam is switched off, Pitch Sequence No. 016 Blues Scale will be replaced as the default Pitch Sequence for Beam 1 in this Set-up (No. 001) by the original default Pitch Sequence - PitchSeq: 005 Major Triad +6th PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO CHANGE THE PITCH SEQUENCE ASSIGNED TO THE CURRENT SENSOR 31

3.2. To Select, Name, Record, Replay, Edit and Save a User Pitch Sequence The next 10 sections ( to pp ) can be taken either individually, or as a continuous series for defining, editing and saving a new User Pitch Sequence To Select a User Pitch Sequence Starting from any key page of any Set-up and Sensor for this example, say, Set-up No. 001 Echoes and Beam 1 Press Pitch Sequence In this case, the Display will show the default Locked Pitch Sequence for Beam 1 in Set-up No which is PitchSeq: 005 Major Triad +6th Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select one of the User Pitch Sequences - say, No. 040 PitchSeq 040 Chromatic Scale Chromatic Scale is the default Pitch Sequence assigned to all Pitch Sequences not yet redefined by the user. 32 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

To Name the New Pitch Sequence Next, choose a name (maximum 16 letters) for the selected Pitch Sequence - say Scottish Fiddler - Press Page Right Edit name of 040 Chromatic Scale Now press Enter The Display will show Edit name of 040 Chromatic Scale PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 33

with the Cursor now underlining the first letter of the current name Use the Rotary Control Wheel to select the first letter or number of the new name - Scottish Fiddler Note. The characters appear on the screen in the following order as the Rotary Control Wheel is turned clockwise. Blank Space Symbols! - / Numbers 0-9 Symbols : Upper Case A - Z Symbols [ - Lower Case a - z Symbols ( - < Fast or Slow Clockwise turns to < Slow Anti-clockwise turns to Blank Space Fast Anti-clockwise turns continuous loops all sections Edit name of 040 Shromatic Scale Press Page Right and the cursor will move to the next position Edit name of 040 Shromatic Scale 34 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

Edit Name of 040 Scottish Fiddler PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 35

Now press Enter and the Display will ask Save name 040? Scottish Fiddler Press Enter once more This will return you to the current Set-up, the Display will show Set-up: 001 M Echoes and the new name for Pitch Sequence No. 40 will have been Saved as Scottish Fiddler. (You can check by pressing Pitch Sequence) Note. The M on the screen after the Set-up No. means that this Set-up is in the process of being modified. 36 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

To Select the Pitch Sequence Type Next, a choice must be made between two possible kinds of Sequence - Sequences of Pitches (MIDI notes), or Sequences of MIDI Programs - the different sounds available in your MIDI musical instrument (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations Sequence Type Select p 65). While Sequences of MIDI Programs may occasionally be used, Sequences of Pitches will be the normal choice. If you haven t already done so, press Pitch Sequence (Illus) - and the Display will show PitchSeq: 040 Scottish Fiddler PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 37

Next press Page Right twice (x2) and the Display will show the Sequence Type page with the default setting Pitch Sequence. Sequence Type: Pitch Sequence While the Rotary Control Wheel could be used to select the alternative Sequence Type, Program Sequence, in fact, the default setting Pitch Sequence is the type of sequence we want here - so, for the purpose of this example, the setting need not be altered. 38 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

To Record the Notes of Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler A Pitch Sequence consists of up to 64 single notes or 2-, 3- or 4-part chords - or a mixture of both. The example, Scottish Fiddler, has 22 note/chords, and is given in here in musical notation. PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 SCOTTISH FIDDLER Divisions. Each of the notes or chords of a Pitch Sequence is assigned to one of the (up to) 64 equal Divisions into which the length (Range) of each Beam can be divided - ie. up to 64 slots to each of which one of the note/chords of a Pitch Sequence can be assigned. (See Handbook Part 3 Explanations - 8. Divisions pp 67-83) BEAM divided into 64 DIVISIONS PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 SCOTTISH FIDDLER PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 "SCOTTISH FIDDLER" DIVISIONS BEAM divided into 22 DIVISIONS PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 39

The simplest way of recording the note/chords of a new Pitch Sequence is by using Record Division (accessed via the Pitch Sequence key) to play them into the Soundbeam Controller from a MIDI Keyboard. For this, you will need to connect MIDI Lead B - supplied with all Soundbeam 2 Kits - between the keyboard s MIDI Out socket and Soundbeam Controller s MIDI In socket. MIDI OUT MIDI IN B Note. The names of the notes - A 2, C#5, Eb3 and so on - are used in accordance with the current international convention. However, in Soundbeam 2 s screen displays, all accidentals - ie.notes with added sharps (#) or flats (b) which denote the raising or lowering of the pitch by one semitone - are written as sharps (#) of the next note below. C 3 (D 3) / D 3 (E 3) / F 3 (G 3) / G 3 (A 3) / A 3 (B 3) C 3 (MIddle C) / D 3 / E 3 / F 3 / G 3 / A 3/ /B 3 / C 4 40 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

