1 ffic Safety Basic Facts 2011 Youngsters (Aged 15-17) In this Basic Fact Sheet, youngsters are defined as those between 15 and 17 years old. This age corresponds to the learning of autonomy, and more particularly of access to different means of transp. It is the age of access to driving motorized vehicles. This fact sheet addresses the fatalities of youngsters in road traffic accidents, in the EU countries. In , more than one thousand years old people died in road traffic accidents, in 19 European countries. In the EU-19, the number of years old fatalities in road traffic accidents fell by 4 between 2000 and 2009, in 19 European countries. 2 The statistics presented relate mainly to the e EU-19 countries for which CARE C data are available and updated fo or the decade 2000 to The evvolution of this total from 2000 to 2009 is presented in Figure 1. In , for year olds, fatalities in rroad traffic occurred in the 22 countries and there were in the 19 countries. The fatality rate for year olds in the EU-19 countries fell by 42% between 2000 and The fattality rate of the whole population and th hat of year olds are sho own in Figure 1 for the period from to 2009.The fatality rate is defined as the ratio of the number of road d traffic injury fatalities per million population. In the EU-19, E overall, the fatality rate of the year olds followed the same downward trend as that of the whole w population. The decline e was slightly more pronounced among g adolescents for the years and Figure 1: Overall and year old fatalities rates (per million population opulation) in the EU-191, * *data from m 2008 for IE and SE In the 22 countries of the European Union where the data are availab ble for 2009, the average fatality rate e was 64 per million populattion for the year olds (Figure 2). On the contrary, Slovakia, Sweden and Czech Republic have th he lowest fatality rates. 2 / 13

In contrast, in countries such as Slovakia, Czech Republic and Latvia, their risk is two times lower than average (Figure 4). Figure 4: Relative rate for fatality for year olds in EU-22 *, 2009 In Ireland or Finland, year olds have twice the average risk of being killed in a road accident. Table 3 compares the male and female distribution of year old fatalities by type of road and area (urban or rural), according to the countries, in In the EU-24, most of the fatal accidents took place on rural roads, for both the year olds (56%) and the whole population (6). In 2009, 37% of the year old female fatalities were killed on urban roads, compared with 45% of males. The propions are reversed for the whole population, however; 43% of the female fatalities were killed on urban roads versus 37% for males. Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Finland and United Kingdom are the main countries where the propions of year old fatalities occurring on urban roads were greater for males than for females. Figure 13 : Overall and year old distribution of fatalities by hour, EU-19*, 2009 The peak period for year olds fatalities is 6-11 pm. *2008 datta used for IE EU-19* = EU-24 minus MT, LU, LV, SI and SK Date of query: December 2011 Discus ssion and conclusion During the period 2000 to 2009, the improvem ment of the road safety level am mong young people followed the same trrend as for the general populattion of the EU-19. However, regarding th he level of road safety among year olds, there are major diffferences between the countrie es where the adolescents are safesst such as Slovakia, Sweden and Czech Republic, and the countrries were their risk is highestt, like Ireland, Finland and Greece. The mo otorized two-wheelers are the main safety issue for men of this age group. g Specifically, the actions of injury prevention for adolesccents should focus on the use of the mop ped at this age. 11 / 13
