Editor s Stuff Hey folks, Welcome to The Southern Canoeist coming out from the cold after a few years in hibernation. After recently spending a few wet and windy afternoons (currently not too difficult to find), reading through the large box of old Southern Canoeist magazines, I found myself laughing and smiling and being constantly surprised. There were epic tales of first descents, poetry (yes, poetry!), safety information, cartoons, more epic tales, and a few more epic tales. Through each of these articles, it is apparent the club has a long and extraordinary history, consistently generating national and international talent in many fields of kayaking. And lots of fun seems to be had in between! I look forward to my stint as newsletter editor for the next wee while thanks to John Boro for asking me so nicely to take up the reins! Cheers and beers, Shazza (aka Sharon) PS. And all that poetry along to two.reds@oz .com.au for inclusion in the next mag. 5 Ramblings from the Commodore s Bowels It was a cool winters night, Jen had gone to Melbourne for the day to try and stop our daughter from screaming in the middle of an I do ceremony and I thought why not, I ll pop down to the DSS to have a chat to some paddling mates, after all there s some free food and a tab on at the bar (one to remember at the same time next year!). All was swinging along well until the subject of voting in a new DCC committee was brought up. I m not exactly sure how the rest of the night went but suffice to say that I woke up in the morning and found a box of old Southern Canoeists on the back porch signifying the handing over of the captaincy of our illustrious club from one so capable and learned as the now appropriately named Rear Commodore Cam to a greenhorn such as myself. I assumed that the first thing that one should do upon taking over the reins of such an untamed beast as the DCC would be to research what makes the beast perform to its ultimate capacity. What better way to do that than spend the next 4 hours flicking through the 40cm high pile of memorabilia dating back to the early 80 s that lay in a box on the back porch. I was initially struck by the high-class literal ramblings of past and present members of our club before actually realising that what lay in front of me was in fact almost three decades of paddling history. The Southern Canoeist has documented the ebb and flow of the club and the way it morphs depending on the prevailing weather conditions and the motives of its members. During wet years, boaters squirm out of their heated lounge rooms and harness the power of Tasmania s water ways in what could be considered as plague proportions. Indeed it has been known to try and keep some paddling trips quite in order to keep the numbers down. Given enough of these years strung together, the state has been known to produce some fantastic paddlers and has had its fair share of National Team representatives in various disciplines. When, however, rainfall is lean and the rivers struggle to respond to the light mist that wisps at their catchments, Tasmania s paddling community either hunkers down in front of the fire or they look elsewhere for their respective kicks. Those that are hell bent on getting an adrenalin fix may well struggle to achieve this dodging the weed on the Browns Rivulet and may turn to other more accessible and local sports such as thrashing the trails on a two wheeled bone breaking machine, commonly known as a mountain bike. However, if you get your kicks from endorphins, a drought can be your friend. In the past few years we have seen the DCC transition from a whitewater club to more of a flatwater racing club. People still want to paddle and are turning from short fat boats built for bouncing off boulders to long flimsy racing machines that can be damaged by pushing too hard on the foot pegs. The club presently has a very healthy membership rate and is embracing the change in the weather by providing activities more in line with prevailing conditions. However, if you have recently tried to organise a whitewater trip you would be immediately struck by the lack of willing and able paddlers. Sure there are some Page 5

