The number of commuting cyclists in U.S. has increased 43 percent between 2000 and San Jose saw bicycling to work increase 200 percent between 2006 and US News and World Report declared cycling to work the number 1 way to improve one s life. The New York Times declared cycling to be the new golf for executives.

30 Bikes Mean Business The entire 2,250-mile East Coast Greenway bike route network could be upgraded for one-fifth the cost of a highway bridge. New Yorkers save $19B per year because they rely less on cars than the residents of other U.S. cities. Homes within a half-mile of Indiana s Monon Trail sell for an average of 11 percent more than identical homes farther away. After Mississippi s Longleaf Trace trail opened, sales in a nearby bike shop doubled and have risen ever since. The business growth generated an additional $175,000 in state sales tax, of which $31,500 was returned to the city.
31 Bikes Mean Business Bicycling projects create an average of 11.4 jobs per million dollars spent, compared to just 7.8 jobs for road-only projects. Three bike paths in Central Florida bring $42 million to the local economy every year. In Iowa, bicycling brings $435 million per year in economic activity, plus $82 million in annual health cost savings. The annual infrastructure investment by the state is approximately $3 million. Two retired sisters purchased an abandoned hardware store in Travelers Rest, S.C., when they learned a bike path would pass through. They opened a gift shop café that catered to the path users. They hoped to employ seven people; they now have 23 employees. For the price of one Interstate interchange, America could fund every bike project currently proposed.