So, from Sequence Type: Pitch Sequence press Page Right three times (x3) to reach the Record Division page Note. A succession of either Page Right or Page Left key presses gives access to a continuous circle of Key Pages. The total of 5 consecutive presses of Page Right used in this example to reach Record Division would if starting from Pitch Sequence Select, be replaced by the more direct 2 presses of Page Left. The Display shows Record Divisn 01 C 0: : : : with the single MIDI note 024 (C 0). This is Division 01 of the 64 Divisions of User Pitch Sequence No. 017 Chromatic Scale - the default Pitch Sequence assigned in the factory to all User Set-ups. This is now about to be replaced by the MIDI Note Nos of the new Pitch Sequence. Note the cursor under the Division No. Note. If the Pitch Sequence you are replacing with the new one is a User Pitch Sequence (Nos ), make sure that this is not the only copy - or, if it is, that you are content to lose it (or the current version of it) from your library of available Pitch Sequences. Using Record Division, the first note you enter from the MIDI keyboard deletes all the subsequent Divisions of the previous Pitch Sequence, together with their matching note/chords. Any alteration you make to a User Pitch Sequence applies immediately to the original in the library - and to all copies of it assigned to any Sensor in any Set-up. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 41

PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 "SCOTTISH FIDDLER" DIVISIONS NOTE NAMES D 3 A 2 G 2 D 2 A 3 G 3 F 3 E 4 D 3 D 4 E 3 C 4 F 3 A 4 G 4 F 4 E 4 D 4 G 3 A 2 D 2 C 4 F 3 A 2 E 2 F 3 A 3 D 3 G 2 C 2 G 3 D 3 A 2 D 2 C 3 E 3 D 3 G 2 A 2 D 2 A 2 C 1 D 2 A 1 D BEAM divided into 22 DIVISIONS So now use your MIDI keyboard to play 1, 2, 3 or, as in this for example, 4 notes into Division 01 of the new Pitch Sequence - simultaneously, if you are a reasonably accomplished keyboard player, otherwise, one by one, starting with the lowest note and holding it down as you add (and hold down) each of the 2, 3 or 4 subsequent ones. They will replace the note(s) assigned to this Division by the previous Pitch Sequence. D 2:G 2:A 2:D 3: Record Divisn 01 D 2:G 2:A 2:D 3: When you play one or more notes on the keyboard - for as long as you hold these keys down - the Display will show the names of the notes you are playing. Note. If the notes of a chord are spread - ie. played nearly but not quite simultaneously - the screen will show the names of the notes in the order in which they were played. This will make no difference to the sound of the chord. 42 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

As soon as you lift your fingers from these keyboard notes, the Division No. will change to the next one - Division 02. Record Divisn 02 : : : : This time, Division 02 s 4 spaces will be blank - ready to accept your next keyboard contribution of 1, 2, 3 or 4 simultaneous notes. Note. From now on, a Division left vacant - unrecorded - will mark the end, for the moment, of the Pitch Sequence, and any attempt to use the Rotary Control Wheel to scroll on will simply result in cycling through the Divisions already recorded up to that point. Now play the second note or chord of the new Pitch Sequence on the keyboard A 3 Record Divisn 02 A 3: : : : As fast as you play the 1, 2, 3 or 4 simultaneous notes for each new Division - and lift your fingers from the keys - the screen will change to the next Division No. Record Divisn 03 : : : : G 3: : : : Record Divisn 03 G 3: : : : PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 43

and so on, until you have entered all 22 single note/chords of the new Pitch Sequence No Scottish Fiddler when the the Display will show Record Divisn 23 : : : : Note. Pitch Sequences will only hold as many note/chords as are played in. In this example, leaving Division 23 vacant - unrecorded - will mark the end, for the moment, at any rate, of the 22 note/chords Pitch Sequence No Scottish Fiddler. NB. If, at this point, you want to Save the new Pitch Sequence, press Pitch Sequence and follow instructions in To Save the New Pitch Sequence (pp below). Don t press Exit - you will simply lose all your new data To Replay the new Pitch Sequence At any point in the Pitch Sequence recording process described in the previous section, you may wish to hear what you have done so far, in order to get some idea of how successfully you are realising your intentions. And finally, when the whole of the new Pitch Sequence has been entered using the Record Division page, you will want to listen carefully to what you have recorded, to judge whether it s as you intended - or whether it might be improved in any way. In either case, from the final screen of the Record Division process to date, say, Record Divisn 23 : : : : 44 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

