ASPIRE TO ROW FOR QUEENSLAND? WANT TO TAKE YOUR ROWING TO THE NEXT LEVEL? KEEN TO TRAIN WITH LIKE MINDED ATHLETES? DREAM OF ONE DAY GOING TO THE OLYMPICS? Queensland School Pathway Squad 2019

The Pathway VIII Program is a Rowing Australia initiative for the leading student athletes in each state to compete against each other and possibly be selected as the Junior National crew to compete at the World Junior Rowing Championships. The aim of the Pathway VIII Program is to expose school rowers and coaches to the next level of rowing. It is a chance to experience the national rowing selection process, compete against their counterparts from around the country, to work with high-level coaches & support staff and encourage school rowers to make the next step in their rowing pathway. Athletes will also be given the chance to meet and work with members of the Australian Rowing Team including athletes, physiotherapists, team doctors and coaches, both past and present. In Queensland we are the leading the charge. In 2018 we fielded four eights. Our Girl s Pathway VIIIs were 1st & 3rd. Our Boy s Pathway VIIIs were 2nd & 3rd. In 2019 Queensland Rowing will look to select four boats - Two Schoolboys Pathway VIIIs & two Schoolgirls Pathway VIIIs. In addition to this additional athletes will be invited via a Development Boat to take part in the Queensland Pathway Camp to be held in Brisbane in the Easter School Holidays. Keen to learn more?

Aims of the QLD School Pathway Squad: Provide a great DEVELOPMENT opportunity for school students in Year 11 & 12 A chance for school students to REPRESENT Queensland as many other sports have and that rowing currently doesn t have. Rowing Queensland focuses 99% on the JOURNEY and 1% on the outcomes with selected athletes. Because of this, the program has a journey focus as we understand the challenges of Year 12 and are keen to work with athletes long term post high school rowing. Queensland has always aimed to fill all available spots offered by Rowing Australia e.g. 2 boys VIII s and 2 girls VIII s. RQ sees the EXPERIENCE as an extremely positive one, hence it wants to offer it to as many rowers as we can % of Pathway VIII athletes CONTINUE rowing at a club once leaving school. The program also encourages athletes to look outside of their respective school based programs and show that post school there is a fun, competitive environment in clubs based all throughout the State. Rowing Queensland has always aimed to have excellent RELATIONSHIPS with schools throughout QLD. The School Pathway VIII program has help RQ strengthen these relationships providing a platform on which RQ partners with schools to deliver great outcomes for athletes and coaches. The Queensland Pathway system aims to be a major contributor to the underage National Team, by supporting and developing athletes onto National underage teams to compete at» U23 World Championships,» U21 Trans-Tasman regatta,» Junior World Championships and» World University Games. The Culture & Values of Queensland School Pathway Squad Culture is created by everyone and can only be positive if all participants understand and adhere to the values set down at the start. The overriding part of culture is that TEAM QUEENSLAND comes first! Our athletes comes from different parts of the State and numerous Schools. Rowing Queensland is totally committed to developing this and to making sure we live it through everything we do. The following values are non-negotiable. Collectively, they will define each athlete and subsequently, the QLD SQUAD. SQUAD FIRST everyone must work towards getting the best outcomes for the team (crew and hence, whole team). RESPECT we respect each other no matter what differences we may have. Respect the boats, the coaches, the athletes, the equipment, the infrastructure, the individuals. This must be exhibited at all times.

RESPONSIBILITY We must take responsibility for all our actions and words. We have a no-excuse culture. We do whatever it takes to make the team a success. We question this constantly Have I taken responsibility here? If so, then own the answer and make the change(s) necessary. LEADERSHIP Everyone must be a leader. This leadership could manifest itself in many ways supporting, mentoring and encouraging younger members of the squad; leading by example in training; leading off-water team-building activities that support the culture. BECOME GOOD HUMAN BEINGS We aim to develop the athlete but we also aim to develop the person to be better in every way. Someone who will be admired for on-water success but also for off-water interactions and interpersonal skills. We will guide individuals towards a positive pathway in life and especially after rowing. ENSURING THE IMPORTANT THINGS ARE ALWAYS PRIORITISED Everything matters. Our values are underpinned by getting our structures and processes right. Nutrition, always training effectively, always working on technique, strength or fitness, or whatever is a weakness in your armour. This also involves getting all the little things right as well punctuality, care of equipment, correct uniform and building relationships for the greater good. Be proud of the zootie! AIMING TO HAVE A CULTURE AND SET OF VALUES THAT ATTRACTS PEOPLE We want athletes, coaches, support staff and passionate people to be desperate to join our campaign. They will also have to accept our decision if it is established that they do not fit our culture. It will be hard to fit, but this is contractual and it may not suit everyone. Our standards must be set at a high level from day one and every day we will remind ourselves that the standards we walk by, are the standards we accept. These values are non-negotiable. Mistakes will be made and guidance will be offered in the first instance, but we will not compromise on our mission.

Uniforms Athletes will be provided with a Zoot Suit, Travel Polo, Training Shirt, Hoodie, Vest, Cap/Visor and bag. These items will bear the Rowing QLD logo, Tour name and date Athletes heading to the Australian Selection Trials will also be encouraged to bring at least 2 pairs of jeans, comfortable exercise wear as well as appropriate winter wear on the trip. Cost The cost of the Pathway tour is $1200 This cost is all inclusive for all aspects of the tour, except for sports related nutrition and spending money. Development Boat We acknowledge that across Queensland there are a few athletes who were unable to attend trials in December. Additionally, there are regional athletes who will attend trials whom we are keen to work with for their longer-term development within the sport. Ultimately, we are looking to strengthen and grow rowing in Queensland. To accommodate these up and coming athletes, in 2018 we piloted the inclusion of a boys and girls Development eight within the Pathway training camp over Easter. Please note, the athletes invited to participate in these Development eights at the training camp will not be included in the QLD Pathway Squad in As per the selection policy, additional athletes will not be included in the first two boys and girls Pathway Eights, as we see this as unfair on the athletes that have undertaken the necessary selection process. To express an interest in the Development Boat please flag this to Andrew Service.
