Develop an Emergency Action Plan Allow student-athletes to acclimatize to heat and humidity Access to water should never be restricted Student-athletes should be encouraged to take in fluids frequently before and after practices and games Practices should be scheduled at times during the day that minimize exposure to heat and humidity Use the BUDDY SYSTEM Assign student-athletes a Buddy and have them monitor each other for signs and symptoms of heat related problems Signs of Possible Heat Stroke Altered consciousness Semi-consciousness, confused, irrational behavior Combative Headache, dizziness, weakness Hot skin with or without sweating Increased heart and breathing rates Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea 1

2 The actions taken in the first 5-10 minutes after recognizing heat stroke are critical to the student-athlete s survival! Cold water submersion cools the body the fastest! For student-athletes wearing pads, remove the pads and place the student in a plastic tub of ice and cold water Can also use a piece of plastic with ice and cold water that is held at the corners 2

3 COACHES INFORMATION MANDATORY CONCUSSION COURSE FOR HEAD VARSITY COACHES ALL 7-12 coaches (paid or volunteer) are required to view the NFHS course, Concussion in Sports before the beginning of their respective sport season. Information regarding accessing this course has been sent to your school administrator. Iowa Code Section C states, in part, Annually, each school district and nonpublic school shall provide to the parent or guardian of each student a concussion and brain information sheet, as provided by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The student and student s parent or guardian shall sign and return the concussion and brain injury information sheet to the student s school prior to the student s participation in any interscholastic activity for grades seven through twelve. 3

4 Iowa Code Section C continued If a student s coach or contest official observes signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or brain injury in an extracurricular interscholastic activity, the student shall be immediately removed from participation. A student who has been removed from participation shall not recommence such participation until the student has been evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and other brain injuries and the student has received written clearance to return to participation from the health care provider. Coach Removal Iowa law requires a student s coach who observes signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or brain injury, during any kind of participation, i.e. practices, scrimmages, contests, etc., to remove the student from participation immediately and the student shall not return until the coach, or school s designated representative, receives written clearance to return from a licensed health care provider. Contest Official Removal Iowa law requires a contest official who observes signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion or brain injury during scrimmages, contests, etc., to remove the student from participation immediately and that official, or a designated contest official at the contest/event, must receive the written clearance to return from a licensed health care provider before the student can return to participation in that contest/event, including an event that takes place over multiple days. 4

Lightning often strikes as far as 10 miles away from the storm. Each school should have a lightning safety plan, which includes knowing where teams & spectators will go and how long it will take them to get there safely. If thunder is heard, or lightning is seen, immediately suspend the contest and instruct everyone to take safe shelter. Once the contest is suspended due to lightning, wait at least 30 minutes after hearing the last thunder before having teams & spectators leave safe shelter and resuming the contest. Complete guidelines regarding lightning safety appear in every NFHS rule book. Remember, lightning kills, play it safe! 5

The batter must replace the helmet immediately. Batting helmets shall have a non-glare, not mirror - like surface and shall meet the NOCSAE standard at the time of manufacture. 6

7 Foul Ball Rule f Foul Ball Rule f A batted ball that rebounds and hits the batter while he is still legally in the batter s box shall be called a foul ball. A batted ball that rebounds and hits the bat while the batter is still holding it while in the batter s box shall be called a foul ball. Foul Ball Rule f Follow-through Interference Rule Even though this batter has one foot completely outside the batter s box, the contact with the ball occurred before the front foot was out of the batter s box on the ground, therefore is ruled a foul ball. On his natural follow-through, the batter has made contact with the catcher. The ball is delayed-dead on follow-through interference and if F2 isn t able to throw out the runner attempting to steal, the runner must be returned to first base and the batter is out. 7

8 Optional Speed-Up Rules Courtesy Runner Optional Speed-Up Rules Courtesy Runner No. 44 is the courtesy runner for the catcher, No. 2. If his team bats around in an inning, No. 2 has not been substituted for and may bat when it is his turn. If the offense bats around and No. 2 reaches base a second time in the inning, he may run for himself and is not required to be replaced by a courtesy runner. RESTRICTED TO THE BENCH/DUGOUT RULE PENALTY For any minor violation of Rule 3-3-1f, 1-5, (g-k), the offending coach will receive a written warning and will be restricted to the bench/dugout for the remainder of the game. 8

