1 SWIM CLUB MAKO SWIM CLUB 2009 INFORMATION & MEMBERSHIP (January 2009) GENERAL The Mako Swim Club is the swimming club of the Nadi Sports Club. It is a non-profit organisation managed by a committee of volunteers. Together they organise training sessions and the collection of fees. They also fund raise and host competitions, organise overseas tours, award schemes, training camps and much more. The primary objective of the club is to develop and promote swimming and its teaching in a friendly and social environment. The Mako swimming season starts each year on 1 st February, when the annual membership fees are due. Annual membership fees must be paid by all members, including scholarship members. Swimmers joining part way through the year pay a percentage of the yearly fee. This membership fee includes the affiliation fee to Fiji Swimming. All swimmers applying for membership must complete an application form. Resignation from the club must be made in writing to the club secretary. The following resolution was passed by Fiji Swimming at the AGM in December 2004: Swimmers may register with the club of their choice. Any swimmer wishing to transfer from one club to another during the year (01 January 31 December) must obtain approval from Fiji Swimming prior to the move and re-registration. The swimmer must also pay a transfer fee of $20.00 to Fiji Swimming and provide financial clearance from the club the swimmer is leaving. The above also applies to swimmers who move location i.e. Nadi to Suva or swimmers who may be required to move to another club due to the level of coaching/training that is not available at their current club. It should be noted that at its AGM in April 2006 the Amateur Swimming Association of Fiji (ASAF) changed its name to Fiji Swimming & will be referred to as such in the rest of this document. PARENTS CODE OF CONDUCT Welcome to the Mako Swim Club and the sport of swimming. Being a member of our club and participating in the sport of swimming has many benefits. Your child will develop skills and values such as sportsmanship, confidence, self-respect and self-discipline. Swimming also provides health benefits that last long after active participation ends. The camaraderie among swimmers is unique with many lifelong friends being made. This guide for Swimming Parents will help you and your child be productive and enjoy the environment of our club. Please keep in mind when reading this guide that we all tend to forget our children are just that children, and that they learn from our actions as adults. Make sure that swimming is a positive experience for your child. Don t impose your ambitions upon your child Remember that you have lived your life as a child and don t try to relive it through your child. Swimming is your child s activity. Improvements and progress occur at different rates for each child. Don t judge your child s progress on the performance of other athletes or your own ability as a child. Don t be frustrated that your child s athletic ability is less than others. 1

2 Be supportive no matter what There is one question to ask your child did you have fun? If competition at carnivals is no longer fun your child should not be forced to participate let them enjoy the fun and social aspects of the monthly Friday Club Night. Winning at all costs Focus on your child s effort and performance to reach their personal goal rather than on winning or losing. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing. As an Olympian said My goal was to set a World Record. Well, I did that, but someone else did it too, just a little faster than I did. I achieved my goal and I lost. This does not make me a failure, in fact, I was proud of that swim. Respect other parents and swimmers Always show respect to other parents and swimmers. Don t think that your child s importance is based upon swimming ability. At our club all children are equal and important regardless of their swimming ability. Respect your child s coach The bond between your child and his / her coach contributes to your child s success as well as fun. Don t criticise your child s coach in front of your child or other children. Respect volunteers and officials Please do not criticise those persons who are doing the best they can if you do not have the time or desire to volunteer to help or be an official. Like all sports, without volunteers you would not have a sport. Behave appropriately Your behaviour and personal conduct must be of a standard that reflects highly upon the sport and importantly our club. Set a good example to your children. Friendly rivalry towards other swimming clubs Our club has a proud history and has good relations with other swimming clubs, especially other Fiji Swimming clubs. We expect parents to be good sports towards rival clubs. MEMBERSHIP FEES Be a member of the Nadi Sports Club or pay a fee to the Nadi Sports Club of $55 per year per Primary school student or $82.50 per year for Secondary School students and single adult renewal fee is $ For Nadi Sports club family membership renewal it is $ Family Membership fee (Mako) $20.00 Individual Membership (Mako) $10.00 Annual Membership fee for scholarship students (Mako) $10.00 Fiji Swimming membership fee (Mako) $5.00 per swimmer/year COACHING FEES Learn To Swim $25.00 per month Development, Junior & Senior Squad 1 st & 2 nd child $25.00 per month 3 rd or more children $20.00 per month Scholarship Members $0.00 FEES Membership fees are due by the 27th February. Members will be invoiced for the next quarter & payment must be made within three weeks of the date of the invoice. For large families with 3 or more children swimming, only the 2 eldest children pay full coaching fees, further siblings pay $20 each per month (this is not applicable to the learn to swim group). Scholarship grants are available to dedicated members who have difficulty affording the coaching fees. Details on how to apply are available from a committee member or coach. 2