older paddlers that would be most capable of scraping their knuckles down the Broad, but willing or able, I don t think so. Gone have the days where one would be woken from their inebriated state by the sound of boof hungry Neanderthals in search of caffeine in your pantry. It appears as though these folk have either gone off shore in search of the elusive elixir of life known as whitewater or have simply had babies and are unwilling to risk going paddling for fear of being hospitalised from an angry Red Back spider that has moved in on your once treasured toy. I have indeed pondered the state of whitewater paddling in this state and have come to the conclusion that there are actually plenty of rivers that still flow for a good period of the year, but one has to be willing to travel. In this day and age of carbon trading perhaps it is only just that we, as a paddling community, become responsible users of that precious resource known as oil and settle for a morning jaunt on the Derwent rather than drive for 8 hours in one day for a 1 hour paddle. On the other hand it would be oh so nice to feel the impact of an aerated boof off a sweet 20 footer. Alas if that is to be the case I guess I will have to put some hard yards in to recruit and train some more people to join in on the fun and good times. Whatever is the case, the club will be there and will support those that have a passion for any, or all, of the amazing array of paddle sports available to the Southern Canoeist. Go on, get out of the vegie patch and get amongst it. Captain Booger PS. A big ta goes out to Shazza for producing this copy of SC and allowing me to tangle my toe in the pond of paddling literacy. I'm going to extend that thank you to all past and present executive members of the club for so ably steering the HMS DCC through the rough seas. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Booger really wants to hand on the broken paddle sitting on his back deck, also known as the Anderson Shield. It hasn t been awarded in the past few years, but is typically bestowed upon that paddler or group of paddlers who perform some death defying act in the name of paddling perfection. Past winners include Danimal, Andy W and Mikey Thomas you will clearly be in good company if you win. So if you think you are a contender for the 2008 Anderson Shield, or suspect you know a shy boy or girl who might just fit the bill, let Booger know. Page 6

2008 Wild Water World Champs Roundup Earlier this year, three club members migrated north for the winter, with the aim of splashing with the best at the 2008 Wild Water World Championships and Wild Water World Cup. Dan Hall, Ben Maynard and Stew Bennett, aka Rapid Descent Racing, travelled to Ivrea in Italy, Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic and Lofer in Austria to compete at these prestigious events. During the four weeks of competition, every World Championship and World Cup race yielded personal best results for both Ben and Stew. Although plagued by illness during his World Championship campaign, Dan added to his impressive international record with a 4 th and 11 th place in the World Cup finals. Their best race event was at Lofer, Austria, where Ben, Dan and Stew achieved possibly Australia's best set of overall results from a world wild water competition all placing within the top 12. Ben completed his best year of international racing with a personal best of 12 th place in the World Cup Classic final, as well a personal best 21 st place in the World Cup Rapid Sprint final. Ben finished with an overall World Cup ranking of 12 th. Ben on the World Champs course, Ivrea, Italy In a close finish, Dan finished 4 th in the World Cup Rapid Sprint final, backing this up with an 11 th place in the World Cup Classic final the next day, proving his outstanding ability as an all-round competitor. Stew continued his incredible rise through the international field, placing a remarkable 9 th in the World Cup Classic final. To achieve a top ten finish in his first year of international senior competition is an exceptional achievement and perhaps an exciting glimpse of performances to come. Rapid Decent Racing s performances in this year s World Championships and World Cup place the lads in a strong position to go even better when racing on their home rivers in the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Wild Water World Cup scheduled for October next year. 9 2008 Wild Water Australian Champs Update The weekend of September 20 th -21 st saw a hairy bunch of DCC members head to the King River in Victoria, to compete in the 2008 Wild Water Australian Championships. Dan Hall, Carol Hurst, Matt Dalzeil, Dave Gray and Sarah Boyle collectively cleaned up the event, bringing home 14 medals between them. Northern Tas paddlers Andrea McQuitty and Alayne Bonney also performed brilliantly, making the event a Tassie dominated affair. Dan cemented his place as the fastest white water kayaker in Australia by taking out both the Australian Championships K1 men s Classic and Sprint events. This makes it an impressive five times a row for Dan. Adding to his tally, he also took out gold in the Team s Sprint event, thereby taking home gold in all events in which he competed. Carol also took home her fifth Australian Championship gold medal with the fastest women's time in the Classic event, while Andrea McQuitty added yet another Australian title to her