Being in live ball territory (excluding team s bullpen area) during the opponent s infield practice prior to the start of the game g. enter the area behind the catcher while the opposing pitcher and catcher are in their positions h. use of any object in his possession in the coach s box other than a stopwatch, rule book (hard copy), scorebook i. be outside the designated dugout (bench) or bullpen area in not a batter, runner, on-deck batter, in the coach s box or one of the nine players on defense j. charge an umpire k. use amplifiers or bullhorns for coaching purposes during the course of the game Ejection RULE Penalty Ejection RULE 3-3-1q After the written warning and the coach is restricted to the bench/dugout, if the coach commits another offense, the umpire shall eject the coach from the game. If the umpire deems the offense to be major, such as, physical contact, spitting, kicking of dirt or any other physical action directed toward an umpire, the umpire shall immediately eject the coach from the game. 9

10 Compression Sleeves RULE Legal Illegal Pitcher s Uniform RULE Uniforms have developed over the years in regards to style, color and manufacturing processes. Compression sleeves are designed to provide comfort and support to the arm(s) of a high school pitcher. They not only provide a useful purpose but are now designed to accentuate a school s uniform with creative and decorative style. A pitcher shall not wear a white or grey exposed undershirt with sleeves that extends below the elbow. 10

11 Catcher s Mask Catcher s Equipment Legal Illegal The catcher helmet and mask combination shall meet the NOCSAE standard. Any helmet or helmet mask combination shall have full ear protection (dual ear flaps). A throat protector, which is either a part of or attached to the catcher s mask, is mandatory. In addition to a head protector and a mask with a throat protector, the catcher shall wear a body protector, protective cup (male only) and baseball protective shin guards. Celebrations Celebrations During a home run celebration, team members must remain clear of the plate, allowing the umpire to observe that all runners have legally touched the plate. A team is permitted to be outside the bench/dugout area and celebrate during a dead-ball, such as after a home run. However, Rule 3-3-1f (1-4) does not permit unsporting behavior and can result in the ejection of players who taunt or behave in an inappropriate manner. 11

12 Postgame Conduct Postgame Conduct Umpires retain jurisdiction and can eject players or coaches until all umpires have left the field. Even though the game is over, this coach is subject to ejection. Since all umpires have left the field, umpires cannot issue a post-game ejection. However, if confronted by a coach, player or fan, umpires are expected to report the conduct to their state association office. What your runner should do if a fielder is in the baseline without the ball: Go around the fielder (at the end of playing action umpire will enforce the obstruction rule). Coaches, teach your players not to block any baseline without the ball or they are subject to being called for obstruction. 12

13 If the runner is coming to the plate and the catcher catches the ball or has the ball and is moving up the line toward third base, and the runner puts his hands out protecting himself from the collision, even though there is solid contact, this does not cause the player to be ejected. Umpires, read the play, if the runner lowers his shoulder, leads with a forearm, or re-coils and you read intent to run over or dump the catcher in hopes he may drop the ball, then you would have reason to eject the player. Arm Care Coaches have an obligation to take care of their pitchers. Arm injuries continue to rise and proper care must be taken. No single win is worth unnecessary risk or injury to a player. During the first NFHS Baseball Overuse Injury Symposium held on June 10, 2015, several items were discussed and some risk factors were identified. A significant percentage of overuse injuries are avoidable with education. A player who throws more than a 100 innings in a calendar year will have a higher risk (3x) of elbow and shoulder injuries. Several states are investigating using and implemented pitch counts as their pitching restriction model. Youth programs are beginning to manage young pitchers better. There will be a similar expectation at the high school level in the near future. 13

14 Some of the risk factors include: Pitching while fatigued Not taking enough time off from baseball every year (at least 4 months, with at least 2-3 months being continuous) Throwing too many pitches and not getting enough rest during the season Pitching on consecutive days Pitching for multiple teams at the same time Throwing breaking pitches at too young of an age CAUTION: DO NOT STOP THIS PRESENTATION OR CLOSE YOUR BROWSER At the conclusion of the verification page, you will be provided with a certificate of completion.