3 The number of places available in each swimming class is limited. Priority will be given to those who are first in the waiting list and book and pay in advance. Failure to pay any training fees in advance may result in a member s place being offered to another child. Children will not be allowed to continue training beyond the first week of any month if coaching fees remain unpaid. All Mako members have to be Nadi Sports Club members. For membership fees please contact the Nadi Sports Club on or call into the Nadi Sports Club office to collect a membership form. TRAINING The Mako Swim Club trains under the guidance of Mako coaches. Permission must be sought from the Club to attend meets and train with coaches not designated by the club. Members of the Club are encouraged to participate in a variety of competitions throughout the year both locally and overseas, at which members will be supported by a Makos team manager/coach. All members of the club are eligible for selection for the following Fiji National training squads: 12 & under IM Squad National Target Squad National Elite Squad National Distance/Open Water Squad These squads participate in a year long programme of camps, tours and training/testing in order to track their progress and develop the depth of our swimming talent leading up to 2011 South Pacific Games and 2012 Olympic Games. There will be a continual assessment by Fiji Swimming of swimmers who may make the above squads and may be invited to join the National Squad. More permanent changes are at the discretion of the Committee. Other than taking a break over Christmas & New Year, classes continue to run on public holidays and over school holidays. The only weather which may cause lessons to be cancelled is thunder & lightning; rain & wind should not prevent training. To keep swimmers interested, on occasion s new activities complimentary to swimming will be offered. Details of these activities will be advised in newsletters, flyers or by . Swimmers are expected to be punctual for all training sessions and adhere to the Mako Swimmers Code of Conduct. Equipment (boards, fins and pull buoys) should be sorted out before the warm up starts. Junior, Intermediate and Senior squad members who are training everyday are expected to provide their own training equipment. All squad members should bring a water bottle to every training session. The club offers a variety of clothing for sale and encourages all members to wear club kit when attending meets. Swimming caps are compulsory for all members. Club equipment, including 3

4 fins, paddles and kick boards are only available for use by members training under the supervision of Mako coaches. Swimmers should only enter the water when instructed to do so by their coach and should ask permission to leave the water. Swimmers in the beginner groups, regardless of age, should always have a parent/guardian in attendance whilst at the pool. Mako personnel will not supervise swimmers outside lessons. In order to ensure that our swimmers receive the utmost attention from their coach it is best to keep the club membership at a manageable size, to be determined by the Coaches and Committee. The waitlist is on a first come first serve basis provided everyone on the waitlist is an able swimmer & able to pay all money due. Committee and Coaches must be consulted before placing any new swimmer into the Mako training programme Fiji Swimming Calendar To be advised after Fiji Swimming meeting on 17 th January Club Nights Club nights are held once a month funds permitting. They are normally in the middle of the month on a Friday night after training. Parents are encouraged to attend to support their children and enhance the social aspect of the club. The procedure for disciplining members by suspension, disqualification or expulsion shall be at the discretion of the coaches and committee: 1) To charge the defaulting member in writing with the offence. 4

5 2) To cite the member to appear at a meeting of the Committee. 3) To give fourteen (14) days notice of the meeting. 4) To decide the action to be taken. 5) To keep proper minutes of the meeting, details of the action taken and to hold in safe custody documents associated with the matter. 6) To advise the member charged as to the action decided by the Committee and that the member has the right of appeal to Fiji Swimming. 7) To advise Fiji Swimming of the action taken in disciplining a member involved in suspension, disqualification or expulsion. 5