collection, taking out the Rapid sprints event. After several years away from serious competition, Matt Dalziel impressed even himself by taking out second place in the Sprint, and third place in Classic event. He topped this off with further gold in both the Classic Teams and the inaugural Sprint Teams events. Matt becomes the Australian Masters Champion in both Classic and Sprint. Alayne Bonney took out third place overall in both sprint and classic events, then added a gold in the Women's team event. Alayne becomes the 2008 Australian Open Women's Champion and the 2006 School's Champion. Meanwhile, Dave Gray, having spent countless hours in helping to organise the event, managed to find time to race his way to third in both the Sprint and Classic events in Veterans Class. In her first national event, Sarah Boyle took out second place in the Classic event in Veterans Class. Congrats to all competitors! These results highlight the extraordinary depth of talent in the club at present, and auger extremely well for the upcoming Australian Championships in January 2009 and World Cup in October DCC Quick News Freycinet Challenge Entry Voucher, worth $100, sell for $50, call Dan Looking for the Broad River key? 10 2009 Wild Water World Cup Update In early May this year, Tasmania's bid to host the 2009 Wild Water World Cup was officially ratified by the International Canoeing Federation. This is in line with the ICF's policy to hold Wild Water World Cup outside Europe every four to five years. To date, there have only been two such events in 1999 (New Zealand) and 2003 (USA). This is a great result for the sport of wild water racing in Australia! Furthermore, it's recognition of Tasmania as a world class venue for wild water courses. There will be three classic (long) and three sprint (short) races held during the competition in At the moment, four venues are planned to host the racing, scheduled for October and November. These include the Mersey River, Meander River, Bradys Lake and Cataract Gorge. All four venues are dam controlled by Hydro Tasmania, who will make the event possible through water releases. The timing of October-November should maximise water resources, coming after the Tasmanian winter and early spring rains. World Cup '09 will have flow-on benefits throughout the Australian and Tasmanian wild water community additional publicity, participation, development, access to equipment, exposure to international athletes, heightened chances of Australian paddlers doing well on their home courses...it's a great opportunity! More broadly, the event will attract more than 200 foreign visitors to the State so they too can discover Tasmania. For more information and regular updates, visit Huon Race Series The very successful Huon Race series was held over winter, with a total of 5 races on the Huon River around Franklin and Huonville. A total of 63 paddlers enjoyed the various events, with a stand out series winner being Matt Dalziel, winning 3 of the five races. Just want to pass on my thanks to all those who organised the Huon Races over the winter period. The races were well run, race results published promptly on the club web site and were enjoyed by all who took part. These sorts of events don't just happen and I would like to thank Phil, Mary-Jane, the kids and all the others from the club who worked hard behind the scenes to allow this series to happen. Regards, Ben Fasnacht For full race results, see the club website. Winter Challenge Roundup & Results The weather gods finally smiled on race organisers for this year s Winter Challenge, bringing blue skies, balmy temperatures and around 400 keen as mustard competitors. Special mentions to Justin and Jen, for their second place in the mixed teams/baby shuffle category, Swarz for unearthing his runners the day before, and Danimal for being delayed in London and missing the race altogether. Cazza held up the side with a win in the Open women s team category. A big thanks to Kris & Imojen for awesome organisation for the day. For all results, check the website at Page 10

Canoe Polo Results This year the club ran two canoe polo rosters. The first was an open roster with six teams competing. Congratulations go to Our Team for winning the competition by goal difference from Kayak 4 play. A ten-week schools roster was run following the open roster. This competition had six teams from three schools and incorporated pool slalom at the end of the roster. The purchase of a shipping container to keep the gear in has proved to make the organisation of the roster much easier than in the past. Thanks to the club members who came to help coach at the schools roster. The shallow end of the pool proved to be popular for rolling practice all winter. 