Vice-President's Annual Report by John Maddox Rain this year, and lots of it. This was good for the white water paddlers, and those who did not buy a season s pass at Penrith WWS would be feeling very pleased with themselves. Many river trips were run, some multiple trips on the same day, therefore catering for the experienced, intermediates and beginners. Intermediate trips were led by George, Dave, Steve, Mark, Greg and Glenn on the Goobaragandra, Murrumbidgee, Upper Nepean, Georges, Moppy, Pigna Barney, Brogers, Kangaroo, Shoalhaven and Wingeecarribee. At least two beginner trips were run on the Barrington, one on the Murrumbidgee and one on the Shoalhaven. We saw the B group at the Winter Safari run Murray Gates led by George and Steve, the level 0.92 at the Biggera gauge is worth noting as being a reasonably friendly level. The flat water paddlers did not welcome the rain quite so much since flat water paddling is generally about Peace, serenity, relaxation and socialising unlike white water paddling which about Utter fear followed by euphoric relief There was plenty of flat water activity for the first halve of the year but constant rain in the second half did reduce the incentive. We also saw the emergence of the bare foot paddlers who have strengthened the flat water contingent We had for the first time this year an open water category. Andrew and David led the way here with various trips plus one overnighter on Broughton Island. This category is an exciting one because it will fill the gap when the rivers aren t running and introduce new skills to our paddlers. Although this year the River Canoe Club calendar was not chock-a-block full of proposed events, we did many more trips than in previous years and I think we can be very pleased and proud of the year s activities., Page 3

News and Gossip Water Tank Juile O'Connor is asking whether we want to install a water tank at the clubhouse?. We got to hurry though. Community grant applications close next wed. Council Grant? Has the canoe club considered applying for a community grant to install a rainwater tank? This may be a great option for you under the sustainability grant. The applications close next Wednesday 30 May so you will need to hurry! Boat Insurance PaddleNSW is pleased to have secured a Boat Insurance Scheme to replace the previous arrangement. Go to the Insurance page on the website for details. Page 4

Useful Policies for new members by Lynn Parker The following is a list of useful Club policies, strategies and resources for new members when joining the Club. You will also find these documents on the River Canoe Club website for easy retrieval. 1. The Safety Competencies outline the minimum basic skills and equipment for each level of trip in the Club. If you are new to paddling, then you must be taken through the competencies as outlined for flatwater before taking flatwater trips. These basics may take no more than a couple of hours by a Club Instructor or experienced Club paddler, but are essential to ensure that you safely enjoy your first experience in the Club. The Introduction to the Flatwater Guide is an excellent resource for all paddlers when getting started. It goes through all sorts of things like the kind of boats, how to fit them out, your personal equipment all the way to a lesson on Navigation. The AC Safety Guidelines also spell out the guidelines for the conduct of organized trips, run by Clubs and Commercial groups. 2. Club trips can be as small as a trip up Wolli Creek, or as large as a five-day moving trip down the Shoalhaven. It has a start and finish and is organized by a club representative. Club members can post impromptu trips to the yahoo group. They will identify the Grade of the trip, a description and their skill to lead this trip. Skill level can vary according to the complexity of the trip. Members can organize their own trips, and are required to observe all of the safe paddling recommendations. In doing so the AC Insurance will kick in should an incident occur. A summary brochure outlining the insurance policy can be found on the PaddleNSW or AC website. Boat insurance can also be purchased via PaddleNSW. 3. From time to time the Club will run invitational trips, where they will invite members from other PaddleNSW membership. In return, RCC members are invited to participate in similar paddles organized through PaddleNSW. It s a great way to meet new people and visit other popular spots. RCC members are also invited to participate in PaddleNSW Paddle sports, like Canoe Polo run at the Auburn Aquatic Centre, numerous races like Marathon, sprint and open water. These are advertised on the PaddleNSW website, 4. The Club Calendar would advertise most RCC and PaddleNSW recreational trips, Club meetings and training opportunities. 5. Club boats are available for a come and try paddling experience and are free of charge. Members are most welcome to introduce friends to the sport this way. And family and friends are most welcome to join all events socially. Come and Try Paddling is a taster and not a trip and usually lasts only a couple of hours and is covered under PaddleNSW. Names and contact details are to be kept and forwarded to the Club Secretary. Club boats are available for loan on Club trips, and fees are listed in Splash. The full policy for loaning boats is available on the website. 6. Single event members who are competent paddlers are welcome on all trips however a single event registration must be completed and a payment of $10 either online or to the trip leader before commencing the trip. There is no limit to the number of single trips taken however a new form and payment is to be used for each new trip. This rule is a condition of the Clubs affiliation with the State Body, PaddleNSW. Registration at This enables people who wish to paddle in a single event to register and pay online. 8. Member s boats can be stored at the Clubhouse. The policy can be found on the website under forms and documents. In summary, it will cost $100 per year and you will be provided a Clubhouse key for access at your convenience. Page 5

