No. 5 Arizona State hosts No. 14 South Dakota State on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 12 noon, returning to Wells Fargo Arena after last week s Grappling at Gammage event. Live scoring can be found on Trackwrestling while the match will be broadcast on the Pac- 12 Network with Anthony Robles and Jason Knapp on the call. The 2017 Pac-12 champions will also be honored as part of the day s festivities. WHITE OUT Fans are encouraged to wear WHITE to Sunday s match for a White Out match. UP NEXT After this week s dual, the Sun Devils have two tournaments in the month of December, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the beginning of the month and the Midlands Championship at the end of the month. SHIELDS AND VALENCIA EARN WEEKLY HONORS Josh Shields (157) and Zahid Valencia (174), both undefeated on the season, were honored for their performances Nov. 10/12 as Shields was named National College Wrestler of the Week by The Open Mat and Valencia received the same honor from FloWrestling. Within a week, Valencia defeated the previous No. 1 Mark Hall (Nov. 5) at the NWCA All- Star Classic as well as No. 4 Myles Amine (Michigan) and No. 3 Bo Jordan (Ohio State). Shields defeated No. 7 Alec Pantaleo (Michigan) and No. 5 Micah Jordan (Ohio State). VALENCIA MOVES BACK TO NO. 1 After defeating reigning national champion Mark Hall (Penn State), 3-2, at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 5, Zahid Valencia moved back to No. 1 at 174 lbs. in several polls including Intermat, FloWrestling, and TrackWrestling. GRAPPLING AT GAMMAGE In a first of it s kind event, Arizona State took their home opener to a different venue, hosting Pitt on Sunday, Nov. 19 at ASU Gammage Theatre on the ASU Tempe campus. Wrestling has performed on the biggest stages in the world - the Coliseum in Rome, Times Square, the U.S.S. Intrepid on the Hudson River, and even NYC s Grand Central Station. Now we will make our own small part of history when we wrestle Pitt in one of Arizona s iconic buildings. It will be an excellent venue for wrestling and a historical event in ASU history and we re proud to be a part of it. ASU Gammage was designed in partnership with then-president Grady Gammage and famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the mid-1950 s. Though neither lived to see the blueprints take life, the building was completed in Sept and is the only public building in Arizona designed by Wright. The Gammage stage has welcomed a vast number of musical, artistic, and cultural talents over the years including B.B. King, Johnny Cash, and Elton John, a 2004 presidential debate, and numerous Broadway touring plays including The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, the Lion King, and more.

2 Sun Devil Wrestling Head Coach Zeke Jones The seventh coach in ASU wrestling history, Zeke Jones was hired in April 2014 and had his contract renewed in October Jones led his alma mater to its 17th Pac-10/12 championship (19th conference title including two Western Athletic Conference titles) in 2017 behind five individual champions in Josh Maruca (149), Josh Shields (157), Anthony Valencia (165), Zahid Valencia (174), and Tanner Hall (HWT). In his first season with the Sun Devils, Jones led ASU to a second-place finish at the Pac- 12 Championships, the highest finish since 2006, and coached six wrestlers to the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships including All-American Blake Stauffer (184). In 2016, the Sun Devils again finished second as a team at Pac-12 s and returned six individuals to the NCAA championships. An Olympic silver medalist for the United States, Jones was the 1991 World Champion at 52kg, a four-time World Cup Champion, and coached the United States Olympians in the 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2012 Olympic Games. A member of ASU s 1988 NCAA Wrestling Championship team, Jones was a three-time All-American and Pac-10 Champion for the Sun Devils. A national runner-up at 118, Jones sits at No. 4 in ASU s career record book in both overall victories (134) and dual victories (59). He also holds the school record for dual match victories in a season with 22 during the campaign. As Olympic head coach, Jones athletes earned two gold medal and one bronze at the London games in His athletes in the 2004 Athens games, where he was the freestyle coach, earned a gold and two silvers. In the four World Championships during Jones tenure, the USA placed third in 2011, fifth in 2013, and seventh in He also led the USA to five individual World Champion medals, including two-time world champion Jordan Burroughs. The United States also competed in three Freestyle World Cups during the Jones era, placing third in 2012 and 2013, and sixth in During the Jones era, the USA won eight Junior World medals, five University World medals, and four Cadet World medals. Jones came to USA Wrestling after coaching at the University of Pennsylvania from , where he amassed a record of Following the 2006 campaign that saw an NCAA champion, two All-Americans, two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) champions, and a third-place finish at the EIWA Championships, Amateur Wrestling News named Jones the Rookie Head Coach of the Year. Prior to coaching at Penn, he served on the coaching staffs at West Virginia, ASU, and Bloomsburg University. Jones coached teams that have finished in the NCAA Final Four twice, in the top-10 four times, and won six conference team championships. Individually, his wrestlers have won six NCAA titles, eight NCAA finalists, 36 individual conference champions, 29 All-Americans, 74 NCAA Qualifiers, and 11 wrestlers have competed in the NWCA All-Star Meet. Originally from Ann Arbor, Mich., Jones is a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, member