2017/2018 Triathlon Program Scholarship Nomination Form The South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) implements high performance programs for talent identified athletes from South-Western Sydney across a number of sports. The Academy implements a Triathlon program in association with Triathlon NSW. The focus of the program is on high standards of individual performance and excellence based on a solid platform of skill development. The program is a link in the Triathlon Australia junior triathlete development pathway, linking club athletes to State and National programs. SWSAS is now accepting nominations from male and female athletes for its 2017/2018 Triathlon program.
Eligibility: Athletes must be between 12 and 16 years of age, born and attending high school in 2018 (a slightly younger athlete may be considered as a development athlete subject to places being available). Athletes must reside or attend school or compete for a sporting club within the defined local government areas of: Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly (SWSAS may consider external athletes under some circumstances). Athletes must be committed to progressing to higher representation within the sport of triathlon e.g. NSW Development Squad. Athletes must be committed to attending all coaching/training, education sessions and camps. However we understand that from time to time athletes may be unable to attend sessions due to illness, holiday commitments or competing higher level sporting events for example. Prior arrangement must be sort and approved from SWSAS to be absent from any sessions. Athletes must be a member of Triathlon Australia/Triathlon NSW (or agree to join upon selection). Athletes must be a financial member of a triathlon club (or agree to join upon selection). (Note: Junior triathletes and also non-triathletes who have achieved a significant level in one or more of the triathlon disciplines (swim, bike, run) are encouraged to nominate. Non-triathletes need to demonstrate a sound level of ability in the other disciplines). NOMINATIONS Must be submitted on the official Nomination Form attached to this information document or obtained from the Academy s office or downloaded from the Academy s website no later than Wednesday 6 th September Athletes must provide all relevant information requested any incomplete nominations may result in the nomination not being considered. ATHLETE LEVY An affiliation levy of $ (GST inclusive) will be applicable to all successful new athletes. Returning athletes who do not require new uniform or tri-suit, the levy is reduced to $ (GST inclusive). It is expected that all program athletes have a full uniform kit. Items may be purchased individually/separately if necessary. A SWSAS uniform including a hoodie (or spray jacket), polo shirt, training shorts, training shirt, trisuit, swim cap and hat will be provided as part of the overall program except for those that have existing uniform items. (Returning athletes requiring a new tri-suit and uniform have the option to pay $ and receive these items) All athlete levies must be paid in full within (14) days of selection, or the scholarship offer will be automatically withdrawn (unless agreed Board of Management arrangements have been confirmed).
PROGRAM The 2017/2018 program will run from September 2017 through to April Skills training sessions are generally held throughout the Academy region, although we may go outside the local region for open water swimming for example. - There will be a total of eight (8) - three (3) hour skills training sessions that will include swim, bike and run sessions plus other skills activities. These 3 hour skills training sessions will be held approximately every 3 to 4 weeks, generally on Sundays (likely AM, sometimes PM). - There will be additional 4 x 90 minute triathlon swim skills sessions. These may include open water swim sessions. These additional 4 swim sessions will also likely be held on weekends, most likely Saturday or Sunday PM. - There will be two (2) subsidised skills training camps. o Canberra November 2017 o Narrabeen Academy of Sport 4-6 January A draft coaching/ training calendar will be available as soon as we know the Triathlon NSW calendar for the NSW squad. Circumstances may arise that dictate that some activities/dates may change during the course of the season. SWSAS will also run education/personal development sessions throughout the season. It is expected that athletes will do their own training over and above the SWSAS sessions eg swim squads or run groups. SWSAS coaches will be available to provide training program guidance in this regard. Please note the the Triathlon Program will include activities whereby additional costs will be incurred by the athlete/athlete family e.g. the 3 day triathlon camp at Narrabeen Academy of Sport in January (currently planned 4-6 Jan 2018) will be subsidised by SWSAS but there will be an additional cost to the athlete (approximately $150). For this camp athletes stay on site at the Narrabeen facility but parents will be responsible for taking the athletes to and from the facility at start and finish of the camp. At an additional cost, there is also a subsidised training/racing weekend at Canberra (25-26 Nov 2017) (note for this athletes and families organise their own accommodation and transport). Race entry fees are approximately $50-$80 per event. SELECTION PROCESS Once nominations close (Wednesday 6 th September 2017) all nominees may be required to attend nominated assessment session/s (see dates, times, venues below) and participate in timed swim and run sessions. Following the assessment session/s, and after consideration of all information provided by applicants, both successful and unsuccessful nominees will be advised of the Academy s selections. 10 (ten) scholarships are available. This may include up to two (2) development athletes at the Academy s discretion. Development athletes are those younger athletes new to SWSAS triathlon with approximate qualifying times and criteria.