9. The Club strives to deliver quality training and trip leading and supports the accreditation of members who are prepared to step up to take these leadership rolls. Qualified members who assist the club in this way can have their Australian Canoeing Registration reimbursed by the Club. Details of this policy can also be found on the website. A full list of qualified members can be found on the website under contacts. 10. Checklists can be found for preparing yourself as a participant and a trip leader. The trip leader is required to have completed a Float Plan that includes an emergency management plan for each trip that they lead. PaddleNSW conducts Courses for Guiding, Flat & White water Instructors, Sea kayaking and Rescue. 11. Trip reports are welcome and should be provided to the Magazine Editor by the 20 th of each month. 12. Finally, the Club provides each new member two books and a DVD on the history of the Club. Please ensure that you pick these up at the CLUB MEETING held on most first Friday evenings of each month at the Clubhouse situated at Richardson Crescent Marrickville opposite Tempe Railway Station and right next to the Concordia Club. All the best for a great membership and let a Committee member know how you are going in the Club. Constructive feedback is always welcome. Lynn Parker Page 6

THE TOTALLY NARLY RCC BEGINNERS WEEKEND THE STEPS CAMPSITE, BARRINGTON RIVER MAY 2012 By James Stuart One of our instructors said that recreational white-water paddling is a team sport. Members of our team started rolling in on Friday night. The convergence at the campfire was a chance to get to know some of them. Some more than others, however, as a few remained up into the wee hours of the morning trying to solve some of the world s problems. Some of them may have been people from Gaelic speaking, whiskey drinking nations.. No damage was done however and after good hearty breakfast on Saturday morning, we were allotted kayaks, buoyancy vests, helmets of the correct colour co-ordination and then headed down to the nearest flat water for capsize rescues and exits. This involved immersing one s self upside down in water, which was quite refreshing. I found it so refreshing that throughout the weekend I couldn t stop immersing myself in the water again, again and again. The writer holding the golden paddle We were all split into three groups and our instructor Tim showed us some techniques such as paddling (That helps a lot), going forwards and backwards and basically doing the hokey-pokey in a kayak. The Hand of God rescue was also demonstrated, which looks like something that happens in a Hollywood action movie because you basically upright a dead weight. Very effective for rescuing unconscious paddlers or those who have found the river so boring that they feel asleep. Happy paddlers out learning new skills Page 10

Afterward, we ventured onto the famous Steps of Girraba, which to a complete beginner probably appears that your about to fly off Niagara Falls in a Surf boat. From memory, NSW canoeing guide describes as a delightful series of rapids. Everyone made it down in one piece and full of brimming self-confidence, we got transported up to Bindera Farm. After lunch and returned back down the river to put what we learned into practice, and more stuff like edging (yes, like a snowboard!), ferry gliding, which isn t a parachute on the back of harbour transport but a technique of drifting across a river current and breaking in and out of eddies.. All these paddlers popped out of the Bindera express bus, including luckily experienced ones Saturday night there seemed to many more people turning up around the campfire in a case of build a bonfire, and they will come Like the night before names were forgotten two minutes after introduction. Hey you, I already know your life story but still don t know your name. There were tales of previous kayaking adventures and maybe a few more of the world s problems were solved. On Sunday we awoke and tried to remember what a cloud looked like. After wishing our two token mothers Lynne and Eileen a happy mother s day because as Basil said You only have one mother, but anyone could be your father, We were bussed up to Bindera again. Today Emma was our group s guide. Being naval personnel, she effectively guided us and our boats into battle with the rapids. The tempo was ramped up from the previous day, with a few challenges laid down. Trying to Enjoying the company of other paddlers on avoid hitting rocks was large on the agenda. Today we learnt a long word ANTICIPATE. Saturday night One thing I learned this weekend is that the river is a bit like a living thing and likes to take your boat where it wants you to go. It s a bit like let your car roll down a hill without steering or looking ahead and hope for the best. Many commuters seem to do this in the rush hour in Sydney however Page 11