12 Shortly after some good rains August 2007 Trip Report Tasmania had received some extensive rain over the weekend with major flooding in all the large catchments, including the Forth, South Esk, Derwent and Huon. The choice of rivers to paddle was only limited to which roads weren t covered in water and how far you were willing to drive. It was Friday night. I wandered around to Booga s to talk him out of a weekend of renovations and into a paddling trip. His response was that he wouldn t get out of bed these days to go paddling unless it was some sort of record flow. So I called the Hydro. Cam: Hi, I was wondering what the flow is on the Nive and the Derwent at the moment? Hydro Man: Who s speaking and why do you want to know? Cam: Cam here, I want to go canoeing. Hydro Man: The Nive is at an all time record, I don t think you will be paddling that river. Wayatinah is running at 600 cumecs and Butlers is running at 50 cumecs with nothing going over the dam or being released. Cam: Nive at record level, really. Maybe we ll go on Sunday. At this point Booga realised the gravity of the situation and put aside his plans for renovations for a few days. It was Sunday morning. Booga, Bristle, Ben, Tom Greg, Marcus, Jack and I met on the Tungatinah Bridge. The mood wasn t filled with excitement; we arrived to find the river still busting its banks even though it looked like it had dropped about a metre. After talk of alternative trips we made the call and headed for the put in. Once on the river I really started to shit myself. There was a lot of water, I couldn t feel my fingers and I remembered the big water qualities of the CFS...none. We floated at a frantic pace while the waves got bigger and the eddies more scarce. We careered around one corner into a huge rapid with apparently a very large broken wave at the bottom. I missed the wave as I was employing the human keel approach at the time. The trip continued on in this vain until it climaxed with a huge rapid around a corner of which the end couldn t be seen. What we could see were two bus-sized holes and a fine line down the left. Jack and I portaged while the rest ran it, with different levels of style. The portage was rough but it did allow me to regain some feeling in my fingers. After this, the river continued along in the same fashion. I was amazed to find I could still navigate down some big water and miss some huge holes, even without paddling any decent white water since Tibet in We all started to relax towards the end of the trip, knowing the bigger stuff was behind us. At the get out we clambered up the bank and got changed with huge grins, feeling on top of the world, the cold fingers and total fear pushed well to the back of our minds. Cam Page 12

A Man Called Trout September 17, 2008 was a sombre day for myself and many others in the paddling community. It had been a year since our good friend Warren Lee lost a hard fought battle with cancer. It seems fitting that with the resurrection of the Southern Canoeist we should dedicate a page or two to remember a well respected Derwent Canoe Club member and reminisce about some of the good times we had, and the man called Trout. Warren was known to most people in paddling circles simply as Trout, a name which stuck after a trip down the ditch and a meal of sardines. I have many fond memories of the time I got to spend with Trout, both on and off the river. My first memories of Trout were way back in his days as a junior in the Tasmanian Canoe Polo Team. A tall skinny lad (weren t we all back then), Trout was instrumental in the team winning a national championship and making me look good as the coach. He was also an exceptionally talented slalom and whitewater paddler but took a break from competitive paddling when he left home to study engineering in Hobart. Toward the end of his studies I managed to get Trout a summer job at Brighton Council, where he proceeded to make such an impression he was offered a full time position and eventually went on to become the Engineering Manager, and my boss. His work ethics never ceased to amaze me. I don t believe he ever had a day of sick leave until he got cancer, and then he continued to come into the office. He was always a hands on person. I remember going to Bradys one weekend to go boating, however Trout had a different agenda. He organized to meet his dad, Pete, there and together they proceeded to undertake some major bush mechanics on Trout s Datsun. Later on he decided he wanted a boat to go fishing and exploring and had his heart set on an aluminium cruising catamaran, but he wouldn t just go out and buy one, with Trout half the fun and challenge would come from building it himself and this became his project during his illness. There was never a dull moment with Trout, particularly after a few beers (or various coloured drinks), and I can recall many a time when the quiet, mild mannered Warren, transformed into the somewhat louder and slightly more irreverent Trout. Most of those stories are best left unprinted and relived over a few quiet ales though. Trout can possibly be credited for pioneering one of Tasmania s classic whitewater runs, the Broad. Trout loved an adventure and the Broad provided plenty of that over the years. I recall an attempt to get down the full Broad one winters day. Daylight savings hadn t kicked in yet, there was snow at the top of the put in, it Page 13