Successful athletes (parents/guardians) will be provided with full scholarship agreement documents and will be required to attend an induction meeting. Date TBC. Selection will be confirmed upon acceptance and signing of the scholarship agreement documentation by the athlete and the athlete s parents/guardians. As a guide, selection standards will be in line with previous TA Performance Standards. The Academy considers that athletes need to be performing as indicated below. Younger or development athletes need to be assessed as capable of achieving these standards within the program season. Swim- Male 400m (6:00-6:30) Swim- Female 400m (6:00-7:00) Run- Male 1500m (5:00-6:00) 3000m (11:00-13:00) Run- Female 1500m (5:00-6:15) 3000m (11:30-13:30) Assessment Sessions for all nominees (unless advised otherwise) m Swim Time Trial Mt Annan Swimming Centre 3:00pm to 4:00pm Sunday 10 th September m Run Time Trial Campbelltown Athletics Track 6.20pm-7.30pm Tuesday 12 th September 2017 (Alternative arrangements may be made only in extreme circumstances. Run times from a recent 3000m race may be accepted in lieu provided that event was within the previous 4 months and is documented in a formal set of race results e.g. Athletics NSW, Little Athletics, Campbelltown Joggers or similar. Similar applies to swim times). ACADEMY DECISION FINAL The Academy reserves the right to accept, or reject any athlete nomination based on its selection criteria. Applications may be considered from athletes that do not meet the criteria, however this will be at the sole discretion of the Academy. Athletes submitting a nomination for inclusion in the Academy Triathlon Scholarship program are required to acknowledge that the acceptance for their nomination will be at the sole discretion of the Academy. COACHES Guy Creber will be the program head coach. Guy is a Triathlon Australia Triathlon Performance Coach and an experienced triathlete. Guy has relevant coaching experience and qualifications including Bronze Swim Coach Certificate, Level 1 Cycling Coach Certificate and Cycling Road and Track skills certificate, and is a Level IV IAAF Senior Athletics Coach (middle and long distance
running). Guy owns and operates GC Multisport sports coaching and consultancy which is a sponsor of the SWSAS Triathlon program. Guy has been head coach of the Academy program for the last three years. David Hine will be the Program Assistant Coach. David is a Triathlon Australia Development Coach and an experienced triathlete. We value David s commitment, skill and contribution. SWSAS is committed to triathlon coach development. This season we will be seeking another coach progressing toward triathlon development coach qualifications to join our program to assist in coaching. Additionally,SWSAS graduate triathletes will be offered the opportunity to assist and observe coaching at sessions. SWSAS will be encouraging and assisting these athletes to do the Triathlon Australia Community Level Triathlon Coaching Course. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION Scholarships are not in the form of a monetary sum, but rather enable athletes to participate in the Academy program. In selecting the athletes that will hold scholarships within the 2017/2018 SWSAS Triathlon Program, SWSAS is seeking to lay the foundations for the development and emergence of quality athletes that will progress to the highest level of participation in the sport. With the program content featuring skills and technical development opportunities, athlete education, sports science and fitness elements, the program is a comprehensive introduction to what will be required at the elite levels of the sport. SWSAS triathletes will be encouraged to do triathlon and individual sports discipline events and races which will be selected/recommended to best suit the current development level of athletes, and may include events (or training) with other NSW Regional Academies of Sport. One of our aims is assisting athletes to progress toward obtaining draft legal (bike) racing status and to have all athletes ultimately race (be it this season or next) in draft legal races, with National Junior Series races a target. ATTENDANCE As a minimum, unless otherwise approved by SWSAS, athletes will be required to attend - A minimum of seven (7) of the eight (8) skills/training sessions; - The 2 coaching/training camps as outlined; - SWSAS Personal development and Education sessions.
