1 West Potomac Softball Tryout Plan and Criteria 2015 Times might change due to allocated times and space restrictions 1. Overview: Tryouts for both the varsity and junior varsity teams will start on Monday, February 23 and are conducted together. Tryouts are open and available to all students that meet the VHSL eligibility criteria. The criteria are printed on the front of the physical form. The physical form as well as other forms can be found on the WPHS website Please BRING WARM CLOTHES. We will attempt to complete selection of the varsity and junior varsity teams by Friday, February 27. All students are eligible for the varsity team. Only freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible for the junior varsity team. Because of wet field and weather conditions, we may be inside for tryouts, but if the opportunity presents itself we may go outside so please be prepared with warm clothing. Once times are set for tryouts / practices, you will need to make arrangements for your time leading up to the practice. You may not hang out in the hallways. Your options are to go home, to the library or study hall, or after school help with a teacher. If none of these are an option, we will help find a place for you to go. We anticipate as many as 35 students trying out this year. Please wear a plain white T-shirt with your assigned number (large [6 ] front and back) which can be found in the group list attached. Please do not miss any days of tryouts or you may hurt your chances of making the team. Wolverine Softball Coaching Staff: Craig Maniglia Head Coach Lee Harrington Assistant Don Minnis Assistant Hannah O Neil Assistant Kim Rathje Assistant Kara Weiner Assistant Julie Treherne Assistant 2. Do not buy equipment until you have made the team. 3 Tryout Plan: for indoor tryout: WE ARE ANTICIPATING AN INSIDE TRYOUT Monday, 2/23: We will meet in the hallway outside of the wrestling room (near Exit 6) at 6:30. You need to be checked in with any last minute paperwork submitted, and know your assigned tryout group before 7:00 (there is a group listing attached with this document). Players should come prepared with any equipment they desire to use for tryouts bats, gloves, etc. As well as a white T-shirt with the number assigned in the attached group list. We will provide gloves and bats if you do not have your own. Tryouts on day 1 and 2 will consist of 3 evaluation stations for all athletes: 1) hitting in the batting cage; 2) timed running; 3) infield drills; and outfield drills. Each athlete will be graded on these skills by one or more of the Varsity and JV coaches. The same coach or coaches will be at the same station throughout the first day of tryouts in order to provide a consistent evaluation and grading of each player trying out. At approximately 9:00 all athletes will be finished for the first day of tryouts. Group leaders will be the last to be evaluated in each group and will bring the scoring sheets to the next station. Once a group has completed the tryout at a station, they will move to the next station, as a group, and continue the tryout evaluation. In addition to skills, all players will be evaluated on hustle, attitude, enthusiasm, teamwork, preparation, and knowledge of the game at all tryout stations and throughout the duration of the tryouts. In some cases these factors may determine whether or not you make the team.