New club member Phil tackles a wave We negotiated the Steps for a third time, can we get enough of this rapid? This time it was The Steps of Girraba, the hard way, which involved a unexpected sharp right hand turn without a warning sign. Now this weekend wetted many of our appetite for more adventure. No doubt we ll get wet in the process. Many thanks go out to those who took time out of their lives to show us how it s done. A sign that could come in handy on some rapids Farewell to our idyllic riverside camp until next time Page 12

Moonlit Paddles Winter Moonlit paddles on Wolli Creek As the full moon rises over the Creek, Flat water paddlers are taking to Cooks river. With warm clothes and lights on the Kayaks for easy spotting, the ghostly mangroves take on a lost air as we almost drift with the incoming tide up Wolli Creek. Afterwards, we warm up with mulled wine and a few nibbles. Next full moon is 4th June. Nell will post in the Yahoo group. Page 13

Trip Report (Barrington Weekend May 2012) by Eileen Callaghan River Height: Rocky Crossing metres. Deemed by the Instructors as an acceptable level to teach many flat and white water skills. Twenty three Participants: Seven qualified instructors. We arrived quite late on the Friday, but had no problems putting up our tents in the dark, and were soon, enjoying a few drinks around a welcome campfire, getting to know our other early birds, Admittedly, John, James and I were able to enjoy the campfire rather longer than our other campers, having a SPIRITED discussion, on the joys of rivers of river running. We woke up early Saturday morning and were joined my our other club members, and were soon on the water, practising, as it would turn out, some valuable rescue and stroke techniques before heading to a rather rocky steps. Then with the help of Basil, and John ( another newbie) to whom, Basil quickly gave some sage advice on the intricacies of kayak car shuttling, John managing to fit 16 eager paddlers in his handy Minibus. We were blessed with great weather, if rather dismal low water, however, thanks to our wonderful patient team leaders, we managed to have a great time, learning our basic's and discovering that river running is rather different, than white water, With a very friendly strainer emphasising how easy and quickly a simple paddle can go wrong. Unfortunate for the unlucky swimmers, but a very apt lesson. Kevin, really put our group through our paces, on paddling techniques, and I for one discovered, that I have still got a lot to learn. Later we chilled out around Basil's welcoming camp fire, getting to know our fellow, club members, whilst enjoying a few relaxing drinks. The group then entertained each other with tales ( Some rather TALL) of river trips past. After a full day on the water, we managed to get to our beds somewhat earlier than our previous night On Sunday morning we awoke to a crisp clear frosty, Mothers day morning; Lynn and I being the spoiled mothers, Although I seem to have missed out on my breakfast in bed. But who could beat a Mothers day on the River!! We then made our way up to Bindarra, for some club photos and to watch our fellow paddlers set off on another trip, which is where John, Ciaran, and I had to reluctantly say goodbye and head back to Sydney, for work commitments would like to say a big Thank You to all of you for taking the time out to encourage and welcome us newer members. Page 14

Roll up, roll up! The Whales are beckoning! The whales are beckoning you to come on 2 ocean trips, weather dependent. All boats will need to be proper sea kayaks, with skirts, bailers, tow ropes. You will need to be dressed for possible immersion. There may be some surf landing. Helmets will be required. David has had some issues with dates ;) So please check with him for final confirmation July 7-8 The first will be a weekend trip of fun and training based around Cronulla. The number and experience of participants will determine what is planned ;-) This may be 2 single days or an overnight camping. Some experience will be expected as a 2 hour ocean paddle is likely. July BROUGHTON ISLE overnight camping. Limited numbers will depend on those attending. This will involve a 3 hour open ocean paddle, to and from Port Stevens. Hardy souls may wish to join me in a circumnavigation to clean up plastic from the beaches. This trip historically has a 50% cancellation rate due to unsuitable weather conditions. As a contingency, we may plan an alternate trip if that suits participants. Planning will involve a non returnable $10 camping fee to NPWS. I will pay in advance to secure our spots. Please detail your experience, boat details, planned gear carried etc when replying to this so that I can determine whether you are suitable for these trips. There are 2 sea kayaks available at the club house for hire, and I can also provide one, again with a donation to the club coffers. David Page Page 15