Press Page Right to reach the Replay Division page Replay Divisn 01 Enter to play! Now press Enter and the note or chord assigned to Division 01 will be heard. Hold down the Enter key while using the Rotary Control Wheel to scroll slowly backwards and forwards (and cyclically - round and round) through the 22 Divisions of Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 45

As you do this, the Display will show Replay Divisn 01 Enter to play! Replay Divisn 02 Enter to play! Replay Divisn 03 Enter to play! and so on - as you turn the Rotary Control Wheel (holding down Enter) and the relevant note is sounded. Listen carefully and decide whether a. the new sequence is as you wish - in which case you can go ahead and Save it, by the procedure described below in To Save the New Pitch Sequence - Scottish Fiddler (pp below) or b. major alterations are needed, and it will be easier to record the whole of the new Pitch Sequence again, in which case press Page Left and repeat the operations described in To Record the Notes etc (pp 39-44). or c. only a few small alterations are needed - so you can use a combination of Delete Division, Insert Division and Record Division to put matters right, as in the following example. Minor Alterations to the New Pitch Sequence In this example, let us suppose that when the new Pitch Sequence is replayed, it turns out that the following minor alterations are needed. i. An extra Division - Division No with the note A 3 assigned to it, has been recorded by mistake (easy to do using a MIDI keyboard), giving a total number of 23 note/chords assigned to 23 Divisions instead of the originally intended 22, and must be deleted. ii. One of the notes of the chord assigned to Division 15 needs to be changed And, finally, the new sequence could be improved by the insertion of a chord after Division 4 - so 46 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

iii. Insert a new Division 5 to give a 23-note Pitch Sequence iv. Delete Divisn 13 B3: : : : The total number of Divisions with notes or chords assigned to them in Pitch Sequence No. 40 will now be reduced from 23 to the originally intended 22. NB. DON T try to use the Save procedure from the Delete Division page without first pressing Pitch Sequence - and be careful not to press Enter at this point since it will simply cause another Division to be deleted. Pressing Exit will cause you to lose the newly recorded data. Once you are in the Pitch Sequence No. Select page (main page - Page Right x 4) you can safely press and hold down Enter to initiate the procedure to Save the changes you have made. 51 To Alter notes assigned to a Pitch Sequence Division An alternative method for defining the individual note/chords of a Pitch Sequence uses Record Division with the Rotary Control Wheel, Enter, Page Right and Page Left to define the pitches one by one. More accurate and less accident prone than using a MIDI keyboard though rather more cumbersome - it will be used here and in section To Assign a Note or Chord to a Single Division using Record Division. So from Delete Divisn 13 B3: : : : Press Page Right twice (x2) to reach the Record Division Page The Display will show the Division No. when Delete Division page was quitted for the current Record Division page, say Record Divisn 13 D 2:E 3:A 3:A 2: PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 51

Use the Rotary Control Wheel to move to Division 15, in which one of the constituent notes of the chord G 2 - is to be altered to A#2 Record Divisn 15 C 2:G 2:D 3:A 3: Now press Enter The cursor will move to the first pitch of Division 15 Record Divisn 15 C 2:G 2:D 3:A 3: 52 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

Press Page Right to reach the note to be altered Record Divisn 15 C 2:G 2:D 3:A 3: now use Rotary Control Wheel to select the new note Record Divisn 15 C 2:A# 2:D 3:A 3: And press Enter to return the cursor to the Division No. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 53

Record Divisn 15 C 2:A# 2:D 3:A 3: Use the Replay Division page to check this alteration by pressing Page Right, and listening to the new chord. PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 "SCOTTISH FIDDLER" Alteration II (after) - 22 note version NOTE NAMES D 3 A 2 G 2 D 2 A 3 G 3 F 3 E 4 D 3 D 4 E 3 C 4 F 3 A 4 G 4 F 4 E 4 D 4 G 3 A 2 D 2 C 4 F 3 A 2 E 2 F 3 A 3 D 3 A 2 C 2 G 3 D 3 A 2 D 2 C 3 E 3 D 3 G 2 A 2 D 2 D 2 A 2 A 1 C 1 D BEAM divided into 22 DIVISIONS 54 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