was a 6 hour trip, and we got on the water at 1pm.but Trout thought we should still have a crack at it. In my wisdom I took a playboat, which in hindsight was a blessing as it was a lot lighter to carry out after I realised I was in over my head and the trip would be finished in the dark. Trout and the others continued on, completing the entire lower section in the dark, as I drove up and down the road wondering if they had walked out. The adventure didn t finish there though, as Trout was good enough to go back with me the following weekend to find my boat, which I didn t quite manage to carry all the way back to the car the weekend before. Oh, and to widen the 4WD track to the put in whilst sitting on the bonnet of the car with a dirty great big chain saw. One of my most profound memories of Trout is of paddling at the 2007 Cataract Gorge Race. Trout was just finishing a cycle of chemo and needed to go into hospital to get various tubes unplugged, but it was the day before the race and they were releasing water for a practice run. So he organized to get unhooked at Launceston Hospital, then drove straight to the put in at Trevallyn Dam and proceeded to lead me, and others, down the river he grew up paddling. I can only imagine the discomfort he must have been in, but he wasn t about to let a little thing like cancer get in the way of paddling the Gorge. The next day we competed in the sport class race, which entailed a mass start below the island and finished on the far side of 1 st basin. Being the natural competitor he was he wasn t going to take it easy and I recall rolling up from a small mishap in a hole to see Trout in the lead. Sunday was the main event as competitors raced head to head. I m not sure exactly where Trout finished in the placings, but I recall seeing him make his way back to the start line numerous times as he progressed through the heats. This was typical of the courage and dignity with which Trout fought his battle with the disease which ultimately took his life all too soon. Shortly after the Cataract Race I was lucky enough to be part of one of Trout s last adventures, a trip down the Franklin. Once again he juggled his treatment and tried to forget his illness for a few days of adventure with family and friends. Trout, Juanita, Pete, Justin, Jen and I set off down the ditch where the legend that is Trout originated some years before for one last hoorah. I feel very privileged to have been a part of that adventure. Leigh Justin, Jen, Juanita, Trout, Leigh at the put in on the Collingwood Page 14

Paddle About Tas Project After 24 years, the Paddle about Tas guide to Tasmanian rivers is being updated and published online. The original guide, published in 1984 and now out of print, was the bible of Tasmanian canoeing for many years and is still a handy resource for those who have one. Things have changed a lot since 1984! Gone are the good (apparently) ol days of the mighty Olympus, a popular early model or was it just the only model of the original fibreglass river boats. Then came the Dancer which marked the beginning of the plastic age, and opened up paddling to those who couldn t avoid all those rocks. You can still spot the occasional Dancer entombed in a layer of dirt in the suburban back yard. Then came the 22 nd century, and creek boats, play boats, drysuits, cartwheels etc. All of which have led to the exploration a lot of new rivers. The new guide is being put together by Kris Clauson and Imojen Pearce of Endorfun, and is due for completion before the end of November. It will be based upon the updated information from the old Paddle about Tas, with the addition of many new rivers. Thanks to the work of Dave Gray and others, a lot of this work has already been done. Input is still being sought from the paddling community on the information you d like to see included on the website, as well as information on any rivers you might have paddled recently, especially those less frequented. Some rivers we need info on are: The Denison The Andrew The Crossing-Davey The Whyte The Arve- has there ever been more than one trip? Deep Creek If you have any ideas for the new guide, or information on rivers, Kris and Imojen at: PAT@endorfun.com.au With thanks, Kris & Imojen Page 15
