3 HOUSE RULES The tournament will folllow standard indoor softball rules with the following exceptions and variations: BUNTING Bunting is not permitted TEAM SIZE & RATIO All teams must field with 3 men & 3 women. If you have extra players you may include them in the batting order alternating men/women as much as possible. There is no maximum team size for extra batting, but we recommend batting with 5 & 5. PITCH COUNT All batters will begin their at-bat with a 3-2 count. CEILING Any batted ball which makes contact with the ceiling (or ceiling structure) will be called a dead ball and the batter will be called out. FOUL BALL AREA Any batted ball which lands in fair territory will be a fair ball, regardless of whether it bounces or rolls behind the foul ball line or not. Any batted ball which lands in foul territory will be a foul ball regardless of whether it bounces or rolls into live territory or not. The foul ball line is in line with the front of home plate. HOME RUNS A home run wil be awarded for any batted ball which hits the back wall off the bat below the home run line. If the ball hits the back wall above the home run line, deflects off the side wall or makes contact with a fielder before hitting the back wall, this will be called a live ball and will not be a home run. The back wall includes any fixtures and fittings on it (basketball hoops etc.). The home run line is in line with the bottom of the banner in both halls and will be judged by the umpire (see picture right). BONUS PRIZES! There will be three targets on the back wall in each hall (looking something like the one on the right). If your batted ball hits one of the targets, you win a bonus prize! Each target will have a number on the back which corresponds to a prize located at Tournament Control. Simply take the target with you after the game to claim your prize! Each target can only be hit once and then it s removed from the wall immediately and given to the player. JEWELLERY HOME RUN LINE HOME RUN LINE Visible jewellery is not permitted while playing and should be removed. If jewellery is not easily removable it should be taped over.

4 HOUSE RULES HOME/AWAY The choice of Home or Away teams will be decided by the a coin toss before the start of each game. TIMED GAMES Please remember that all games are timed. We need to stick to the schedule as tightly as possible so please try to keep the change over times between innings and games to a minimum. FINALS The Cup and Plate finals will be three innings long. The rest of the playoff games will be two innings long. RESOLUTION OF TIES Tied points in the groups after the Round Robin will be decided by the following criteria, in this order: Head to head result Total game points scored Total PLUS game points scored Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock UMPIRES & SCORERS We would be very grateful if umpires and scorers could be provided by all attending teams (where possible) on a voluntary basis during off games. Scorers will be provided with scoresheets and timers. All scoresheets must be submitted to Tournament Control after each game. MVPs After each game, team captains must choose one male and one female MVP from the opposing team. The names of the MVPs must be given to the scorer, which should then be filled in on the scoresheet after each game. Please obtain player names from the opposing team captain. CONDUCT This tournament has been organised purely for fun & recreational purposes. The umpires will all be amateurs volunteering their time and will be doing their best. If you disagree with an umpire s decision, please remember that all games are timed and the umpire s decision is final. A short, respectful discussion is fine, but is getting into a heated argument really worth it? Aggressive or abusive behaviour towards the umpires or other players will not be tolerated. Failure to act in a respectful manner may result in ejection from the tournament if necessary. Remember, we re all playing because we enjoy the game. Sometimes umpires make bad calls and sometimes they make good calls. Sometimes you ll agree and sometimes you won t. Shake it off, get on with the game and feel free to tweet about it later. #softball ANYTHING ELSE? 5 TOURNAMENT VENUE The tournament venue is at the following address: University of Sussex Sports Centre Sportscentre Rd Falmer Brighton BN1 9RB The venue is located just off the A27. Plenty of free car parking is available at Car Park 5 on the map. The venue is also accessible by train from Falmer station which is located just across the A27. (Ahem...Southern trains. Good luck with that!) Local bus services also run frequently to the University of Sussex campus. Visit for services and timetable information. Venue Notes There are no catering facilities at this venue. There are a few vending machines, but you should bring some food and drinks with you (unless you can get by on overpriced Lucozade and Twiglets). Food is not allowed to be eaten inside the halls. The playing surface is a gloss laminate wood. Please wear appropriate, non-marking indoor footwear. The venue has changing and shower facilities.