Alteration III. Add a new Division No 5 to the 22 note Pitch Sequence No. 40 PITCH SEQUENCE No. 040 "SCOTTISH FIDDLER" Alteration III (before) - 22 note version NOTE NAMES D 3 A 2 G 2 D 2 A 3 G 3 F 3 E 4 D 3 D 4 E 3 C 4 F 3 A 4 G 4 F 4 E 4 D 4 G 3 A 2 D 2 C 4 F 3 A 2 E 2 F 3 A 3 D 3 A 2 C 2 G 3 D 3 A 2 D 2 C 3 E 3 D 3 G 2 A 2 D 2 D 2 A 2 A 1 C 1 D BEAM divided into 22 DIVISIONS To Insert a Division into a Pitch Sequence In order to insert a new Division into a Pitch Sequence, the Division No selected for this procedure should be the one the new insert will displace. In this case, selecting Division No. 05 means that a new Division No. 5 will be inserted between the present Division No. 05 and No. 04. The present Division No. 05 will then be moved forward in the current Pitch Sequence with the note/chord assigned to it - to become Division No. 06. The notes of the previous Division No. 05 (now No. 06) will be copied in the new No. 05. NB. Since the maximum number of note/chords which can be Saved in a Pitch Sequence is 64, a Pitch Sequence which already contains 64 note/chords will be unable to accept the insertion of any more Divisions. PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 55

So from Replay Divisn 15 C 2:A 2:G 3:D 4: Press Page Left twice (x2) to reach Insert Divisn 15 C_ 2:A#2:D_3:A_3: and use Rotary Control Wheel to scroll to Insert Divisn 05 D 3:E 4: : : 56 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

Alteration III, after NOTE NAMES D 3 A 2 G 2 D 2 A 3 G 3 F 3 E 4 D 3 E 4 D 3 D 4 E 3 C 4 F 3 A 4 G 4 D 2 A 1 D BEAM divided into 23 DIVISIONS Div 03 Div 04 Div 05 Div 06 Div 07 Notes G 3 F#3 E 4 E 4 D 4 Assigned D 3 D 3 E 3 Divisions 03, 04, 05 are unchanged. Division 05 and the notes assigned to it have been copied to the new Division 06, and the notes assigned to the old Division 06 have moved on to Division 07 - and so on. The total number of Divisions in Pitch Sequence No. 040 has been increased by 1 from 22 to 23. Using Record Division, it will now be a simple matter to replace D 3, E 4 in the new Division 05 with the intended E 3, D 3. NB. As with Delete Division, DON T try to use the Save procedure from the Insert Division page, since pressing Enter at this point will simply cause another Division to be inserted. If you want to Save it at this point, press Pitch Sequence, after which you can safely press and hold down Enter followed by Pitch Sequence to Save the changes you have made. 58 PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE

The M after the Set-up number means that the Set-up has been modified in some way, but that this modified Set-up has not been Saved. It warns the user that when Soundbeam is switched off, the modification(s) will be lost. The modification referred to in this case is the assignment of Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler - Beam 1 to Set-up No. 001 Echoes in place of the original default Locked Pitch Sequence No. 005 Major Triad + 6th Because Set-up No. 001 Echoes - is one of the 30 Locked Set-ups (Nos ), the next time Soundbeam is switched off and then powered up again, Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler will have been replaced by the default Locked Pitch Sequence No. 005 Major Triad + 6th as the Pitch Sequence assigned to Beam 1 in this Set-up. However, the newly defined User Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler will still be in your Soundbeam Controller s library of 100 Pitch Sequences, and available for temporary or default assignment to any - or all - of the Beams or Switches in any Set-up you might be working with. It could also now be assigned to a Sensor (Beam or Switch) as part of another Set-up - for example the User Set-up No. 067 re-named Jane s Music Box in the example shown above in 1. SET-UPS. 73 And as pressing the Pitch Sequence key will demonstrate Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler has now been assigned as the default setting for Beam 2 in Set-up No. 067 Jane s Music Box. Note. The U after the Set-up No. means that any modifications made to Set-up No. 043 Jane s Music Box have been saved, and will be the new default settings the next time Soundbeam is powered up again. From now on, until this setting is changed, every time Soundbeam is powered up afresh, Pitch Sequence No. 040 Scottish Fiddler will be assigned to Beam 2 in Set-up No. 067 Jane s Music Box as well, of course, as being stored in Soundbeam s library of Pitch Sequences - ready to be assigned to any one SENSOR - or several SENSORS - or even all 12 SENSORS in any one SET-UP - or several SET-UPS - or even all 128 SETUPS PART 2 STEP BY STEP TO SELECT, NAME, RECORD, REPLAY, EDIT AND SAVE A USER PITCH SEQUENCE 73
