1 THE CONCRETE HORSESHOE 2011 Southeast Student Conference Concrete Horseshoes Competition 1. Each team must construct up to 8 concrete horseshoes conforming to the following requirements. 2. There will be no weight limits on the horseshoes; however, additional points will be awarded based on weight and durability. All shoes must weigh within 0.2 lbs of each other. 3. The shoe must fit in an 8x8 box and may not exceed a thickness of 1.5. The opening of the shoe must not exceed 3.5. All shoes must be the same size. 4. Shoes not meeting these requirements shall not be used in the competition and all games pitched with illegal shoes shall be forfeited. All horseshoes used by a team will be checked prior to the event and at any time during the event to verify that they are legal. A judge will do this checking. 5. Materials No mesh or metal wire reinforcement of any kind will be allowed. This does not limit the use of discrete (individual) fibers (e.g., polypropylene, PVA, carbon, glass, steel). All fibers must be less than or equal to 1.5 in length and have a length-to-diameter ratio (l/d) of greater than or equal to 30. Multiple fiber types are allowed. A fiber spec sheet(s) must be submitted at the beginning of the competition. There are no limitations of the concrete mix design. External coatings are prohibited. GROUND LEVEL COURTS 1. The horseshoes will be pitched at a distance of approximately The pitcher s box will be a 6 x 6 area at the end of each court. Contestants may pitch from any place within the 6 x 6 pitchers box. They must observe the foul lines. 3. Stakes will nominally be 1 in diameter and above the pit level and will be approximately perpendicular to pit level. It is anticipated that non-metal stakes will be used. 4. The pit will consist of sand (volleyball court) and will be 3 x 3. During the game, a contestant shall not step on, mash, or otherwise repair the sand in the pit without the consent of a judge. Repair needed because of a measured shoe or a shoe that was buried shall be handled using the same guidelines. The pit will be raked and leveled, within reason, between innings. 1

2 PLAY OF THE GAME AND VALUE OF THE SHOE Contestants and Playing Method 1. Each match, consisting of 4 innings, will be played by two schools. Within a given match, each inning must be pitched by a different student (i.e., 4 students per match). Each inning consists of four pitched shoes, two by each contestant. Students may rotate between matches. Four students for each team must be present at the beginning of each match; otherwise, the match will be forfeited and the opposing team will receive 15 durability points and 20 playing points for that round. 2. The competition will be a single elimination tournament bracket style. Seeds will be randomly selected prior to the start of the competition. 3. In case of an odd number of brackets, the team(s) meeting the following qualification(s), in order, will be offered a bye and 15 durability points and 20 playing points for that round. No team can receive more than one bye. Teams may turn down a bye and the next qualified team on the following list will be offered the bye. If no team accepts a bye, one team will be randomly selected. Lightest average shoe Highest durability points up to that round Highest playing points up to that round Randomly selected 4. The length of the game shall be 4 innings. After four innings, the team with the highest score (playing + durability) will be declared the winner. Each inning must be pitched by a different student; students can pitch in multiple matches. In the case of a tie after four innings, one student will then toss one shoe. The player with the shoe closest to the stake will be declared the winner. (The ringer beats a leaner in the tie breaker). 5. In the event that all 8 shoes for a team are broken, that team will forfeit all further matches and the bracket will be adjusted accordingly. 6. In the event that the winning team for a particular match cannot advance because all their shoes are broken, the opposing team will advance to the next round. Weight and Durability Points 1. The team with the lightest shoe (average of all shoes) will be awarded 50 points. The second lightest will receive 45 points and so on. The teams with the top ten lightest average weights will be awarded points, from 50 to 5, in increments of Twenty (20) points will be awarded if no shoes are broken or significantly cracked (Se Broken and Cracked Shoes) during each match. For each shoe broken during the match, 5 points will be deducted from the 20 points possible (minimum of 0 points). Playing Points 1. A ringer is a shoe that comes to rest encircling the stake. A straightedge touching either points or any part of the heel calks of the shoe must clear (not touch) the stake in order for a shoe to be declared a ringer. A ringer has a value of 5 points. 2