of the Arizona State University Hall of Fame, and the Michigan Wrestling Hall of Fame. ASU President Michael Crow on Zeke Jones: I said to Ray [Anderson], either we re going to have a wrestling team that s going to compete for national championships or we re not going to have a wrestling team. So you need to find the best person in the world to be our coach. Zeke Jones is our coach: Multi-time world champion in wrestling, NCAA champion, ASU graduate, and at the time Ray hired him, sitting Olympic coach for the United States Olympic Team in wrestling, former coach at the University of Pennsylvania. That is the person, the personage, the kind of character that we are looking for. 4 Sun Devil Wrestling Weekly Notes SUN DEVIL REPRESENTATION ON WORLD TEAMS Two Sun Devil coaches served on USA Wrestling World Freestyle Teams, with assistant coach Chris Pendleton on the Junior World Team staff and assistant coach Lee Pritts on the Cadet World Team staff. All-American Zahid Valencia also won a silver medal for the US, helping the team to its first title since Valencia significantly improved upon his 10th place finish in 2015 and seventh place finish in Valencia followed in his head coach s footsteps as Zeke Jones earned a Junior World Freestyle silver in 1986 while Sun Devil teammate Mike Davies won silver in It was the seventh consecutive year ASU has had representation on the Junior World Team, with Zahid Valencia from , his brother Anthony Valencia in 2014, and Tanner Hall in Now current Sun Devil Jason Tsirtsis was on the 2013 team while Bubba Jenkins won gold in 2007 prior to his time in Tempe. ANTHONY ROBLES INDUCTED INTO ARIZONA SPORTS HOF Anthony Robles, 2011 NCAA champion and ASU graduate, was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The 3-time All-American and 4-time NCAA qualifier at 125 lbs. also finished his ASU career ranked eighth in wins (122) and 10th in dual wins (53), setting ASU career records for bonus-point victories (92) and technical falls (47). In 2011, Robles capped a perfect 36-0 season and won a national championship by defeating the reigning champion, Iowa s Matt Mc- Donough, 7-1, in the finals. That year, he was named the NCAA Tournament s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Since graduating from ASU, Robles has become a motivational speaker, receiving the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance in 2011, and recently had the opportunity to narrate an ESPN E:60 episode on Wisconsin high school wrestler Zack Anglin, who was born with no hands or feet. Robles also returns to ASU on the Pac-12 Network broadcast team for wrestling matches, also part of ESPN s team for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Robles is the third representative of Sun Devil wrestling to be named to the prestigious Hall of Fame after 1967 NCAA wrestling champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Curley Culp (2002) and 1965 WAC champion, former president of USA Wrestling, and longtime supporter of ASU wrestling Art Martori (2014). Joining Robles in the five-member class of 2017 are Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill, longtime sportswriter and current Cronkite School professor Paola Boivin, former Coyotes captain Shane Doan, and former NBA great and GCU head men s basketball coach Dan Majerle. CHAMPIONSHIP REUNIONS IN On November 26, the 2017 Pac-12 Championship team will be honored while on January 20 vs. Oregon State, members of the 1988 NCAA National Championship team will return to Tempe to be honored as part of the dual for the 30th anniversary of the championship. Tsirtsis (149) transferred from Northwestern where he was the 2014 NCAA Champion as well as a two-time Big Ten champion and 2015 All-American. Millhof moved to Tempe from the University of Oklahoma where he earned All-American honors in and was one of just four true freshmen to compete in OU s starting lineup in ASU adds 12 other freshmen and transfers, highlighted by freshmen Cade Belshay, Kordell Norfleet, Navonte Demison and Brandon Courtney. 7 Sun Devil Wrestling Weekly Notes Tanner Hall (HWT) won Pac-12 individual titles NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships are set for March at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2017, ASU qualified five wrestlers in the form of five Pac-12 champions - Josh Maruca (149), Josh Shields (157), Anthony Valencia (165), Zahid Valencia (174), and Tanner Hall (HWT) while Z. Valencia and Hall became All-Americans. THE STAFF Joining head coach Zeke Jones on the coaching staff are sixth-year assistant coach Lee Pritts, fourth-year assistant coach Chris Pendleton, and second-year volunteer assistant Haislan Garcia. Pritts, considered one of the top recruiters in the country, previously worked at North Carolina State, Old Dominion, and Missouri. He was an All-American at Eastern Michigan and qualified for the 2000 Olympic trials. This summer, he was a coach for USA Wrestling at the Cadet Freestyle World Championships. Pendleton previously served as an assistant coach at Wyoming for four seasons, and specialized in training the team s upper weight classes. Pendleton was a two-time NCAA Champion and three-time All-American at Oklahoma State. In summer 2017, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Wrestling Junior World Freestyle Team in Finland where Zahid Valencia won a silver medal. Garcia, a three-time Canadian Olympian, joined the staff as volunteer assistant coach last season and brings a wealth of experience as a nine-time Canadian National Champion and multiple-time Pan-American championship medalist. Maddie Schossow (Iowa 15) enters her second season as Director of Operations while Alex Reyes and Matt Kramer join the staff as Student Video Coordinators.
