To: Parents of Holbrook Little League The most important aspect of a Youth Organization like Holbrook Little League is the SAFETY of the children that make up the League itself. Please be aware that in accordance with State Laws and Little League International By-Laws, Holbrook Little League has long been required to do Criminal and Sex Offender Background Checks on all Adult Volunteers that interact with our children during each of our Baseball and Softball seasons. That list of Volunteers includes all Adult Board Members, Managers, Coaches & Umpires. With the new Township Ordinance requiring Criminal and Sex Offender Background checks of all Jackson Youth Organization Volunteers now in place, in addition to the new Little League mandate that both of the above required checks now be checked through a National Registry instead of a Local Registry, Holbrook Little League assures you that every step is being taken to make certain that your children will be safe from any criminal element or sex offenders while interacting with adult supervision during Holbrook Little League events. In addition to the background checks, all potential coaches, managers and umpires must attend safety and training classes and be certified to be eligible for those positions. Once Certified to Coach or Umpire, those Volunteers must then be approved by majority vote of the Holbrook Board of Directors. We take our positions seriously when you entrust your child s safety with us. And we will do everything in our power to give them the correct adult supervision at all times. We welcome all suggestions to further ensure the Safety of the children of Holbrook Little League. Thank You. Holbrook Little League Board of Directors
The Mission Statement of Holbrook Little League ( HBLL ) is: to implant firmly in children of the community the ideas of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and respect for authority, so that they may be welladjusted, stronger and happier children and will grow to be good, decent, healthy and trustworth citizens (and) all directors, officers, managers, coaches and members of the league shall bear in mind that the attainment of exceptional athletic skills or the winning of games is secondary. The molding of children into future citizens is of prime importance.
Too often, in recent times, this ethic has been ignored to the detriment of our players, coaches, umpires and spectators. In an effort to return to the ideals outlined in our mission statement, the directors of HBLL have adopted a policy of ZERO TOLERANCE regarding abusive, rude, or unsportsmanlike conduct by any player, coach, or spectator.
The ejection of any player or coach from a scheduled game or any spectator from the premises for cause is deemed to include, but is not limited to: Throwing of a helmet, bat, or other equipment in anger or with intent to injure Profanity or verbal abuse directed at any umpire, coach, player, Board Member, or other participant(s) or spectator(s), the determination of which shall be based on the umpire s, or Board Member s, best judgement. Unsolicited physical contact which would constitute assault under New Jersey State Law.
Any player, coach or spectator at HBLL who is ejected for cause, shall be suspended from his or her team s next two games and will not be allowed on the field and may not participate in any way in the games played during the time of suspension. In the event the ejected player or coach does not leave the field immediately following his or her ejection, that individual s team shall immediately forfeit the game. In the event an ejected spectator refuses to leave the premises, his or her team shall immediately forfeit the game. Refusal to vacate HBLL property will result in further action and the immediate notification of the Jackson Police Department.
In the event any player, coach or spectator who is an HBLL member serving, or who has served during the current season, a suspension under the zero tolerance policy and there is a second incident in which such player, coach or spectator is ejected by an umpire or Board Member, then such player, coach or spectator shall be banned from participating in HBLL activities for the remainder of the season, including playoffs, all-star, and fall ball games. And may, at the decision of the Board, be refused membership as a player, coach, or spectator in future seasons.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANAGERS OF EACH TEAM TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND SPECTATORS ARE AWARE OF HBLL S ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY.

RELAX Negligence claims are VERY difficult 1. Inspect and Repair the Field 2. Supervise Your Players 3. Use Proper Equipment in Good Condition 4. Give Fair Warning 5. You are a Coach, Not a Doctor 6. Avoid Conflict 7. Make Use of Available Resources
Statutory Protection for unpaid volunteer coaches that prohibits negligence claims for damages to a player, participant or spectator as a result of his acts of commission or omission arising out of and in the course of his rendering that service or assistance.
N.J.S.A. 2A:62A-6(a) No VOLUNTEER of a NON-PROFIT organization shall be liable N.J.S.A. 2A:53A-7.1(a) Coaches are NOT protected from injuries/damages due to a willful, wanton, or grossly negligent act or actions that evidence a reckless disregard for the duties imposed by the position.
EXCEPTIONS 1. You re not immune if you don t take this safety course 2. Immunity does not apply to the negligent use of a motor vehicle 3. You re not immune if you allow a game or practice without supervision. 4. These immunities do not apply to school athletic programs
Case Law Crown v Campo (1994) Pomeroy v Little League Baseball of Collingswood (1976)
Communicate with parents EARLY and OFTEN Don t rely on , text or calling is more immediate. Find out how parents wish to be reached. Ask for responses, don t assume a child will be in attendance. Follow-up if you ve received no answer. This is YOUR team. Give the parents the rules by which you intend to run your team and by which you expect them to abide.
Topics to Cover How the league works at your level (competitive vs noncompetitive, all teams make playoffs vs only some, coaches on field or not, coaches pitching or not, umpires or not, substitution rules, playing time rules don t assume they know!) Goal is education and fun, with winning secondary. Even at competitive levels it cannot be a winning over all else attitude. Only positive encouragement at the field (remind them of the zero tolerance policy). Punctuality and expected behavior.
Topics to Cover (cont.) How you will notify them of practices and games and what you expect in terms of a response. If they are dropping kids off to practice, they must be back to pick them up prior to the end of practice and parents must be reachable. Encourage them to practice drills at home. Cancellations are often last minute as the league tries to make every effort for the kids to play. What equipment the child will need and what the team will have. How to contact you.
I love watching you play!
Overemphasizing sports at the expense of sportsmanship Having different goals than your child Treating your child differently after a loss than a win Living your own athletic dream through your child Undermining the coach
Cheer everybody on the team, not just your child Model appropriate behavior Know what is suitable to discuss with the coach Know your role Be a good listener and a great encourager

1. Children are NOT miniature adults. 2. Stretching is VERY important. 3. A good warm-up is as important as stretching. 4. Children should NOT be encouraged to play through the pain. 5. Swelling with pain and limitation of motion are two signs you should NOT ignore. 6. Rest is the most powerful therapy in youth sports injuries. 7. Children who play no more than one team are at MORE risk! 8. Injuries that look like sprains in adults could be fractures in children. 9. Growth spurts can make for increased injury risk. 10. Ice is a universal first-aid treatment.

Don t leave unless instructed so everyone is accounted for. No return until 30 minutes after last lightning.
ALL thunderstorms produce lightning. Lightning strikes up to 10 miles away (thunder heard up to 6 miles). Lightning strike = permanent disability. SO Postpone if thunderstorms are imminent Plan ahead Keep an eye on the sky Listen for thunder
If caught outside: Avoid sheds, small or open shelters, dugouts, bleachers, fences, etc. Head to building or cars. Avoid open areas, trees, towers, poles.
If struck: Lightning victims do NOT carry a charge and are safe to handle. They need IMMEDIATE medical attention. Call 911 Give first aid/cpr if necessary. If possible, move victim to a safer location.
If you haven t, take a first aid/cpr class. Any doubt, have someone call 911. Apply first aid IF trained to do so. You are a coach, not a doctor. If you begin CPR, you must continue until help arrives, another qualified person takes over, or you can no longer physically do it. Don t move the player, especially if break is suspected or head trauma has occurred, unless scene is unsafe.
