1 Manigotagan River Watershed Community Education and Indigenous Water Leaders Canoe Trip July 2013) Project Summary: The CCF in partnership with the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources CIER), the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society CPAWS MB), Paddle Manitoba PM), and Red River Outfitters RRO) will lead a community watershedhealth project and a seven-day environmental leadership canoe trip for Indigenous youth. Youth from the First Nation communities on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg who are enrolled in grades 9, 10 or 11 will be invited to submit an essay describing why they should be selected to participate in the project as a Water Leader in the effort to protect the Watershed and other watersheds on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. The objectives of the project are to: 1) Provide our 10 Water Leaders with an on-the-water environmental education regarding the ecological status of the Manigotagan River and the Watershed; 2) Provide the youth participants with an opportunity to participate in a wilderness canoe adventure, to be physically active outdoors and to work together as a group in a canoe trip setting; 3) Develop concrete opportunities for our Water Leaders to engage their friends, families and communities in CPAWS MB s East Side Lake Winnipeg conservation campaign and the Indigenous focused environmental and cultural programs of CIER; and 4) Raise media and public awareness of the need to better manage Canada s Boreal Forest and the important ecosystems of the watersheds founds on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. Focus on Outdoor and Environmental Education: The 10 Water Leaders selected for the Manigotagan River canoe trip learning adventure will receive formal instruction in canoeing and camping skills, ecology, biology and geography. Educators from our partnering organizations and visited sites will lead these sessions and will engage the group in discussions regarding human activities that impact on the health of the Watershed e.g., forestry, mining, hydroelectric projects, agricultural and municipal wastewater). Ron Thiessen, Executive Director of CPAWS MB and his staff will work with the CCF to develop environmental curriculum describing the ecology of the Manigotagan Watershed and the organization s campaign to protect the east side of Lake Winnipeg region from ongoing threats from human economic development. On the last day of the trip, CPAWS MB staff will paddle in to meet the group in order to lead a discussion regarding human activities that are impacting the health of the Manigotagan Watershed e.g., mine sites, forestry), their conservation campaigns, and how the Water Leaders can get involved in CPAWS-MB's work after the project. The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources CIER) will provide Indigenous focused environmental and cultural curriculum e.g., traditional knowledge, science, sustainable water practices) that will be presented during the canoe trip by a First Nation's group facilitator. One component of the curriculum will see the youth capture photos, short videos and audio files that they will weave into a digital storybook.
2 Paddle Manitoba PM), the provincial canoe and kayak affiliate of Paddle Canada PC) will help promote the project through their network across the Province. The message we are promoting is that safe and fun canoe trip outings begin with formal instruction. We will encourage the youth participants to become engaged with Paddle Manitoba s certification courses after the project so that they will in time learn the skills to travel their local rivers safely with their friends and families. After the trip, our Water Leaders will return to their communities where they will make presentations to their schools and write articles for local newspapers describing their experiences and their newly acquired environmental knowledge. The CCF will work with CPAWS MB and CIER to engage our Water Leaders in their campaigns and programs after the project e.g., volunteer at events, school presentations). The focus of our program is to develop the next generation of informed and motivated environmental citizens who will educate and inspire their friends and family members to work towards finding solutions to society s environmental challenges. Our Water Leaders spread the message of environmental protection and getting involved throughout their communities, thereby impacting on hundreds of citizens in their watersheds. CCF Background: The CCF is a charitable organization BN RR0001) that sends Canadian youth on canoe-trip learning adventures. Our objective is to provide a hands-on education regarding Canada s natural heritage, the joys of safe outdoor adventure, and the importance of playing an active role in protecting our wilderness areas and waterways. We believe that canoe trips provide a transformative environmental education that cannot be achieved in the classroom. Only by travelling and living on a waterway can one truly recognize and understand the impacts that pollution and development are having on Canada s water resources. The CCF partners with accredited outfitters who provide the expedition logistics transportation, equipment, food, certified guides etc.). This ensures that our canoe trips are led by professionals with extensive experience on the waterways we travel and helps support and promote local ecotourism operations. The Foundation also partners with local environmental organizations in order to promote the protection of the waterways we travel. These partnerships provide our youth participants with an on the water education regarding the issues facing Canada s waterways as well as establishing concrete opportunities for them to play a role in working towards solutions in their communities.

7 Canadian Canoe Foundation Testimonials It's impossible to be passionate about a cause you know nothing about, or to feel caring or concern for something you have never loved. This is why it's important that people, especially people our age, get the opportunity to learn about and enjoy this river as much as possible. The impressions we gain when we are young form the basis for our actions as adults. Liza Chatterjee participant), Athabasca River We ve learned many things on this trip. We learned about nuclear power plants and the effects on the river, about geology and underwater caves. We also learned about the history of the river: logging, commercial fishing, fur trading, pictographs and about the Algonquin. And the most important thing we learned is what we can do to protect our river. Teagan Retty participant), Ottawa River I just wanted to write and say a big thank you to you and your team. My son, Drew participated in the Miramichi trip a couple of weeks ago. He had a really great time and was able to learn the importance of preserving & promoting our beautiful river. He made friends and memories, shared laughs and companionship, learned values and appreciation. Thanks again for your wonderful program. Stacey Astle-Munn parent), Miramichi River We were pleased to hear that your aim is to work with CPAWS Chapters across Canada in the Canoe Canada 2012 project. We believe that the canoe-trip projects planned for each territory and province will not only provide youth with an environmental education but will also raise public awareness at all levels of society regarding the threats facing Canada s wilderness areas. Éric Hébert-Daly, National Executive Director, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. We support the aims and objectives of the Canadian Canoe Foundation which provides Canadian youth with the opportunity to learn canoeing and camping skills while exploring Canada s waterways, share their experiences and new found knowledge with their communities and engage in education and advocacy activities that will promote the protection of Canada s world famous lakes and rivers. Graham Ketcheson, Executive Director, Paddle Canada.