COOKS RIVER UPDATE...Bringing back Magic to the children.. A LETTER FROM COOK'S RIVER Volunteers At the end of our Cash-for-Containers event in April, several very excited youngsters got a taste of the Cooks River future we are all working for. They sailed on the River on a handmade pirate ship (a raft made largely of reused plastic bottles), on a beautiful afternoon, with family and friends there to help, guide and cheer them on. It was a magical moment that should be every child s birthright. But it isn t today because the Cooks River is frequently far too polluted with E. coli (faecal bacteria) and chemicals to be safe for human contact, including swimming and boating. Sewage Pollution Monitoring by the CRVA has consistently confirmed poor water quality, with high faecal bacteria levels indicating sewage contamination. Last year, UNSW researchers also found trace levels of pharmaceuticals and other organics, which could only occur through sewage contamination. For the last four years, the CRVA has been contacting various agencies (local councils, Sydney Water Corporation) and political representatives (including the NSW Minister for Health) in an effort to get action to reduce raw sewage entering the Cooks River system. This has led to meetings with stakeholders, a Beachwatch assessment, some official reports and correspondence and local media coverage of the issue. But nothing has changed on the ground. Now, we need your help to get the NSW Government to actually do something to limit sewage flows into the Cooks River. For starters, we need 10,000 signatures on the CRVA s sewage petition so that the sewage issue can be raised for official consideration in the NSW Parliament. We ve already got about 1,000. Please help us get the remaining 9,000. If each of you collected just 30, maybe 40, signatures, we d be there! To give this some momentum, let s all try to reach this target by 30th June So send in what you ve got by then, and we ll let you know if we need any more. All you need to do is: 1. Open and print 3 copies of the attached sewage petition to the NSW Parliament requesting the Government act to limit sewage flows into the Cooks River. Actively collect signatures from friends, family, neighbours, workmates, schoolmates, etc, through the end of June Then post the petitions back to the CRVA at PO Box H150 HURLSTONE PARK NSW 2193 (address is printed on petition form). If you can do more to help, please contact Gayle Adams, CRVA Water Quality Co-ordinator, ASAP about collecting signatures: Page 16

at festivals and events (we got more than 300 at the cash-for-containers event alone!) along the Cooks River path (Richard G collected over 200 one Sunday on the path outside his place) at local shopping centres, businesses, schools, libraries, places of worship, etc. at Mudcrab, Friends of Ewen Park, Friends of the Greenway, WCPS, Landcare, etc, events and working bees. Through working together, our successful community action last month got the issue of beverage container pollution and waste onto national TV news, along with the first-ever public statement of support for CDS by a federal environment minister! Now let s work together to tackle the invisible poollution that makes our River unsafe to touch and, more importantly, damages the River s ecological health as well. Thanks in advance for your efforts! Judy & Gayle I've included the Petition in the Splash for any of you who want to pass it around. Also the sewerage report. Page 17

Petition To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales. The Petition of the people of the Cooks River Valley and nearby localities brings to the attention of the House: the value the people place on the Cooks River and its surroundings as an environmental, social and recreational resource to be cherished and protected, and the poor quality of water in the Cooks River in particular the raw sewage responsible for high concentrations of E.coli and other indicators of human pathogens which are harmful to the River and prevent a range of recreational opportunities including swimming and boating. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to immediately limit the sewage flows into the Cooks River such that levels of E.coli and other indicators of human pathogens are reduced below what is safe for swimming and boating activities. Name Address Signature Please return to Cooks River Valley Association, PO Box H150 Hurlstone Park NSW 2193