3 2. A leaner (but not a ringer) in which part of the shoe is elevated due to contact with the stake have a value of 3 points. 3. A shoe which is not a ringer or leaner but comes to rest with any portion of it within 7 of any part of the stake is a shoe in count. A shoe in count has a value of 1 point. 4. Shoe Out of Count- A shoe that comes to rest further than 7 from the stake is a shoe out of count and has no scoring value. A shoe that is declared to be a foul shoe is considered to be a shoe out of count (no matter where it comes to rest). Broken and Cracked Shoes 1. Broken Shoes a. If a shoe breaks into two or more parts when it hits the stake or lands in the pit or on another shoe, the parts shall be removed and that show will count for no points that inning. Another shoe can be pitched in its place, the following inning. If a shoe is cracked, but is obviously only held together by fibers, it will be considered broken. b. If a shoe has landed in the pit and becomes broken by having another shoe land on it, it shall be scored as it appears to lie. The judge shall either determine the scoring. c. If all shoes break, the current match will end and all remaining matches will be forfeited. 2. Cracked Shoes If a shoe is discovered to be cracked, it shall be scored as it lies. If a shoe is cracked, but is obviously only held together by fibers, it will be considered broken, but scored as it lies. Once the scoring is determined, it can be replaced. Cracked shoes may continue to be used in future innings at the judge s discretion. 3. Broken and cracked shoes can be replaced at the end of each inning, unless the maximum of 8 shoes has been reached. Delivery of Shoes 1. The student pitching first shall deliver both shoes (one at a time) and then the other contestant shall deliver both shoes (one at a time). A student may deliver the shoes from either the left or the right side of the platform, but in any one inning, both shoes must be delivered from the same platform. 2. A student shall deliver both shoes within 30 seconds. The time shall start when the student steps into the pitcher s box with the intention of pitching (as opposed to retrieving shoes or removing foreign material from the box). Position of Contestants During Delivery 1. THE PITCHER. During the entire address and release of the shoe, the pitcher must not start or step in front of the stake or out of the pitcher s box with either foot. Any physically challenged contestant must have at least some contact with the pitcher s box and distance of the stake will be to the discretion of the judge or official. 2. THE CREW. Any persons helping retrieve equipment, level pitcher s box, or removing foreign debris will remain outside the court until the end of the inning. Persons may only enter after the score has been decided upon by the judge(s). Failure to comply will result in the contestant s inning to be considered foul shoes and result in no points. 3

4 Foul Shoes A foul shoe is a shoe that was delivered in non-compliance with one of the rules of the game. 1. The following are rule violations that must be spotted and called by the assigned judge. The penalty is to declare the shoe a foul shoe. a. Any shoe pitched when the contestant has made contact with the foul line before the shoe is released. b. Any shoe pitched when the contestant has started or stepped completely outside the pitching box with either foot before releasing the shoe. c. Any shoe not delivered within the 30 second time limit. d. One shoe when a contestant has illegally stepped on the scoring area of the playing surface. When this violation occurs, the contestant shall pitch only one shoe the next inning. The second shoe shall be carried to the other end. e. Non-contestants entering the playing area while shoes are in play (until scoring has been determined) will result in no score for the inning. 2. The following occurrences are also considered foul shoes and the shoes must be removed from the pit (if they are in the scoring radius) before any more shoes are delivered. a. Any shoe which contacts the ground outside the pit before it comes to rest. b. The second shoe if the contestant changes shoes after the first shoe has been pitched. 3. A contestant s shoes shall be called foul if the contestant removes any shoe before the scoring of the shoe has been agreed upon. A judge shall be called if a decision cannot be reached. 4. Protests: If a contestant desires to make a protest, the protest shall be made to the judge at the time the problem occurs. 4
