22 BREAKING THE CYCLE OF REOFFENDING We think it s important that businesses put back into the community, which is why we ve set up the Halfords Academy, a bike mechanic training facility at HMP Onley and HMP Drake Hall, recently visited by Justice Minister Phillip Lee. The Academy offers offenders the opportunity to train as bike mechanics, creating the prospect of permanent employment. Our employment programme for offenders has trained and offered full-time jobs to 28 candidates over the last two years. Last year, our Academy at Onley won the Department for Work and Pensions See Potential award. RE-CYCLE Every day customers bring their old bikes to 75 of our shops to be recycled. We work with Re-Cycle and since 1997 over 60,000 bikes have been sent to 16 different countries in Africa where working bikes are making a difference to real lives. Halfords also donates reconditioned children s bikes and new helmets to primary school children in disadvantaged areas across the UK. The bikes are reconditioned at our Halfords Academies
