4 FREJ Elegance Speed Edge The Struer Boats Frej 504 is designed by the internationally renowned kayak designer Björn Thomasson and is the first sea kayak launched by Struer Boats. Frej 504 is a highly maneuverable kayak, optimized for Greenland roll, surf, play in waves and efficient touring in all kinds of weather conditions. 7 534 I must say, what a design! This boat handles beautifully, accelerates super fast, catches waves and surfs like nothing else, and still holds a great cruise speed for group paddles! 8 FREJ The design criteria and development lot of things are passed on routinely without A much thought from kayak to kayak, company to company, generation to generation things that work and are widely accepted as best practice. But sometimes it pays to look at those things from a slightly different angle, to ask questions and start thinking laterally. In Frej there are influences from old Scandinavian touring kayaks, east Greenland hunting kayaks, surfskis and multisport kayaks. Frej is designed to be a kayak that does not interfere with the paddler s intentions, whether with excess weight, unnecessary volume, high deck catching the wind or questionable longitudinal balance. It has a stability curve with a healthy balance between initial and secondary stability. It has speed to keep going against a sudden offshore gust. It is a kayak that is designed for active safety (keeping the paddler out of trouble) as well as passive safety (rescues, re-entry-and-roll and different kinds of rolls). The low gunwale amidships allows a tight catch as well as uninhibited torso movements for advanced maneuvering. The hull configuration is almost symmetrical with a slight hint of Swede-form, a good compromise between reliable performance in waves and touring speed. We have minimized the wetted surface in relation to the displacement (and thereby the friction) to a very low figure, despite the sharp chines. Relative to the mathematical minimum for a 135 kg displacement, the underwater area is at no station position more than 6,6 % over promising a fast and easily driven hull in its class. The considerable rocker places the paddler deeper in the water with a healthy effect on stability. It also lowers the Cp, and to compensate I worked a little more volume out in the stems. With a Cp of 0,52, Frej is the most efficient at touring speeds around 7-8 km/t (most mileage per sandwich). The extra volume also helps keep the stems from diving in steep seas. Frej is designed to be a highly competent partner to paddlers who like big water play, surfing and tough touring in whatever conditions that might be encountered. It turns extremely quickly and easily the rocker, sharp midship chines, and the rather flat bottom combine to give quick and precise maneuverings for surf and play. To balance the maneuverability, the adjustable skeg is vital to bridge the performance range from surf/play to efficient long distance tours. Safety and comfort goes hand in hand. The cockpit configuration is a major contributor in controlling the kayak in open sea conditions. But more importantly, the initial stability is downplayed in favour of an increased secondary stability. While this may seem odd to a beginner, believing that stability is a the-more-the-better quality, s/he will soon discover that 1; the experienced initial tippiness disappears after a few minutes, and 2; without the excessive initial stability normally associated with entry-level boats, the hull will move smoothly, easily and predictably in waves, and be surprisingly dry, while the pronounced secondary stability will keep even the novice from capsizing. We strongly believe that safety is not a kayak with built-in inertia, whether disguised as stability or trackability. While such disobedience may at times save a beginner from the result of his/her mistakes, it also makes it hard to handle real situations where swift action is needed. Instead, the Frej hull is extremely maneuverable with minimal built-in directional stability (the skeg adds the tracking needed) and reacts directly to the paddler s intentions. The paddler can concentrate on wind and waves, knowing that the kayak follows as a perfect dance partner no dull sluggishness to fight. In a responsive kayak, even a beginner will quickly learn what 8

9 works and what does not the basics of becoming a competent paddler. Rolling, support braces, balance brace etc. are cheatingly simple: less initial stability to overcome during rotation, better secondary stability to assist in the final stage and, of course, the low sheer amidships and aft deck facilitating stroke dynamics in paddling, rolling and maneuverings. The balanced stability curve and low deck make it easy to climb back into the cockpit after a wet exit, for non-rollers. Looks are not to be overlooked! From Shaker philosophy: Don t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don t hesitate to make it beautiful. I couldn t agree more! We wanted Frej to be a visual statement as well as a functional and efficient paddling machine a restrained, but bold and exciting elegance that stands out among the competition and is appealing in all viewing angles a kayak to be proud to be seen in, and one that is easily recognized even from afar. 15 504 PRO The kayaks are fantastic. Two beginners had no problems handling them in wind and waves. Easily maneuvered and take a good amount of camping gear, easy to control insurf and on flat water. 17 534 PRO I love this kayak, I used the FREJ 534 for a two week expedition in Arctic Norway this year and was so impressed with its load carrying capacity, its speed and its maneuverability. The graceful, traditional lines perfectly blend with my paddle of choice, which is the Greenland paddle made by Anders Thygesen of Norwegian Wood.
