The Routes The Classic Challenge, Wee Jaunt and the first 25 miles of the Big Belter are on closed roads this year. 5 RULES OF THE ROAD The Rules: All riders must still obey the highway code, including stopping at red lights and riding no more than two abreast. Don t ride on the pavement. Pay special attention to the section in the highway code entitled extra rules for cyclists. gov.uk/en/travelandtransport/highwaycode YOU MUST NOT RACE. There will not be a prize for the first finisher In Particular Obey traffic lights including pedestian crossings. Stay within cones on one-way closures. These cones are for your safety against oncoming traffic. Even on closed roads, always ride on the left allowing faster participants to overtake you on the right. If you get too tired and have to walk keep to the left side of the road so as not to create a safety risk for other participants. Please obey ALL instructions given by the Police and stewards and crossing marshalls. Make sure that you keep a good distance between yourself and the bike in front. If you see or are involved in an accident, or see anything that may compromise the safety of participants, please report it to the nearest steward and also contact Event Control on If it results in an injured rider, direct other riders around the scene. Make sure the injured rider is not left alone, do not try and move the rider and do not give any food, drink or medication. The event organisers reserve the right to disqualify any rider or team that behaves in such a way as to cause danger to other entrants or road users. THE CLASSIC CHALLENGE 45 MILES If your bike breaks down, move off the road before starting to repair it, do help others who have broken down if possible. Be considerate to local people along the route, use provided toilet facilities and do not litter or stray onto their property. It is strongly recommended that you wear a helmet during this event. Don t Forget Bring cash and a bank card to pay for spare bike parts if needed and cash to purchase freshly baked treats at the rest stops and at the finish festival. All your kit dress for any weather, rain, cold, wind, sun layers will help, but definitely don t forget your waterproof as the weather can change quickly. Bring a FULL WATER BOTTLE and some snacks with you to the start. There is water and snacks en route, but best to be prepared from the outset. Please ensure you have brushed up on your cycling etiquette and skills both of which are available on the Pedal for Scotland website: If you and your bike get collected by the support vehicles and subsequently get separated, we will return your bike to the Royal Highland Centre and it will remain there until the site closes at 17:30. After that time you will need to arrange your own collection from the Cycling Scotland office by calling Please DO NOT bring any vehicles out on the course as this will create congestion and will be a danger to participants and other road users. There will be support and sweep vehicles patrolling the route these are controlled from Event Control. The route is a 45 mile traffic free route between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The route includes stops at Drumpellier (for a quick top up on water or a mechanical fix), Slamannan (for the finest cake sale Central Scotland has to offer!) and Linlithgow (for our signature lunch stop). As in previous years, riders will be set off in groups at regular intervals to minimise bunching on the road and to allow the police to manage the traffic effectively out of Glasgow. Please note that the last start wave will be 08:30-09:00. PARTICIPANTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CROSS THE START LINE AFTER 09:00HRS. In case you fall behind this schedule you will be given a choice of either being picked up in our sweep vehicle, or being removed from the event. You will of course be able to continue to follow the route but you will be cycling on the open road outside of the event footprint and responsibility. If you drop out and do not complete the ride you MUST advise us by telephoning Event Control ), giving your name, number and approximate location. There will be first aiders and mechanics at the feed stations should you need them. Mechanics are available to assist with minor mechanical issues, but it is important you arrive with a fully serviced bike with fully functional brakes. Items such as inner tubes and brake pads will be available to buy. Please remember to bring cash in case of emergencies or to buy cakes at feed stations. WEE JAUNT EDINBURGH 10 MILES The Wee Jaunt Edinburgh starts in Linlithgow at 08:30, where riders will be set off in groups at regular intervals to minimise bunching on the road and to allow the police to manage the traffic effectively out of Linlithgow. Please note the start will be from 08:30 09:00. PARTICIPANTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CROSS THE START LINE AFTER 09:00HRS. The ride is fully signed and uses traffic free roads. There will be Police Scotland officers as well as stewards at a number of locations. There are some places where it uses or crosses busier roads. At all times be aware of other road users, take care and remember this is a fun ride and NOT a race. THE BIG BELTER 100 MILES Please note the start will be from 06:45 07:00 and everyone will be set off in groups at regular intervals to minimise any disruptions. Please make sure you fix your timing chip to your bike and you cross both timing mats. Timing mats are located at the start in Glasgow Green and at the finish as you enter the Royal Highland Centre. To get a time, you MUST have a timing chip and cross BOTH mats. For the first 25 miles of the route you will share the closed roads with the Classic Challenge, after this point though the route reverts to open roads and live traffic. You MUST follow the Highway Code across the whole of the route. The event is much tougher than the classic challenge and as such a minimum speed of 20kph (12.4 mph) needs to be maintained. The cut off times at 25 miles and 47 miles are compulsory and all riders reaching these points after the times above will be diverted to shorter routes. If you fall behind this schedule you will be given a choice of either being picked up in our sweep vehicle, or being removed from the event. You will of course be able to continue to follow the route but you will be cycling on the open road outside of the event footprint and responsibility. If you drop out and do not complete the ride you MUST advise us by telephoning Event Control ( ), giving your name, number and approximate location.
